    Abstract
The present work investigates joining of two MoSi2 parts through Cusil/Zr/Cusil interlayer with Cusil being a commercial eutectic of Cu-Ag alloy. The joining operation was implemented in an inert gas tube furnace by brazing. The brazing temperature ranged from 800 to 930°C while the operation lasted for 60min. Evaluation of joints strength through shear loading identified the maximum strength 60.31MPa for the brazed sample at 830°C. Interfacial microstructure was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Applying the temperature of 830°C was led to a uniform dense joint consisting of various phases with...

On the computational complexity of defining sets

    , Article Discrete Applied Mathematics ; Volume 149, Issue 1-3 , 2005 , Pages 101-110 ; 0166218X (ISSN) Hatami, H ; Maserrat, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Suppose we have a family F of sets. For every S∈F, a set D⊆S is a defining set for (F,S) if S is the only element of F that contains D as a subset. This concept has been studied in numerous cases, such as vertex colorings, perfect matchings, dominating sets, block designs, geodetics, orientations, and Latin squares. In this paper, first, we propose the concept of a defining set of a logical formula, and we prove that the computational complexity of such a problem is Σ2-complete. We also show that the computational complexity of the following problem about the defining set of vertex colorings of graphs is Σ2-complete: INSTANCE: A graph G with a vertex coloring c and an integer k.QUESTION: If...

A streaming algorithm for 2-center with outliers in high dimensions

    Abstract
We study the 2-center problem with outliers in high-dimensional data streams. Given a stream of points in arbitrary d dimensions, the goal is to find two congruent balls of minimum radius covering all but at most z points. We present a (1.8+ε)-approximation streaming algorithm, improving over the previous (4+ε)-approximation algorithm available for the problem. The space complexity and update time of our algorithm are poly(d,z,1/ε), independent of the size of the stream. © 2016 Elsevier B.V

Effects of interface conditions on thermo-mechanical fields of multi-phase nano-fibers/particles

    , Article Journal of Thermal Stresses ; Volume 32, Issue 11 , 2009 , Pages 1166-1180 ; 01495739 (ISSN) Hatami Marbini, H ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The stress field of a multi-phase spherical/cylindrical inhomogeneity with arbitrary interface bonding conditions, subjected to both a uniform temperature change and a uniform hydrostatic tension, is presented. Imperfect bonding conditions are modeled using linear spring model and coherent interface model. In nanosize inhomogeneities, since the surface energy is not negligible with respect to the bulk energy, the effect of surface stresses is incorporated into the formulation. Accurate estimates for the thermal stresses of a functionally graded coated inhomogeneity with perfect and /~or imperfect interfaces are given. The influence of coating stiffness, coating thickness and interface...

    Abstract
The determination of the thermo-mechanical stress field in and around a spherical/ cylindrical inhomogeneity surrounded by a functionally graded (FG) coating, which in turn is embedded in an infinite medium, is of interest. The present work, in the frame work of Boussinesq/Papkovich-Neuber displacement potentials method, discovers the potential functions by which not only the relevant boundary value problems (BVPs) in the literature, but also the more complex problem of the coated inhomogeneities with FG coating and sliding interfaces can be treated in a unified manner. The thermo-elastic fields pertinent to the inhomogeneities with multiple homogeneous coatings and various combinations of...

    Abstract
The stress fields of cylindrical and spherical multi-phase inhomogeneity systems with perfect or imperfect interfaces under uniform thermal and far-field mechanical loading conditions are investigated by use of the Boussinesq displacement potentials. The radius of the core inhomogeneity and the thickness of its surrounding coatings are arbitrary. The discontinuities in the tangential and normal components of the displacement at the imperfect interfaces are assumed to be proportional to the associated tractions. In this work, for the problems where the phases of the inhomogeneity system are homogeneous, the exact closed-form thermo-elastic solutions are presented. These solutions along with a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Miri Ramsheh, Saeed (Author) ; Rashtchian, Davoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The release of toxic materials causes tragic accidents every year. There are various techniques in order to mitigate the release effect of these materials such as Application of air jets, steam curtains and water curtains. In this study first, previous works are reviewed in order to select the best technique for the mitigation of heavy toxic gas release. Then CFD modeling is used to simulate this technique.
A field situation in which chlorine gas was released upwind of water spray was simulated using the open-source software FDS (Fire Dynamic Simulator), a CFD model. Only mechanical effects of water sprays are considered; hence the effect of absorbtion is neglected. Finally tha...

    Abstract
Refrigerators have considerable share of residential consumption. They can be, however, flexible loads because their operating time and consumption patterns can be changed to some extent. Accordingly, they can be selected as a target for the study of Demand Side Management plans. In this paper, two experimental models for a refrigerator are derived. In obtaining the first model, following assumptions are made: the ambient temperature of refrigerator is assumed to be constant and the refrigerator door is remained closed. However, in the second model the variation of ambient temperature and door-opening effects are considered according to some general patterns. Further, two strategies are...

    Abstract
Shear wall panels, including cold-formed steel frames and its attached sheathing, are common lateral load resisting systems of cold-formed steel structures. In this paper, the finite element method is used to study the lateral performance of shear wall panels. The finite element model is validated against experimental results of other researchers. Using the validated model, a parametric study is described to determine strength, drift and seismic behavior of the shear wall panels. Based on the results, it is concluded that the initial stiffness and ultimate lateral strength are dramatically affected by the thickness of the frame members, type of sheathing material, edge screw spacing, height...

    Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) has an essential role in most enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods in the oil industry. Oil swelling and viscosity reduction are the dominant mechanisms in an immiscible CO2-EOR process. Besides numerous CO2 applications in EOR, most oil reservoirs do not have access to natural CO2, and capturing it from flue gas and other sources is costly. Flue gases are available in huge quantities at a significantly lower price and can be considered economically viable agents for EOR operations. In this work, four powerful machine learning algorithms, namely, extra tree (ET), random forest (RF), gradient boosting (GBoost), and light gradient boosted machine (LightGBM) were utilized to...

    Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to study and fabricate stable inks of Cu2SnS3 (CTS), Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu3SbS4 (CAS) copper-based chalcogenide nanoparticles (NPs) and their application in solar cells. Inorganic semiconductors with p-type conductivity, high stability, high hole mobility (compared to organic type), and the ability to synthesize and deposition by simple low temperature solution-based methods have the potential to provide suitable alternative for hole-transporting material (HTM) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and the photo-absorbers in thin film solar cells (TFSCs). The ability to adjust energy levels and optoelectrical properties is another advantage of these compounds. In...

    Abstract
Inert gold become catalytically active when dispersed in the form of nanoparticles. Isolated gold nanoparticles have demonstrated high catalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction reactions. In order to obtain high catalytic activity, gold nanoparticles are generally dispersed on support materials, among which oxides are commonly used. However, a substantial decrease in activity and selectivity of the immobilized catalysts is frequently observed due to the heterogeneous nature of these support materials in reaction media. In the course of our study on the metal-based catalysis for synthesis of organic compounds, we herein report that rod-shaped Au nanoparticles in aqua solution...

Secure Communication via Cooperation and Cooperative Jamming

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hatami, Mohammad (Author) ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes the propagation medium vulnerable to security attacks such as eavesdropping and jamming from adversarial or unauthorized users. Applying physical layer secrecy approaches will enable the exchange of confidential messages over a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers, without using any secret keys. However, physical layer security approaches are typically feasible only when the source-eavesdropper channel is weaker than the source-destination channel. Cooperative jamming can be used to overcome this challenge and increase the secrecy rate. In this thesis, the security of two-phase relaying system with multiple...
