An experimental study on the proper criterion to judge the thermal performance of the nanofluids

    , Article International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 82 , 2017 , Pages 20-28 ; 07351933 (ISSN) Sajedi, R ; Jafari, M ; Nasirivatan, S ; Osanloo, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This work is dedicated to finding a suitable measure to judge thermal performance of nanofluids. The importance of this issue arises from misleading claim of excess heat transfer of nanofluids compared to the base fluid, neglecting the hydraulic effects such as increase in pressure drop. To clarify the issue, the experimental setup with capability to create constant Reynolds number and constant pumping power is constructed. Thermal behavior of nanofluids of silicon oxide/water and aluminum oxide/water and distilled water in developing region of laminar flow regime is investigated. In this regard, the convective heat transfer coefficient within the finned tube heat exchanger is evaluated....

ANN and ANFIS models to predict the performance of solar chimney power plants

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 83 , November , 2015 , Pages 597-607 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Amirkhani, S ; Nasirivatan, S ; Kasaeian, A. B ; Hajinezhad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
A precise model of the behavior of complex systems such as solar chimney power plants (SCPP) would be much beneficial. Also, such a model would be quite contributing to the control of solar chimney operation. In this paper, the identification and modeling of SCPP utilizing ANN and Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) are discussed. The modeling is based on the data of three working days which were taken of a built pilot in University of Zanjan, Iran. The input parameters are time, radiation and ambient temperature, while the output is the air velocity at the inlet of the chimney. The results of ANN model and ANFIS model were compared; it was found that ANFIS model exhibited better...

A comparative study on the performance of HFO-1234yf and HFC-134a as an alternative in automotive air conditioning systems

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 110 , 2017 , Pages 1091-1100 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Daviran, S ; Kasaeian, A ; Golzari, S ; Mahian, O ; Nasirivatan, S ; Wongwises, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, an automotive air conditioning system is simulated by considering HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) as the drop-in replacement of HFC-134a. The simulated air conditioning system consists of a multi-louvered fin and flat-plate type evaporator, a wobble-plate type compressor, a mini-channel parallel-flow type condenser and a thermostatic expansion valve. The thermodynamic properties of the refrigerants are extracted from the REFPROP 8.0 software, and a computer program is simulated for the thermodynamic analysis. Two different conditions have been considered in this program for the cycle analysis: for the first state, the cooling capacity is taken as constant, and for the...

Experimental investigation of the effects of corona wind on the performance of an air-cooled PV/T

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 127 , 2018 , Pages 284-297 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Golzari, S ; Kasaeian, A ; Amidpour, M ; Nasirivatan, S ; Mousavi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present study, enhancing the heat transfer is experimentally investigated by the electro-hydrodynamics (EHD) through a single-pass air-cooled PV/T (Photovoltaic/Thermal System). The corona wind increases the heat transfer coefficient by producing a secondary flow and vortex, and consequently, increases the PV/T system efficiency. The effects of the corona wind are studied by changing the voltage values and the flow rates in the air channel. The results show that the corona wind is effective on enhancing the system performance; so that the heat transfer coefficient increases by 65% in natural flow regime by applying 11 kV voltage in the pilot setup. Totally, the thermal efficiency of...

An experimental comparison of SiO2/water nanofluid heat transfer in square and circular cross-sectional channels

    , Article Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry ; 2017 , Pages 1-10 ; 13886150 (ISSN) Pourfayaz, F ; Sanjarian, N ; Kasaeian, A ; Razi Astaraei, F ; Sameti, M ; Nasirivatan, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2017
    Abstract
In this paper, with the aim of enhancing the thermal conductivity of the fluid, a nanofluid is prepared based on SiO2. A series of experimental tests were carried out for both laminar and forced convection regimes in a horizontal tube with two different geometric shapes (circular and square cross section) subjected to constant wall heat flux (4735 W m−2). A comparative study has been done to investigate the effect of the geometry on the convective heat transfer. Moreover, the effect of the volume concentration on the behavior of the nanofluid and the base fluid was evaluated by comparing various volume concentrations (0.05, 0.07 and 0.2%). The experiments were done under two different...
