Joint Functional Split and Resource Allocation Optimization in Elastic Optical Fronthaul

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samimi Vajd, Faezeh (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Hadi, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dynamic reconfigurability in optical and mobile networks can facilitate heterogeneous service provisioning while utilizing minimal resources. This allows cost-efficient service delivery resulting in increased revenues for network operators. Deployment of elastic mobile and optical networks is a key driver for enabling reconfigurability in modern networks. Elastic optical networks can be utilized as the fronthaul portion of new generation of mobile networks. Such elastic optical fronthaul networks facilitate joint reconfiguration of flexible radio and optical elements and provide considerable performance improvements. This thesis focuses on the joint dynamic selection of functional splits and...

Joint Optimization of Computation Offloading and Resource Allocation in Mobile Edge Computing Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shokouhi, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Hadi, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising technology that aims to resolve cloud computing’s issues by deploying computation resources at the edge of mobile network and in the proximity of users. The advantages of MEC include reduced latency, energy consumption, and load on access and mobile core networks, to name but a few. Despite all the aforementioned advantages, the mobility of mobile network users causes the traditional MEC architecture to suffer from several issues, such as decreased efficiency and frequent service interruption. One of the methods to manage users’ mobility is virtual machine (VM) migration, where the VM containing the user’s task is migrated to somewhere closer to...

Graph Signal Processing-Based Resource Allocation in Fiber-Optic Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarei Ardestani, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Hadi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the advancement of technology, the volume of network traffic has also increased dramatically. The optical network, as the main part of the backbone communication system, plays a significant role in the transmission of network traffic. Due to the limited network resources, an efficient resource allocation in optical networks is required to increase network performance and reduce costs. To solve resource allocation optimization problems, an effective tool is needed to provide a suitable solution in a reasonable time. Resource allocation problems are usually developed on a graph, which is derived from network topology or other properties of the network. As a result, graph-based tools seem to...

Optical Communication Impairments Mitigation Using Interpretable Machine Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karami, Mahyar (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Hadi, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Optical impairments, as a challenging obstacle in optical communication systems, have been under deep attention of optical engineers in recent years. These impairments can be divided into two categories of linear and nonlinear impairments. Dispersion is a significant linear impairment leads to broadening of the optical signal and interference between transmitted symbols during detection. Nonlinear impairments such as cross-phase modulation (XPM) and self-phase modulation (SPM) also distort the transmitted signal through the fiber, causing interference at the receiver and degrading the system's performance. An appropriate solution for compensating optical fiber impairments is to utilize...
