    Abstract
Shear wall panels, including cold-formed steel frames and its attached sheathing, are common lateral load resisting systems of cold-formed steel structures. In this paper, the finite element method is used to study the lateral performance of shear wall panels. The finite element model is validated against experimental results of other researchers. Using the validated model, a parametric study is described to determine strength, drift and seismic behavior of the shear wall panels. Based on the results, it is concluded that the initial stiffness and ultimate lateral strength are dramatically affected by the thickness of the frame members, type of sheathing material, edge screw spacing, height...

On the complexity of the circular chromatic number

    Abstract
Circular chromatic number, χc is a natural generalization of chromatic number. It is known that it is NP-hard to determine whether or not an arbitrary graph G satisfies χ(G)= χc(G). In this paper we prove that this problem is NP-hard even if the chromatic number of the graph is known. This answers a question of Xuding Zhu. Also we prove that for all positive integers k ≥ 2 and n ≥ 3, for a given graph G with χ(G)= n, it is NP-complete to verify if χc(G)≤ n -1/k. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Evaluation of substation reliability indices and outage cost based on fuzzy arithmetic

    , Article 2006 IEEE GCC Conference, GCC 2006, Manama, 20 March 2006 through 22 March 2006 ; 2006 ; 9780780395909 (ISBN) Hatami, A. R ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Substations and switching stations are critical segments in an electric power system. Their impacts on system operation and the consequential effects of their components failure are usually more dominant in overall power system reliability. There is always a degree of uncertainty in the practical input data used in reliability analysis. This paper presents a conceptual possibilistic approach using fuzzy set theory to manage the uncertainties in the reliability input data such as failure rate, repair time and operation of protective devices. Suitable fuzzy numbers are proposed for components reliability data. Load of feeders are also represented by fuzzy numbers and their impact on ENS...

    Abstract
In this study the investigation of large deflections subject in compliant mechanisms is presented using homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The main purpose is to propose a convenient method of solution for the large deflection problem in compliant mechanisms in order to overcome the difficulty and complexity of conventional methods, as well as for the purpose of mathematical modeling and optimization. For simplicity, a cantilever beam of linear elastic material under horizontal, vertical and bending moment end point load is considered. The results show that the applied method is very accurate and capable for cantilever beams and can be used for a large category of practical problems for the...

Modeling of hot tearing formation during solidification

    , Article Journal of Materials Processing Technology ; Volume 205, Issue 1-3 , 26 August , 2008 , Pages 506-513 ; 09240136 (ISSN) Hatami, N ; Babaei, R ; Dadashzadeh, M ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A new criterion for the appearance of hot tears in metallic alloys is proposed. This model introduces a critical solid fraction (fcr) to simulate feeding. A hot-cracking sensitivity (HCS) index according to the temperature and solidification time is defined and then is compared with other hot tearing criteria. This new criterion indicates the higher cracking sensitivity for higher casting velocity and higher sensitivity in billet center in the casting and finally the calculated values are in fairly good agreement with the experimental results. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Zero-sum flows in regular graphs

    , Article Graphs and Combinatorics ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 603-615 ; 09110119 (ISSN) Akbari, S ; Daemi, A ; Hatami, O ; Javanmard, A ; Mehrabian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
For an undirected graph G, a zero-sum flow is an assignment of non-zero real numbers to the edges, such that the sum of the values of all edges incident with each vertex is zero. It has been conjectured that if a graph G has a zero-sum flow, then it has a zero-sum 6-flow. We prove this conjecture and Bouchet's Conjecture for bidirected graphs are equivalent. Among other results it is shown that if G is an r-regular graph (r ≥ 3), then G has a zero-sum 7-flow. Furthermore, if r is divisible by 3, then G has a zero-sum 5-flow. We also show a graph of order n with a zero-sum flow has a zero-sum (n + 3)2-flow. Finally, the existence of k-flows for small graphs is investigated

Analysis of Capillary-Viscous-Gravity Forces in Biopolymer Flooding with a Sensitivity Analysis on Polymer and Porous Medium Parameters

    , Article Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology ; Vol. 35, issue. 12 , Aug , 2014 , p. 1764-1773 Hamidpour, E ; Mirzaei-Paiaman, A ; Ramazani, S. A. A ; Hatami, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Gravity, viscous, and capillary are three main forces affecting flow characteristics in porous media. No analytical solution can be found to model the flow by considering all these forces. In this work, by considering all these forces, the polymer-flooding process is modeled by using a numerical simulation approach. For characterizing the polymer, the modified Blake-Kozeny model is chosen, which benefits consideration of the permeability reduction due to polymer adsorption on the rock surface

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a data offloading algorithm in a network comprised of a macro base station and a few number of WiFi access points with overlapped coverage areas. The main goal of our algorithm is how to assign offloaded mobile stations (MSs) to access points (APs). Our approach in proposing the algorithm is based on mapping the problem onto finding a suitable matching algorithm, in order to minimize the average delay of the offloaded packets as one of the main QoS parameters on the one hand and to maximize the utility of the APs on the other hand. The utility of each AP is considered to be a combination of monetary benefit due to offloading service and the cost due to extra energy...

    Abstract
In this communication, a hybrid model based on Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) was constructed to predict CO2 corrosion rate. The input parameters of the model are temperature, CO2 partial pressure, flow velocity and pH. The data used for training and testing of the developed model are 612 and 109 data, respectively. In order to benefit LSSVM from Kernel learning, we compared three kernel functions to select the most efficient one. Furthermore, Coupled Simulated Annealing (CSA) optimization technique was adapted to choose the best optimal values of the model parameters. The results elucidate that Gaussian Kernel functions is the desired function which can afford high accuracy for...

    Abstract
The present work investigates joining of two MoSi2 parts through Cusil/Zr/Cusil interlayer with Cusil being a commercial eutectic of Cu-Ag alloy. The joining operation was implemented in an inert gas tube furnace by brazing. The brazing temperature ranged from 800 to 930°C while the operation lasted for 60min. Evaluation of joints strength through shear loading identified the maximum strength 60.31MPa for the brazed sample at 830°C. Interfacial microstructure was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Applying the temperature of 830°C was led to a uniform dense joint consisting of various phases with...

A novel PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization)-based approach for optimal schedule of refrigerators using experimental models

    Abstract
Refrigerators have considerable share of residential consumption. They can be, however, flexible loads because their operating time and consumption patterns can be changed to some extent. Accordingly, they can be selected as a target for the study of Demand Side Management plans. In this paper, two experimental models for a refrigerator are derived. In obtaining the first model, following assumptions are made: the ambient temperature of refrigerator is assumed to be constant and the refrigerator door is remained closed. However, in the second model the variation of ambient temperature and door-opening effects are considered according to some general patterns. Further, two strategies are...

    Abstract
Inert gold become catalytically active when dispersed in the form of nanoparticles. Isolated gold nanoparticles have demonstrated high catalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction reactions. In order to obtain high catalytic activity, gold nanoparticles are generally dispersed on support materials, among which oxides are commonly used. However, a substantial decrease in activity and selectivity of the immobilized catalysts is frequently observed due to the heterogeneous nature of these support materials in reaction media. In the course of our study on the metal-based catalysis for synthesis of organic compounds, we herein report that rod-shaped Au nanoparticles in aqua solution...

Secure Communication via Cooperation and Cooperative Jamming

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hatami, Mohammad (Author) ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes the propagation medium vulnerable to security attacks such as eavesdropping and jamming from adversarial or unauthorized users. Applying physical layer secrecy approaches will enable the exchange of confidential messages over a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers, without using any secret keys. However, physical layer security approaches are typically feasible only when the source-eavesdropper channel is weaker than the source-destination channel. Cooperative jamming can be used to overcome this challenge and increase the secrecy rate. In this thesis, the security of two-phase relaying system with multiple...

    Abstract
In this study, natural convection heat transfer in a vertical flat-plate solar air heater of 2.5 m height and 1 m width, with one- and two-glass covers was studied experimentally. Totally six cases of airflow (two for air heater with one glass cover and four for air heater with two-glass covers) were considered. These cases included states that air could flow within spaces between absorber plate and glass covers or air was enclosed in such spaces. Absorber plate temperature, back-plate temperature, glass cover temperatures, mass flow rates of air within channels and the solar radiation were measured. The following relations are suggested:. For channels in which air could flow:Nu = 0.7362...

    Abstract
Suppose we have a family F of sets. For every S∈F, a set D⊆S is a defining set for (F,S) if S is the only element of F that contains D as a subset. This concept has been studied in numerous cases, such as vertex colorings, perfect matchings, dominating sets, block designs, geodetics, orientations, and Latin squares. In this paper, first, we propose the concept of a defining set of a logical formula, and we prove that the computational complexity of such a problem is Σ2-complete. We also show that the computational complexity of the following problem about the defining set of vertex colorings of graphs is Σ2-complete: INSTANCE: A graph G with a vertex coloring c and an integer k.QUESTION: If...

Circular chromatic index of graphs of maximum degree 3

    Abstract
This paper proves that if G is a graph (parallel edges allowed) of maximum degree 3, then χc′(G) ≤ 11/3 provided that G does not contain H1 or H2 as a subgraph, where H1 and H2 are obtained by subdividing one edge of K23 (the graph with three parallel edges between two vertices) and K4, respectively. As χc′(H1) = χ c′(H2) = 4, our result implies that there is no graph G with 11/3 < χc′(G) < 4. It also implies that if G is a 2-edge connected cubic graph, then χc′(G) ≤ 11/3. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, inc
