Fault diagnosis in robot manipulators in presence of modeling uncertainty and sensor noise

, Article Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Control Applications, 8 July 2009 through 10 July 2009, Saint Petersburg ; 2009 , Pages 1750-1755 ; 9781424446025 (ISBN) Mohseni, S ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a new approach to fault detection and isolation for robot manipulators. Our technique is based on using a new simplified Euler-Lagrange (EL) equation that reduces complexity of the proposed fault detection method. The proposed approach isolates the faults and is capable of handling the uncertainty in manipulator gravity vector. It is shown that the effect of uncalibrated torque sensor measurement is asymptotically rejected in the detection process. A simulation example is presented to illustrate the results. © 2009 IEEE

Higgs in nilpotent supergravity: vacuum energy and festina lente

    , Article Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics ; Volume 844 , 2023 ; 03702693 (ISSN) Mohseni, A ; Torabian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this note we study supergravity models with constrained superfields. We construct a supergravity framework in which all (super)symmetry breaking dynamics happen in vacuum with naturally (or otherwise asymptotically) vanishing energy. Supersymmetry is generically broken in multiple sectors each of them is parametrized by a nilpotent goldstino superfield. Dynamical fields (the Higgs, inflaton, etc) below the supersymmetry breaking scale are constrained superfields of various types. In this framework, there is a dominant supersymmetry breaking sector which uplifts the potential to zero value. Other sources of supersymmetry breaking have (asymptotically) vanishing contribution to vacuum...

Temperature control of styrene bulk polymerization in a tubular reactor

    , Article CHISA 2006 - 17th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering, Prague, 27 August 2006 through 31 August 2006 ; 2006 ; 8086059456 (ISBN); 9788086059457 (ISBN) Ghafoor Mohseni, P ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Due to advantages of tubular polymerization reactors, a tubular reactor was used as the postpolymerizer for thermal bulk polymerization of styrene. By solving the mathematical model, static and dynamic simulations were carried out to study the reactor's behavior. In order to have a desired product regarding the monomer conversion and polydispersity at the reactor outlet, a specific temperature profile must be kept along the reactor's length. Based on the desired profile and using the system model, a trajectory for the jacket temperature was obtained. To apply the desired jacket temperature, the jacket is divided into three zones. The set-point of each zone has been obtained by discretizing...

    Abstract
The main focus of this study is to address the possibility of using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, as a computational framework, coupled with experimental assays, to optimize composite structures of a particular electrospun scaffold. To this aim, first, MD simulations were performed to obtain an initial theoretical insight into the capability of heterogeneous surfaces for protein adsorption. The surfaces were composed of six different blends of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) and PCL (polycaprolactone) with completely unlike hydrophobicity. Next, MTT assay was performed on the electrospun scaffolds made from the same percentages of polymers as in MD models to gain an understanding of the...

Application of minimum plutonium criteria at EOC to optimize the fuel loading pattern in VVER-1000 reactors

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 269-276 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Mohseni, N ; Boroushaki, M ; Ghofrani, M. B ; Raji, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Most of the strategies yet implemented to optimal fuel loading pattern design in nuclear power reactors, are based on maximizing the core effective multiplication factor (Keff) to extract maximum energy and lowering the local power peaking factor (Pq) from a predetermined value. However, a new optimization criterion could be of interest, aiming at maximum burn-up of the plutonium content in fuel assemblies, i.e., minimization of remaining plutonium in spent fuel at the end of cycle (EOC). In this research, we developed a new strategy for optimal fuel core loading pattern of a VVER-1000 reactor, based on multi-objective optimization: lowering the Pq, maximization of the Keff and minimization...

    Abstract
Most of the strategies yet implemented to optimize fuel loading pattern design in the nuclear power reactors, are based on maximizing the core effective multiplication factor (Keff) in order to extract maximum energy and to reduce the local power peaking factor (Pq) from a set value. However, a new optimization criterion would be of interest in order to maximize the burn-up of the plutonium content (Pu) in the fuel assemblies. In this research we have developed a new strategy based on multi objective optimization, to optimize fuel core loading pattern for a VVER-1000 reactor. In this approach we simultaneously have reduced the Pq, maximized Keff and also minimized the plutonium content in...

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 11, Issue 3 , 2002 , Pages 151-157+209 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Frounchi, M ; Mehrabzadeh, M ; Mohseni, S. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
Phase morphology, state of compatibility and various properties of blends of polycarbonate (PC) with bottle-grade and fibre-grade polyethylene terephthalate (BPET and FPET, respectively) were investigated. It was found that these blends have two-phase separated morphology with partial miscibility. Scanning electron micrographs revealed separated domains of PC-rich and PET-rich zones. PC domains appear spherical increasing in size from 2 μm for PC20/FPET80 up to about 5 μm for PC60/FPET40 blend. Further increase in PC content up to 80% caused phase inversion in which FPET appears as finely dispersed domains in continuous PC matrix. Tg of PC-rich phase decreased from 153 deg;C for pure PC down...

Using nucleators to control freckles in unidirectional solidification

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 33, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 1209-1215 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Alavi Dehkordi, E ; Esmaily Moghadam, M ; Mohseni Koochesfahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Buoyancy-induced fluid flow, which is responsible for most forms of macro-segregation and channel-type segregates in castings, is not directly controllable. If left uncontrolled, natural convection will contribute to non-uniform distribution of alloy constituents and grain structure during solidification of a casting. Non-uniform distribution of chemical composition and physical structure in an alloy casting can significantly affect the reliability of mechanical components. Therefore, materials with acceptable defects can be produced only by trial-and-error and their acceptability is determined by costly inspections. We present a novel technique to control the formation of chimneys and...

    Abstract
Previous in-vivo investigations on the stabilizing efficacy of knee bracing for ACL reconstructed patients have been often limited to 20-30 degrees of knee flexion. In this study, the effectiveness of a uniaxial hinged functional brace to improve the knee stability was assessed at 30, 60 and 90 degrees of knee flexion. Arthrometry tests were conducted on 15 healthy subjects before and following wearing the brace and the tibial displacements were measured at up to 150 N anterior forces. Results indicated that functional bracing has a significant stabilizing effect throughout the range of knee flexion examined (p < 0.05). The rate of effectiveness, however, was not consistent across the...

    Abstract
Quality of Experience (QoE) measures the overall quality of a service from users’ point of view by considering several system, human, and contextual factors. There exist various objective and subjective methods for QoE prediction. Although the subjective approach is more expensive and challenging than the objective approach, QoE’s level can be more accurately determined by a subjective test. This paper investigates various features affecting QoE by proposing a comprehensive subjective evaluation. First, we show that many unconsidered factors can significantly affect QoE. We have generated voice samples featuring different values for novel factors related to the speaker, signal, and network....
