Probabilistic Framework to Quantify the Resilience of Urban Gas Distribution Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Baratian, Amin (Author) ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study proposes a probabilistic framework to quantify the seismic resilience of urban natural gas distribution networks. Infrastructure resilience is defined as the ability to maintain performance after a hazard or, in case of a loss of performance, return to the minimum desired level in the optimal time. The framework presented in this research is comprised of multiple interconnected probabilistic models. These models work in harmony to characterize the impact of the earthquake on various infrastructures such as the buildings and urban gas distribution network components, as well as the probable consequences of the earthquake. The post-earthquake recovery of the gas distribution network...

    , Article International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction ; Volume 81 , 2022 ; 22124209 (ISSN) Baratian, A ; Kashani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Natural Gas Distribution Networks (NGDNs) are complex infrastructure systems that play an essential role in ensuring the welfare and prosperity of many communities by serving their residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation sectors. Earthquakes can damage the critical components of NGDNs and disrupt their services. The disruption of NGDN services can lead to significant economic and social losses. These losses can be mitigated by adopting appropriate resilience enhancement measures. This study puts forward a probabilistic framework to quantify the seismic resilience of NGDNs. This framework comprises multiple interconnected probabilistic models that work in harmony to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Baratian Ghorghi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Kermanshah, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Congestion problems and its vast negative effects on transportation networks is a matter of concern. Considering network extension costs, traffic demand management is an inexpensive method. Giving traffic condition information via radio (called Radiopayam in Iran) to road users, with guidance aimed to drivers to less crowded paths, is a common method in this area. Analyzing radio traffic information system as a part of advanced in-vehicle systems is the objective of this paper. Besides according to wide studies done in recent decades on travel behaviour, we guess that “gender” is a significant factor in travelling. This study employing a sample of drivers (279 men and 41 women) in Tehran,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amini Esfidvajani, Amin Mohammad (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The airport terminal is difficult to plan and design due to the different components and the intricate complexity of its parts. At the airport terminal, we face a queue system which simulation is always a good way to analyze. In addition, computer simulation using modern softwares with the capability to model different types of systems, including the airport terminal, while being less realistic than analytical models, is less costly than operational Exercise. In this study, a supportive approach for better and specific management of Iranian airport terminal buildings with discrete-event simulation is proposed, considering the need for managing the airport terminals building in the country and...

Investigation and Analysis of the Effect of Graphene on the Extraordinary Transmission of Light using Circuit Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motavassel, Ahmad (Author) ; Khavasi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Subwavelength metallic slit structures allow extraordinary transmission of light (EOT) at certein frequencies. In recent years, the effect of graphene layer on EOT has been investigated, which is used in the design of terahertz modulators. The electrostatic tuning ability of graphene electrical conductivity controls the resonance frequency and the amount of incident radiation absorption. Because of the single atomic thickness of graphene, the wide range control of incident light can not be achieved alone. However, by placing this layer with various 1-D and 2-D patterns on periodic metallic layers with EOT ability, high light modulations can be obtained. In particular, the structure of the...

Modeling and Control of Line Waves on Metasurfaces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Hadi (Author) ; Khavasi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis examines a new electromagnetic mode called line mode. This mode occurs when the boundaries have complementary surface impedances. It is possible to control the mode confinement by changing the surface impedance values. Impedance surfaces with non-complementary impedances guides the quasi-line mode, which is a mode between the line mode and the edge mode. Essential features of the line wave are its singularity over the line, its broad bandwidth, and its robustness to certain defects. Another significant characteristic of a line wave is that unlike surface waves in which it is not possible to change the spin orientation, in a line wave, the spin orientation can be altered by...

Optimization of Sparse Control Structures in Multivariable Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Babazadeh, Maryam (Author) ; Nobakhti, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, the optimal control structure selection and design of sparse multi-variable control systems is addressed. A fundamental challenge which frequently emerges in engineering, social, and economic sciences, is the optimal selection of a subset of elements, in order to maximally fulfil a design objective. In practice, it is required to solve this underlying selection problem in conjunction with a non-linear or non-convex optimization which is designed to ensure desired performance. The requirement to solve these two problems simultaneously is what makes it inherently difficult; one which has thus far eluded efforts to develop a systematic means of determining its solution. In spite...

A Neural Network Based Model for Cost Estimation of Industrial Building at the Project's Definition phase

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafiee, Alireza (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Annually there are many small-scale industry projects implemented in Iran, most of which are financed by local financial institutes. The financing agreements between project owners and financial institutes are usually formed and finalized during the initiation phase and are based on feasibility studies done at the early stages; before project design and construction begin. However, in many cases actual costs of projects exceed the costs estimated in feasibility studies which have been approved by financial institutes. Limited financial resources in the country, from one side, and the lengthy process of increasing the project financing limit, from another side, cause delays in the project...

Application of Pseudospectra in Synthesis of Robust and Fault-Tolerant Control Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zargaran, Hamid (Author) ; Nobakhti, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Eigenvalue analysis is a fundamental tool in control issues, however, in some abnormal matrixes it can lead to an incorrect judgment of the matrix dynamic behavior. Pesudospectra, as an eigenvalue generalization, can provide more extensive information of the system dynamic behavior, whereas, the obtained data from eigenvalue analysis can be incomplete. In applying robust controllers, the concept of uncertainty has been attracted researcher interest in system modelling, nevertheless, the controller implementation may not be fault free or the parameters may vary over time. In this project the aforementioned issue will be studied and additionally, the pseudospectra will be employed to design a...

Wind Farm Power Optimization Using Cooperative Game Control Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Deljouyi, Nasim (Author) ; Nobakhti, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research studies the application of coopeartive control and game theoretic approaches in the field of wind farm optimization. The conventional (greedy) wind farm control strategy seeks to individually maximize the power of each turbine. However, due to the presence of aerodynamic interactions (wake effect) between turbines, this strategy will not lead to maximum overall farm power. Accordingly, this study formulates the wind farm power optimization problem as an identical interest game which is utilized to deal with cooperative control problems in general, and the wind farm control problem in particular. Two distributed model-free learning algorithms are then applied to obtain the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moghaddam, Nader (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As population increases in the city, infrastructures have to be developed. Because of the limited financial supplies of the governments and infrastructures and high expenses of which, government is not capable of affording infrastructures to develop cities. Therefore, the government needs to encourage the private section to invest in such project for developing cities. One of the most required infrastructures for cities are parkings. parking spaces are inseparable elements of the Cities; their shortages bring many direct and indirect impacts on the quality of life of the Citizens, including waste citizen’s time in seeking for barely found parking spots, car traffic increase, and surge of...

Low-order Dynamic Output Feedback Controller Design via Convex Optimization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khakpoor, Hossein (Author) ; Nobakhti, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the prominence of low-order controllers in industry, this thesis intends to improve the common design algorithms in this field. In this regard, the main challenge is that this problem is NP-hard due to the non-convex rank constraint which appears in the formulation. The existing algorithms mostly solve this problem by obtaining a convex sub-space for this constraint and using output feedback convex optimization methods. Two of common algorithms are non-iterative. These methods two main steps; first to obtain the full-order Lyapunov matrices related to the controller, and then, to fix the null-space of the matrices which have rank constraint. One of the advantages of the algorithm...

    Sustainability Assessment of Embankment Construction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iravani, Pooya (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Damming projects always have been important while construction, operation and even demolition due to their major effects on society, environment and economy. Although researchers have focused on one or a few phases of construction projects to develop sustainable infrastructures, the research community has to consider long term effects of developments too. There are a variety of such effects that ignoring them will cause construction of not convenient infrastructures i.e. air pollution and over-consumption of energy resources while construction, operation and demolition. Therefore, it is suggested to consider life cycle assessments to include all bad effects in all phases of a project. Dams...
