, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mostaghimi Rezazade, Saeed (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The only problem in aviation and airport development is the noise print on population groups surrounding airports due to its high frequency it is so annoying for human ear. In order to overcome this problem technology has reached its edge and the only alternative is to deviate terminal flight path.In this thesis I tried find a pattern for optimizing terminal flight path considering a Boeing 737-800 taking off from Mehrabad airport’s runway 29. To do this we were in need of a huge database of airplane low speed model, geographic information and population knowledge. The common approaches used by FAA and other international organizations for modeling low speed flight were used. The influence of...

    Abstract
The hydrodynamics of two immiscible fluids in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell under the influence of a magnetic field is studied, both theoretically and numerically. A linear stability analysis is conducted to determine the effect of magnetic fields on the formation of viscous fingers. As a result, an analytical solution is found to calculate the growth rate of perturbations. For numerical simulation of the two-phase flow, the interfacial tension is treated as a body force using the continuum surface force model and the interface tracking is performed by the volume of fluid method. The variations of the width and growth rate of fingers in an unstable displacement versus Hartmann number, a...

Application of optimal PWM of induction motor in synchronous machines at high power ratings

    , Article 2007 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics, AIM, Zurich, 4 September 2007 through 7 September 2007 ; 2007 ; 1424412641 (ISBN); 9781424412648 (ISBN) Sayyah, A ; Aflaki, M ; Rezazade, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The proposed current harmonic model for high-power synchronous machines is dependent on the inductances of quadrature and direct axes. Variation of these parameters, as a consequence of modification in operating point, aging and temperature rise, in-progress pulse patterns, are no longer optimal solutions for minimization of harmonic losses. On the other hand, offline calculation of optimal pulse patterns for slight changes in these parameters, and storing them in read-only memories to serve as look-up tables, give rise to immoderate computational burden and unmanageable look-up tables. Notwithstanding performing online identification process and offline calculation of optimal pulse...

    Abstract
In this study, a genetic algorithm optimization technique is applied, to minimize the total harmonic current distortion (THCD) in induction motors fed by high power inverters, based on an approximate model. That is, having defined a desired fundamental output voltage, optimal pulse patterns (switching angles) are determined to produce the fundamental output voltage while minimizing the THCD. The complete results for two cases of 3 and 5 switching instants in the first quarter period of PWM waveform are presented. In the sequel, considering that the torque pulsation is mainly affected by the presence of low-order harmonics, the fifth, seventh, 11th, and 13th order harmonics (in the case of 5...

    Abstract
In this paper the aim is to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD) in PWM inverters while suppressing chosen harmonics concurrently and maintaining the fundamental component of the output voltage at a required level. This is reformed as an optimization task and the optimal pulse patterns are accomplished using genetic algorithm (GA) optimization technique to minimize a predefined fitness function. The complete solutions that suppress the 5 th and 7 th harmonics and optimize the THD are given. A practical limitation on the determination of sequential switching angles has been considered as a set of constraints in derivation of the results. © 2006 IEEE

    Abstract
This study presents a powerful application of genetic algorithm (GA) for the minimization of the total harmonic current distortion (THCD) in high-power induction motors fed by voltage source inverters, based on an approximate harmonic model. That is, optimal pulse patterns (switching angles) are determined to have the THCD minimized and the fundamental output voltage regulated concurrently. As the minimization of THCD corresponds to the minimization of harmonic copper losses of the motor windings, GA optimization technique has been utilized, in comparison with conventional optimization methods due to its capabilities of searching the entire solution space with more probability of finding the...

    Abstract
Applying upscaling techniques is an undeniable demand in reservoir simulation, considering the difference between level of details in a geological model and level of details that can be handled by reservoir simulators. Upscaling reservoir model involves first constructing a coarse grid by employing gridding algorithms and then computing average properties for coarse grid blocks. Although various techniques have been proposed for each of these steps, one has to be aware of strengths and weaknesses of each technique before attempting to apply them. In this paper, we focus on different gridding methods and evaluate their performances. Three main grid generation techniques are considered:...

    Abstract
In this article we develop a 'Stakeholder Mapping' approach to ex-ante policy evaluation. The proposed framework helps to assess policy implementation activities by applying several tests to evaluate the completeness, non-redundancy, proper assignment and internal consistency of a policy design. We illustrate the method by applying it to the analysis of e-commerce policy in Iran. We conclude by assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the approach. © 2009 SAGE Publications

    Abstract
As Gregory Bateson, the British social scientists, once said "You can't live without an eraser", the process of learning is not a unidirectional way toward accumulation of knowledge, rather, organizations should critically evaluate the value of their knowledge and if necessary, actively forget no-longer-useful knowledge. A brief review of related literature shows that the concept of knowledge active forgetting (KAF) is a crucial aspect of organizational learning and knowledge management. However, many aspects of this topic deserve more attention by researchers. The main gap in the literature seems to be related to the linkage between peculiar aspects of knowledge (such as stickiness, context...

    Abstract
The rapid technological changes have faced organizations with a new challenge: old and obsolete knowledge when it hampers organizational change or creates some kind of possible negative impact. Hence, in many cases, companies need to actively deal with such old and obsolete knowledge and their possible negative impacts in order to survive in highly competitive market. Defining unlearning as the intentional process of managing the old and obsolete knowledge in order to reduce its possible negative impacts, this study focuses on how organizations manage their old and obsolete knowledge and how the pattern of unlearning actions varies based on different types of knowledge.

    , Article IET Communications ; July 2011, Volume 5, Issue 10, P. 1328-1335 Mashhadi, S. (Saeed) ; Mashhadi, Saeed ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study the authors present an in-depth study, analysis and discussion on maximum likelihood (ML)-based receiver for a typical spectrally encoded spread-time CDMA in the presence of multiple narrowband interference (NBI) signals in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate that by combining useful properties of ML-based receiver and three-level codes, that is, codes with values of -1, 0, +1, the authors can introduce a new strategy in which superior performance with respect to previous receiver structure based on two-level codes, that is, codes with values of -1, +1, can be attained. With the help of an example, the authors drive, first, the...

Investigation of Multiphase Flow in Oil Wells (with Focus on Two Phase Flow), Flow Pattern Recognition and Modeling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shams, Reza (Author) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The concurrent flow of oil and water is a common occurrence in the field of multiphase flow in different fields including petroleum industry. In oil and gas, production engineers often face a situation in which more than one phase is flowing through the producers. In such conditions an accurate assessment of pressure loss inside the well plays a vital role in efficient and effective production planning. Changes in well orientation, wellbore diameter, reservoir and fluid properties as well as fluid flow rates are among parameters in which will affect the flow patterns that can occur inside a well during its life time. These flow patterns are created as a result of a competition between...

Casing Design Optimization Considering Drilling and Production Conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadeghi, Mahdi (Author) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Casing design is one of the most expensive parts in the drilling of oil wells, and any cost reduction with the basic design of these casing strings will significantly reduce the total cost of the operation. In recent years, occurring scenarios-based casing design has become popular; Because in many cases, it eliminates non-occurring scenarios such as gas kick and saves on drilling costs. In this study, we have tried to investigate all scenarios that may occur during the lifetime of the well, whether drilling or production, and for each well, based on its own field information, possible scenarios for each casing part are selected separately and the applying loads are calculated. For this...

PRI (Palm Rotation Indicator): a metric for postural stability in dynamic nonprehensile manipulation [electronic resource]

, Article Journal of MECHANIKA ; 2012, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 461-466 Beigzadeh, B. (Borhan) ; Meghdar, Ali ; Sohrabpour, Saeed ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, we discuss the postural stability of a nonprehensile manipulation problem, which deals with multibody objects. As a metric for postural stability, we define PRI. Then, the system is posturally stable, if PRI is inside the convex hull of the object-manipulator contact surface. We then discuss that dynamic biped locomotion is a special case of dynamic nonprehensile manipulation in all aspects; we prove that ZMP (zero-moment point) and FRI (zoot rotation indicator) are special cases of PRI (palm rotation indicator). Simulations and experiments corresponding to simple examples support the results

Electrochemical Determination of Piroxicam at thin Carbon
Nanoparticle Composite And Investigation of the Electrochemical Behavior and Synthesis of Catechols in the Presence of Mercapto Methyl Tetrazol as a Nucleophile

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jokar, Effat (Author) ; Shahrokhian, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The electrochemical oxidation behavior of the anti-inflammatory drug piroxicam was investigated. A carbon nanoparticle (CNP)-chitosan (CS) film-coated graphite electrode (PGE) was fabricated and the electrochemical behaviors of piroxicam on its surface was investigated by the means of cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In comparison to the bare PGE, at the surface of the CNP-CS film modified electrode, the oxidation peak current of piroxicam increased significantly and the peak potential shifted negatively. Consequently, a simple and sensitive electroanalytical method was developed for the determination of piroxicam. The...

    Abstract
There are high attractions in the development of conducting polymer (CP) coatings to improve the electrochemical properties and biocompatibility of electrodes in the area of biosensors. In the first part of this thesis, a new type of modified electrodes, constructing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polypyrrole is prepared in a layer-by-layer process. In this procedure, the glassy carbon electrode is casted first by a drop suspension of MWCNTs, leading to formation a thin film on its surface. In the second step, electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of tiron (used as doping anion) is performed on the surface of the MWCNTs pre-coated electrode. The modification...
