Numerical Simulation of Electrospray with Presence of Cone-Jet

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghate Ghushchi, Mehran (Author) ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this work, the cone-jet mode of electrospray is simulated by a two phase solver in OpenFoam software. For this aim firstly, breakup of a liquid jet is examined without applying any electric potential to the injecting capillary and results are compared with other works to evaluate the two phase solver. Next with applying electric potential, the whole evolution of cone-jet in time is simulated. One of the most important issues in this mode is the minimum potential that needs to form a stable cone-jet in different flow rates. These minimum voltages are obtained in various flow rates and compared with other experimental and computational works. Result shows that with increasing flow rate the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nasiri, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, the numerical simulation of liquid jet ejecting for a series of elliptical orifices into gaseous phase with different aspect ratios, at Rayleigh flow regime and in a range of Weber numbers has been performed.
For simulations, the OpenFoam software was utilized, which its multiphase flow simulation solvers are based on volume of fluid (VOF) method. In order to achieve the most accurate results for axis-switching phenomenon and jet breakup length, the dynamic mesh refinement was used for all the examined cases. The results, which were validated with recent experimental and numerical works, indicate that jet breakup length raises by increasing Weber number from 20 to 300....

Experimental Analysis of Surface Temperature and Geometry Effects for Drop Impact on Solid Surfaces

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jowkar, Saeed (Author) ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
When a liquid drop impacts on a hot non-flat surface the curvature of the surface and its geometrical characteristics transmute the physical regimes and their boundary compared to a flat surface impact. The present experimental study is focused on water drop impingement on the mimetic solid semi-cylindrical convex and concave hot surfaces. The thermal versus inertia map of generated regimes is obtained, while some well-known regimes associated with a flat surface are not observed for the present non-flat impacts. The maximum spreading of the droplet is measured at different surface temperatures and impact Weber numbers for the case of droplet impingement on the convex surface. In directrix...

Swirl Injector Modeling for Cryogenic Propulsion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefi, Alireza (Author) ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Flow analysis in and out of the pressure-swirl injector in supercritical condition is investigated in this thesis. These injectors widely are used in different industries such gas turbine combustion chamber and liquid fuel rockets. Flow simulation in these injectors is so complex because of existence of gas core in axial region and high swirl and axial speeds in injectors. Unlike subcritical condition, droplet and ligament don’t form in supercritical condition so injector performance represents with two parameters including liquid film thickness in vortex chamber and liquid spreading angle. Mass flow, geometric constant, length and the distance between tangential inlet and injector head, are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hassan Beikian, Somayeh (Author) ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the key features of multiphase flow applications is the creation of as little liquid droplets as possible. For example, it is important to use combustion to burn liquid fuels in combustion chambers, fuel-air mixing and complete evaporation of fuel. Liquid fuel should be converted into small droplets and then mixed with air quickly and evaporated. This challenge has been investigated using injectors of various designs and is still being investigated. One of the injectors used is injectors where both gas and liquid are injected into the injector and supplemented with each other. These injectors are referred to as focal injectors, in which gas flows through a typical orifice to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltani Nasab, Morteza (Author) ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the construction of the first models of internal combustion engines in the nineteenth century, efficiency and, since the late twentieth century, pollution and fuel consumption has been the main issue for researchers and manufacturers who have always sought to improve it. Manufacturers of internal combustion engines are required to perform numerous tests to carefully study and increase the level of technology and reliability of their products. There have been two ways for them to do this; the first way is to use the experimental method; that is, making multiple samples that require a high cost that makes it impossible. The second way is to use engine simulation software, which can be...
