Investigating the Application of y-Braced Frames in Seismic Performance of Steel Structures

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Majid Zamani, Sohail (Author) ; Vafai, Abolhassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Finding suitable locations for installing conventional concentric bracings such as X and V, without interfering with building architecture and its openings, is a routine challenge in building design. One of the less known forms of concentric bracings which can be used to solve this issue, is the y-shaped bracing composed of three braces. In the current thesis, results of analytical studies, computer modeling and experimental tests are presented to extend the knowledge of structural behavior of y-bracings. As the first step, effective buckling lengths of braces with rigid connections were found from equilibrium equations incorporating the effect of axial force on rotational stiffness of...

    Abstract
To obtain wider openings than those provided by Chevron bracing, the braces are cranked and connected to the frame corner by an additional brace to form double y-shaped bracings. However, y-bracings are prone to instability and out of plane buckling, accompanied by low hysteretic energy absorption. An experimental research program, focused on y-bracing, was conducted at the BHRC structural engineering laboratory. Specimens presented in this paper include three full-scale single bay frames, with symmetric y-bracing of different cross sections and connection types. In addition, one specimen with Chevron bracing was tested as a reference. A quasi-static cyclic loading was applied increasingly...

The Effects of Intentional Process Models on Goal Modeling and Process Conformance Checking

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farsayyad, Nazi (Author) ; Rafiei, Majid (Supervisor) ; Khedmati, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, requirement engineering and goal modeling have gained more attention among different organisations. Therefore, different methods have been designed to discover stakeholders’ requirements and translate them into process and organizational goals. Various goal models have been introduced to represent these goals and their relations towards each other. Still, these methods are manual representations of different process scenarios and do not relate to the actual behavior. In 2014, Map Miner Method (MMM) was introduced to discover intentional process models from event logs. MMM uses Hidden Markov Model (HMM) as a means to represent the process as a map model of strategies and...

    Abstract
Ring rolling is one of the most significant methods for producing rings with highly precise dimensions and superior qualities such as high strength uniformity, all accomplished without wasting any materials. In this article, we have achieved analytical formulas for calculating the pressure and shear friction over the contact arcs between the rollers and ring in the ring rolling process for the material in general nonlinear hardening property. We have also asserted the best mathematical model to predict friction for rolling processes. The method we use is based on calculating the analytical stress distribution. In other words, by using of Saint-Venan principal the stress components are...

Optimization of Scaled Composite Wing of Aircraft Jas-39 By Genetic Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zamani, Vahid (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Popular usage of composite materials in aerospace, civil and defense industries in the last decades has been caused more attention to optimization of composite problems. Due to natural complexity of composite problems, i.e. discrete nature, complex dependence between design variables, existence of too much local optimum and etc., traditional methods of optimization are inefficient and it is necessary to use a powerful method to work cost effectively. Genetic algorithm as a technique through evolutionary algorithms is the most popular methods of tackling composite problems. The success of a genetic algorithm can be quantified by estimating the cost, time required and the quality of final...

Experimental Study on Fluid Loss and its Effect on Permeability

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zamani, Hossein (Author) ; shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract

In order to prevent a blow out, cooling the bit, displacement of drilling particle, etc., it is necessary to use a suitable fluid called drilling mud. The construction of drilling mud, especially the oil base, has a high cost and covers more than 20% of drilling costs, so maintaining and proper use of it is important, as well as drilling the reservoir layer due to the higher permeability of this layer than Other layers allow the drilling mud to influx into the formation, which in addition to the cost of fluid loss, damage to the reservoir, reduce its permeability and many problems during production. Therefore, in order to investigate the phenomenon of fluid loss, measure its size and...

Multifractal Analysis in Tehran Stock Exchange: MFDFA Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemi, Navid (Author) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many studies point to a possible new stylized fact for financial time series: the multifractality. Several authors have already detected this characteristic in multiple time series in several countries. With that in mind and based on Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA) method, this thesis analyzes the multifractality in the Tehran Stock Exchange. This analysis is performed with daily data from Tepix index (Tehran stock exchange's main index) and other three highly marketable stocks in the Tehran Stock Exchange (Pharma index, Oil index and Metal index), wich making up 1782 observations for each index in the period from March 21, 2011 to Aug 22, 2018. We found that the studied...

    Abstract
In this paper, the design of an efficient sparse array, used to reconstruct the image from millimeter-wave signals, is presented. The proposed array takes advantage of the sparsity concept of the image in the spatial Fourier domain to reduce the number of array elements such that the beam pattern of the designed array meets the desired beamwidth and sidelobe level. Simulation and measured results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed design on high-quality reconstruction of the image, while 85% reduction in the number of elements is achieved as well as the reduction in scan time and system complexity

    Abstract
The goal of this paper is to reduce the antenna count in a millimeter (mm)-wave imaging system by proposing both hardware and software solutions. The concept of image sparsity in the transform domain is utilized to present the compressive sensing (CS) formulation for both mono-static and multistatic imaging at mm-wave frequencies. To reduce the complexity of the imaging system and reconstruction process, we introduce 1.5-D array structure, which is a random sparse array with orthogonal element locations. It is shown that the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the reconstructed image obtained by a 1.5-D array with 65% sparsity is very close to the PSNR of a uniform 2-D array for mono-static...

A feature fusion based localized multiple kernel learning system for real world image classification

    , Article Eurasip Journal on Image and Video Processing ; Volume 2017, Issue 1 , 2017 ; 16875176 (ISSN) Zamani, F ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Real-world image classification, which aims to determine the semantic class of un-labeled images, is a challenging task. In this paper, we focus on two challenges of image classification and propose a method to address both of them simultaneously. The first challenge is that representing images by heterogeneous features, such as color, shape and texture, helps to provide better classification accuracy. The second challenge comes from dissimilarities in the visual appearance of images from the same class (intra class variance) and similarities between images from different classes (inter class relationship). In addition to these two challenges, we should note that the feature space of...

Portfolio Optimization based on GARCH-EVT-Copula and ARMA-GARCH-EVT-Copula- Forecasting Models

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gheisari, Iman (Author) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we uses GARCH-EVT-copula and ARMA-GARCH-EVT-copula models to perform out-of-sample forecasts and simulate one-day-ahead returns for five stocks of Tehran Stock Exchange. We construct optimal portfolios based on the global minimum variance (GMV), minimum conditional value-at-risk (Min-CVaR) and certainty equivalence tangency (CET) criteria, and model the dependence structure between stock market returns by employing elliptical (Student-t and Gaussian) and Archimedean (Clayton) copulas. We analyze the performances of 42 risk modeling portfolio strategies using out-of-sample back-testing. Our main finding is that the Min-CVaR portfolio, based on ARMA-GARCH-EVT-Clayton forecasts,...
