Fast estimation of space-robots inertia parameters: A modular mathematical formulation

    , Article Acta Astronautica ; Volume 127 , 2016 , Pages 283-295 ; 00945765 (ISSN) Nabavi Chashmi, S. Y ; Malaek, S. M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
This work aims to propose a new technique that considerably helps enhance time and precision needed to identify "Inertia Parameters (IPs)" of a typical Autonomous Space-Robot (ASR). Operations might include, capturing an unknown Target Space-Object (TSO), "active space-debris removal" or "automated in-orbit assemblies". In these operations generating precise successive commands are essential to the success of the mission. We show how a generalized, repeatable estimation-process could play an effective role to manage the operation. With the help of the well-known Force-Based approach, a new "modular formulation" has been developed to simultaneously identify IPs of an ASR while it captures a...

On the identifiability of inertia parameters of planar multi-body space systems

    , Article Acta Astronautica ; Volume 145 , April , 2018 , Pages 199-215 ; 00945765 (ISSN) Nabavi Chashmi, S. Y ; Malaek, S. M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
This work describes a new formulation to study the identifiability characteristics of Serially Linked Multi-body Space Systems (SLMBSS). The process exploits the so called “Lagrange Formulation” to develop a linear form of Equations of Motion w.r.t the system Inertia Parameters (IPs). Having developed a specific form of regressor matrix, we aim to expedite the identification process. The new approach allows analytical as well as numerical identification and identifiability analysis for different SLMBSSs' configurations. Moreover, the explicit forms of SLMBSSs identifiable parameters are derived by analyzing the identifiability characteristics of the robot. We further show that any SLMBSS...

A fault-tolerant resource locking protocol for multiprocessor real-time systems

    , Article Microelectronics Journal ; Volume 137 , 2023 ; 00262692 (ISSN) Nabavi, S. S ; Farbeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2023
    Abstract
This paper presents the first fault-tolerant resource locking protocol for multiprocessor real-time systems. Resource locking protocols control access to shared resources in real-time systems. Most of the previous studies in resource locking protocols have focused on decreasing blocking time and resource conflicts. The use of such protocols in multiprocessor safety-critical real-time systems necessitates fault tolerance in the design of these systems. However, in research focused on multiprocessor real-time systems, fault tolerance has received low attention in resource allocation studies. In addition, many solutions proposed to improve the reliability in real-time scheduling ignored...

    Abstract
Metal-free D–D–π–A type dyes (i.e., Car-Cy, Car-Rh, Dpa-Cy, and Dpa-Rh) were designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In the structure of the sensitized dyes, an imidazole ring is connected to a carbazole or diphenylamine moiety as a donor while cyanoacetic acid or rhodanine-3-acetic acid was introduced as an acceptor/anchor. The molecular structures of D–D–π–A type dyes were characterized using IR, NMR and MS spectral data. The optical, electrochemical, theoretical, light harvesting property, HOMO/LUMO levels, redox behavior, and photovoltaic properties of the synthesized dyes were evaluated. Among the fabricated photovoltaic devices based on the prepared dye, Dpa-Cy...

    Abstract
In this study, effects of glycerol (10, 20, and 30 wt%) and Sodium Montmorillonite (Na-MMT) (0%, 2.5%, and 5%) contents on the degradation of corn starch polymers were investigated. Films were prepared by casting corn starch solution using a modified method to enhance the nanoclay distribution. Biodegradability studies were performed by enzymatic and burial tests using pristine and enriched soils. The biodegradability of samples in pristine soil was faster, and all samples were fully degraded in 6 months. The effect of nanoparticles on the mass reduction in degradation was more pronounced than that of glycerol. In all glycerol concentrations, Na-MMT addition increased tensile strength. FTIR...

    Abstract
Optical signal propagation through underwater channels is affected by three main degrading phenomena, namely, absorption, scattering, and fading. In this paper, we experimentally study the statistical distribution of intensity fluctuations in underwater wireless optical channels with random temperature and salinity variations, as well as the presence of air bubbles. In particular, we define different scenarios to produce random fluctuations on the water refractive index across the propagation path and, then, examine the accuracy of various statistical distributions in terms of their goodness of fit to the experimental data. We also obtain the channel coherence time to address the average...

    Abstract
Twitter as one of the most important microblogging online social networks has attracted more than 200 million users in recent years. Although there have been several attempts on characterizing the Twitter by using incomplete sampled data, they have not been very successful to estimate the characteristics of the whole network. In this paper, we characterize Twitter by sampling from its social graph and user behaviors through a random walk based sampling technique called Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS). To the best of our knowledge, for the first time RDS method and its estimator are used in order to obtain uniform unbiased estimation of several key structural and behavioral properties of...

    Abstract
Chitosan-coated human serum albumin nanoparticles were functionalized by MUC1 aptamer to obtain a selective drug carrier toward cancers overexpressing MUC1. The negative charges of albumin nanoparticles were shifted to positive charges by surface modification with chitosan, and MUC1 was conjugated through an acrylate spacer. The cytotoxicity of targeted nanoparticles was significantly more than non-aptamer nanoparticles, and also the chitosan-coated nanoparticles had more cytotoxic effects than the negatively charged albumin nanoparticles. The IC50 of targeted nanoparticles was 28 and 26% of free paclitaxel in MCF7 and T47D cells at 48 h, respectively. Confocal laser scanning electron...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabavi, Vahid (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Seismic isolation is a method for seismic-resistant design of structures against earthquake and is one of the important control of structures technologies. Codification and publishing of codes for design of seismic isolation takes place widely since 1980s and this codification has undergone extensive evolutions during its developing process. In this project initially the developing process and fundamentals of codifying regulations of seismic design have been investigated and then the developing process of codifying regulations of seismic isolation in current important international codes like ASCE7-05, Eurocode 8, and Japanese code has also been considered. After considering these two...

Design and Implementation of Resource Allocation Mechanisms in Fault-tolerant Distributed Real-time Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabavi, Sahebeh (Author) ; Miremadi, Ghassem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important characteristics of real-time systems is executing tasks before their specified deadlines. The tasks’ execution may require several resources like processor, I/O ports, and data structures. Some of these resources may be shared between several tasks and their availability is important in executing tasks before the deadlines. Allocating shared resources which are used in mutually exclusive manner often encounteres some problems such as priority inversion and deadlock. Resource access protocols are used to minimize or eliminate these problems. The effect of using these protocols issupporting tasks’ execution before their deadlines. To meet deadlines is of decisive...

Equalizer Design for Underwater Optical Wireless Channels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabavi, Pooya (Author) ; Salehi, Jawad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The increasing tendency to offshore exploration is making the need to design efficient methods for secure underwater wireless transmission increasingly highlighted. Radio frequency used for wireless communications in open space may not be suitable for data transfer due to their extensive drop in the water. On the other hand, since sound propagates well in water, now the majority of underwater communication systems are using audio frequencies. Limited bandwidth, low emission speed, and low security are the most important disadvantages of audio systems in comparison with optical systems. Therefore, optical systems, could be appropriate alternatives for audio systems to achieve secure,...

Analysis of Time-Modality Relationship in Diodorus Cronus Master Argument from the Viewpoint of Modern Logic

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Barzegar, Ali (Author) ; Nabavi, Lotfollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Diodorus Cronus, the Megaric Logician, in an attempt to define possibility and necessity, formulated an argument which after him was known as Diodorus Cronus Master Argument. According to extant historical accounts, Master Argument consists of three premises which according to Diodorus form an inconsistency, so that results in the rejection of Aristotelian notion of possibility and establishment of determinism. But the argument itself i.e. how three premises of the Master Argument form an inconsistency, has been lost. Therefore a number of logicians has decided to reconstruct the Master Argument and thereby reveal its inner structure in order to evaluate its validity.
    On the other hand,...

Model based data gathering for Online Social Network Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabavi, Nasim (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Communication among people over the emerging networks has been the focus of attention in different branches of science during last decades. Online Social Networks (OSNs), with more than hundreds of millions of users are powerful means for directing information within and across societies. Thus, studying various aspects of OSNs is an important issue for researchers. Due to large number of users and friendship relationships among them, gathering complete information from an OSN is not feasible. On the other hand, hiding users information and crawlers limitations are challenges for gathering complete data. A Common solution for this problem is Sampling from OSNs. Sampling from OSNs (and...

Application Communication-aware Data Center Energy Optimization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabavi Nejad, Morteza (Author) ; Goudarzi, Maziar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Virtualization has provided good and efficient use of resources in today datacenters. In this environment, modules of multi-tier applications can run on several Virtual Machines (VMs). VMs that are dedicated to a module often need to transfer data among themselves, and also to the VMs in other modules, and hence, the overall application runtime may be increased if the communicating VMs are put on far physical machines; consequently, servers must be up for a longer time and will consume more energy. Consolidating several VMs on a single Physical Machine (PM) effectively reduces the total computing power consumption, but we show that it is also important to consider the above inter-VM...

Should methodological naturalists commit to metaphysical naturalism?

    , Article Journal for General Philosophy of Science ; Volume 51, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 185-193 Zargar, Z ; Azadegan, E ; Nabavi, L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It is widely supposed that methodological naturalism, understood as a thesis about the methodology of science, is metaphysically neutral, and that this in turn guarantees the value-neutrality of science. In this paper we argue that methodological naturalism is underpinned by certain ontological and epistemological assumptions including evidentialism and the causal closure of the physical, adoption of which necessitates commitment to metaphysical naturalism. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V

    Abstract
In this paper we introduce a new low phase noise cascode Cross-coupled oscillator by use of the general topology of Cross-coupled oscillator and cascode amplifier. By simulation a comparison between the conventional Cross-coupled oscillator and the new cascode Cross-coupled oscillator is also presented, which shows that the latter improves the phase noise by 2dB under the same conditions. The figure of merit (FOM) of -186.4 dBc/Hz is achieved for the new oscillator by simulation

    Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most aggressive tumor globally, and it can be categorized into two forms: colitis-mediated CRC and sporadic CRC. The therapeutic approaches for CRC encompass surgical intervention, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, even with the implementation of these techniques, the 5-year survival rate for metastatic CRC remains at a mere 12–14%. In the realm of CRC treatment, gene therapy has emerged as a novel therapeutic approach. Among the crucial molecular pathways that govern tumorigenesis, STAT3 plays a significant role. This pathway is subject to regulation by cytokines and growth factors. Once translocated into the nucleus, STAT3 influences the...

Modeling and Estimation of Inertia Parameters of Space Robots

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Nabavi Chashmi, Yaser (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research aims to study the identification of inertia parameters (IPs) of space-robots with the main focus on Active Space-Debris Removal (ASDR) application. In many future space missions, like ASDR, the spacecraft should handle objects (like debris) with unknown IPs. To control and stabilize the spacecraft, it is crucial to identify the dynamic model of the spacecraft in such these missions. On the other hand, uncertainties in the IPs of spacecraft (including space-manipulator) make the identification problem more complex. To overcome the complexities related to mathematical representation of identification equation, a new mathematical tool called Matrix-Set is proposed to develop the...

Impact of void ratio and state parameters on the small strain shear modulus of unsaturated soils

    , Article 15th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ARC 2015: New Innovations and Sustainability ; 2015 , Pages 241-246 Khosravi, A ; Gheibi, A ; Rahimi, M ; McCartney, J. S ; Haeri, S. M
    2015
    Abstract
The unsaturated small strain shear modulus, Gmax, is a key reference value in predicting relationships between dynamic shear modulus and shear strain amplitude and is thus a key quantity to properly model the behavior of dynamically-loaded geotechnical systems such as pavements, rail beds, and machine foundations. From the interpretation of the experimental Gmax results for unsaturated soils, different definitions of trends between Gmax and the stress state of the unsaturated soils and material properties are proposed. However, in most of trends, the relationship between the stress state and void ratio is considered and the effect of void ratio on the unsaturated small strain shear modulus...
