    , Article Spine ; Vol. 39, Issue. 26 , 2014 , pp. E1608-E1615 ; ISSN: 1362-2436 Hadizadeh, M ; Mousavi, S. J ; Sedaghatnejad, E ; Talebian, S ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Study Design. A cross-sectional study to quantify trunk motor control during multidirectional isometric tracking tasks.Objective. To investigate the effect of chronic low back pain (LBP) on trunk neuromuscular performance while participants performed isometric exertions of trunk muscles to track targets in different angles with various magnitudes.Summary of Background Data. Tracking tasks especially in multidirectional activities are among the common research methods to quantify human motor control in different conditions. However, little information is available on trunk motor control during these tasks. There is no study investigating trunk accuracy during multidirectional isometric...

Translation and validation of the Persian version of the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales 2-Short Form (AIMS2-SF) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    , Article Clinical Rheumatology ; Volume 28, Issue 5 , 2009 , Pages 521-527 ; 07703198 (ISSN) Askary Ashtiani, A. R ; Mousavi, S. J ; Parnianpour, M ; Montazeri, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Cultural adaptation and validation of the Persian version of the Arthritis Measurement Scales 2-Short Form (AIMS2-SF). The translation and cultural adaptation of the original questionnaire was carried out in accordance with published guidelines. Three hundred and fifty consecutive Persian-speaking patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were asked to complete the AIMS2-SF, the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and four visual analog scales (VAS) for pain, joint stiffness, and patient's and physician's global assessment to test convergent validity. In addition, 90 randomly selected patients were asked to complete the questionnaire 48 h later for the second time. Moderate to high correlation...

Dynamic iso-resistive trunk extension simulation: Contributions of the intrinsic and reflexive mechanisms to spinal stability

    Abstract
The effects of external resistance on the recruitment of trunk muscles and the role of intrinsic and reflexive mechanisms to ensure the spinal stability are significant issues in spinal biomechanics. A computational model of spine under the control of 48 anatomically oriented muscle actions was used to simulate iso-resistive trunk movements. Neural excitation of muscles was attained based on inverse dynamics approach along with the stability-based optimization. The effect of muscle spindle reflex response on the trunk movement stability was evaluated upon the application of a perturbation moment. In this study, the trunk extension movement at various resistance levels while extending from...

    Abstract
It has been suggested that the central nervous system simplifies muscle control through basic units, called synergies. In this study, we have developed a novel target-matching protocol and used non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) technique to extract trunk muscle synergies and corresponding torque synergies. Isometric torque data at the L5/S1 level and electromyographic patterns of twelve abdominal and back muscles from twelve healthy participants (five females) were simultaneously recorded. Each participant performed a total number of 24 isometric target-matching tasks using 12 different angular directions and 2 levels of uniaxial and biaxial exertions. Within- and between-subject...

    Abstract
STUDY DESIGN.: An experimental design to investigate activation patterns of trunk muscles during multidirectional exertions. OBJECTIVES.: To evaluate trunk muscle activation patterns in varying directions and moment magnitudes during an isometric task, and to investigate the effects of angle and level of isometric exertion on the electromyography (EMG) variability of trunk muscles in upright posture. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: Few studies have investigated trunk muscle activation patterns in multidirectional exertions with different moment magnitudes. METHODS.: A total of 12 asymptomatic male subjects were participated in the study. The EMG activity of 10 selected trunk muscles was...

Effects of cognitive load on the amount and temporal structure of postural sway variability in stroke survivors

    Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the variability in postural sway patterns during quiet standing in stroke survivors. The postural sway was measured in 19 stroke survivors, as well as 19 healthy demographically matched participants, at 3 levels of postural difficulty (rigid surface with closed and open eyes, and foam surface with closed eyes), and 3 levels of cognitive difficulty (without a cognitive task, easy and difficult cognitive tasks). Both linear analyses (the amount of postural sway variability, including the standard deviation of the COP velocity in both the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions), as well as non-linear analyses [the temporal structure of the COP...
