Fabrication and characterization of low-cost, bead-free, durable and hydrophobic electrospun membrane for 3D cell culture

    , Article Biomedical Microdevices ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , 2017 ; 13872176 (ISSN) Moghadas, H ; Saidi, M. S ; Kashaninejad, N ; Kiyoumarsioskouei, A ; Trung Nguyen, N ; Sharif University of Technology
This paper reports the fabrication of electrospun polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes/scaffolds that are suitable for three-dimensional (3D) cell culture. Through modification the ratio between PDMS and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as carrier polymer, we report the possibility of increasing PDMS weight ratio of up to 6 for electrospinning. Increasing the PDMS content increases the fiber diameter, the pore size, and the hydrophobicity. To our best knowledge, this is the first report describing beads-free, durable and portable electrospun membrane with maximum content of PDMS suitable for cell culture applications. To show the proof-of-concept, we successfully cultured epithelial lung...

The effect of plugging of tubes on failure of shell and tube heat exchanger

In shell and tube heat exchangers, deep cracks can occur in tube-to-tubesheet welding and repairing such cracks is an impossible task which makes these tubes totally out of service. To preserve the thermal and mechanical integrity of heat exchanger, a series of rods is passed through these tubes and then are welded to tubesheets from both ends. Due to the increased damages in the vicinity of plugged tubes, the effect of plugging the tubes in the surrounding tubes and tubesheet failure is investigated. To this end, using CFD analysis, the temperature and pressure were calculated throughout the heat exchanger and then, the deformations and stresses of the tubes and tubesheets were computed...

Greenhouse gas emission measurement and economic analysis of Iran natural gas fired power plants

    , Article Energy Policy ; Volume 60 , 2013 , Pages 200-207 ; 03014215 (ISSN) Shahsavari Alavijeh, H ; Kiyoumarsioskouei, A ; Asheri, M. H ; Naemi, S ; Shahsavari Alavije, H ; Basirat Tabrizi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
This study attempts to examine the natural gas fired power plants in Iran. The required data from natural gas fired power plants were gathered during 2008. The characteristics of thirty two gas turbine power plants and twenty steam power plants have been measured. Their emission factor values were then compared with the standards of Energy Protection Agency, Euro Union and World Bank. Emission factors of gas turbine and steam power plants show that gas turbine power plants have a better performance than steam power plants. For economic analysis, fuel consumption and environmental damages caused by the emitted pollutants are considered as cost functions; and electricity sales revenue are...
