, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Abolhassan (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) nanofibrous membranes in order to separate the contaminants of an industrial wastewater were prepared. Electrospinning process that is an effective method to fabricate nanofibers was used to prepare the membranes. Since various parameters affect this process and fibers morphology, optimization of these parameters is necessary for preparation of improved membranes. So the effect of parameters of solvent system, polymer concentration, applied voltage, distance between the tip of needle and collector, and rotational speed of collector on morphology and diameter of the nanofibers was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image...

Improvement of Security Features of Communication Networks with Network Coding

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mousavi, Nima (Author) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Salmasizadeh, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we study security features of the networks which use linear network coding to multicast information to some nodes of the network in presence of a wiretapper and also an active intruder. We consider information theoretic security in which we assume no computation limits for enemy. Thus, we take advantage of the essence of network coding instead of cryptographic tools to improve security features of the network. First, we show how providing shannon security for such networks in presence of wiretapper, leads to different cost in multicast rate, depending on initial network code designed. Based on this, we present a modified secure network code design which can provide perfect...

    Abstract
In this study, modification of Polyvinylidene fluoride membrane in order to reduce membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors is investiged. To achieve this goal, chemical modification and grafting methods were used. Initially, by chemical modification, the reaction was made to make hydroxyl groups on the membrane surface. The hydroxyl functional groups were used as a site for connecting of subsequent monomers. Finally, the lysozyme enzyme was used as the main modifier to improve the hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties of the membrane surface. To evaluate the performance of the modified membrane in comparison with the pristine membrane, different tests, such as water contact angle...

Optimum receiver design for transmitted-reference signaling [electronic resource]

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; May 2010, Volume 58, Issue 5, P.1589-1598 Farhang, M. (Mahmoud) ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Autocorrelation receiver (AcR) is usually used as the general receiver for transmitted reference (TR) communication systems on a quite intuitive basis. In this paper, we apply the principle of statistical invariance to obtain the optimum TR receiver on a decision-theoretic basis, and it is shown that the autocorrelation receiver is optimal only in a special case. Performance of the optimum receiver and the suboptimum AcR for some important modulation schemes is also evaluated. The results imply that allocating a part of the transmitted energy and bandwidth to reference pulses would not help improve the performance of the system and the optimal performance might be achieved via much simpler...

Impact of Hydraulic Hysteresis on Hydro-mechanical Behaviour of Infilled Fractured Rocks in Unsaturated Condition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mousavi, Masoud (Author) ; Khosravi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recent studies have shown that comprehensive characterization of the behavior of infilled rock fractures under saturated and unsaturated conditions requires knowledge of morphological details of fracture surface, as well as state of stress of infill materials and their initial innate conditions (e.g., void ratio, water content, degree of saturation and dry density). This study presents the details and typical results from a new testing approach to study the hydro-mechanical behavior of the infilled rock fractures under different stress states and saturation conditions. The new testing approach incorporates the axis translation technique for suction control, a flow pump for the measurement of...

Design and assessment of variable-structure LQG PID multivariable controllers

    , Article Optimal Control Applications and Methods ; 2016 ; 01432087 (ISSN) Mousavi, H ; Nobakhti, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Control Performance Assessment (CPA) and tuning of PID controllers are studied in this paper. We propose a framework for systematic analysis of the tradeoff between the structural complexity of the controller and its performance. As the measure of the controller performance, an LQG based index is used. The problem is augmented with an additional term which forces sparsity on the complexity of a decentralized PID controller. The desired complexity is controlled via a weighting parameter which determines the cost of each additional element (i.e., P, I, and D terms). The result is a decentralized multivariable PID controller in which the complexity of each loop controller is optimized such that...

Controllability of Networked Systems based on Structural Features of Proximity Graphs

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mousavi, Shima (Author) ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, there has been a surge of research activities in the area of networks in the systems and control community. One foundational class of questions on networked systems pertains to their controllability. While there are classical tests to check the controllability of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, their applications to large-scale networks is numerically infeasible. Indeed, finding a minimum cardinality set of input nodes that ensure the controllability of a network is NP-hard. Moreover, when the interaction strengths along the edges of a network are unknown, the classical controllability test cannot be applied. To overcome these issues, an alternative set of approaches involves...
