, Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Vol. 60, issue , September , 2014 , p. 325-333 ; Nowdeh, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
This paper presents an approach for optimal operation of a grid-connected hybrid system to maximize the system expected generated energy while maximizing the electricity sale revenue. The hybrid system consists of a photovoltaic (PV) module, an electrolyser (EL), hydrogen storage tank (HS) and a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell (FC). The generated energy is sold to the distribution grid. During the grid interruptions, the hybrid system output is used as an emergency supply to serve the local load, hence increasing the supply reliability. The proposed approach splits the whole problem in two sub problems: revenue maximizing problem (RMP) and expected generation maximizing problem...

Abstract
Fast-charging stations are connected to the electric grid and can fully charge an electric vehicle (EV) in less than half an hour. The capacity and location of the charging stations bring the costs to the electric grid operator, as well as to the station owner and EV user. A zonal approach has been proposed in this paper to determine the optimal place and capacity of fast-charging stations. Station development cost and the expected costs incurred by the EV user and the grid operator due to EV charging have also been included in the proposed approach. The geographic characteristics associated with the electric substations, urban roads, and city zones have also been considered in the proposed...

The Application of Hybrid Ventilation to Meet Large Office Building Cooling Demand
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the past due to the lack of mechanical systems for air conditioning in the interior spaces, the buildings were designed to be able to maximize the use of natural forces such as solar and wind power. Natural ventilation is an old method of using natural forces. For example, wind tower is one of the traditional elements for using natural ventilation in the warm seasons for benefiting from wind and sun energy. In our country, Iran, in cities like Yazd, which are located in a warm and dry climate, the use of wind towers is very common and our predecessors were pioneer in this field. With the passage of time and the development of mechanical air conditioning systems, the use of natural...
Optimal Contract Pricing of Distributed Generation in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rajabi-Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
Increase in electricity demands and expansion cost of the power system as well as raising more concerns on environmental issues have led to increasing attraction towards Distributed Generation (DG) application in power systems. DG is generally defined as small generation units, ranging from several KW to several MW, that are installed on the distribution network. In Iran, the energy generated by DG units is purchased by Tavanir or distribution companies through guaranteed fixed-price purchase contract. The contract price imposes substantial effects on the cost and benefit of DG owners as well as those of the distribution company (DisCo). A logical and fair pricing model can provide more...
Allocation of available transfer capability in planning horizon
, Article European Transactions on Electrical Power ; Volume 21, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 1437-1454 ; 1430144X (ISSN) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Feuillet, R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In the United States electricity market standard, when several transmission service requests (TSRs) are made for a specific pair of power injection/extraction points, the independent system operator (ISO) must allocate the available transmission capability (ATC) associated with the pair to the requests. An ATC allocation must determine the amount of accepted requests as well as the priority of the accepted requests during emergencies. The requests could have different types (recallable/non-recallable), tariffs, and time frames and these factors must be properly considered in ATC allocation. This paper proposes a method for optimal ATC allocation in the planning horizon which incorporates the...

Abstract
For a power transfer path, total transfer capability (TTC) represents maximum power that can be transferred over the transmission system. Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is a device that can be used to increase in TTC. This study presents a new method for optimal UPFC application to minimise power loss while enhancing TTC. Based on UPFC injection model, the solution region of UPFC parameters is first found using the proposed method to maximise TTC. It then searches the solution region to find optimal UPFC control mode and setting to minimise system power loss. The proposed method is applied to the IEEE-Reliability Test System and the UPFC application impact are evaluated. Comparative...

Abstract
When there are transmission service requests for a specific sink/source pair in a transmission system, the ISO must allocate the ATC of that pair to the requests. Since the requests could have different types, tariffs and time frame, the allocation must be accomplished in a sound and fair manner that considers various aspects of the requests. This paper proposes an approach to allocate the ATC to transmission service requests in both operating and planning horizons. The proposed method considers types and tariffs of requests in a nonlinear optimization which maximizes the expected net revenue of ATC allocation. The solution to the optimization problem gives the amount of accepted requests....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sabouhi, Yadollah (Supervisor) ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
By increasing the penetration of distributed generation (DG) technologies such as photovoltaiec, μCHP etc, power generation system is moving from a centralized network to a distributed scheme with different generation units at lower level of voltage. This trend will provide the opportunity for cosumers to make decision when and which source of energy to use, due to the owner’s objectives. Here, to investigate these aspects, we use the energy hub framework, considering different energy carrier networks, DGs and storage devices. In this thesis, we model and simulate an energy system containing three interconnected energy hubs, which serve as interface between suppliers and consummers. In an...
Use of Thermal Storage for Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the issues that today is considered by planners and system operators in power systems, especially the Iranian power grid, is the high variation and the lack of uniformity of load curves in different hours of the day. This has led to the use of all installed capacity of the country's production only in peak hours, and in the low and intermediate times, a large amount of installed capacity is out of the circuit, which means Unused capital. This problem is more or less seen in world power networks with high load variation curves. Also, the production of renewable energies has always been fluctuating, and the production of power control to improve this fluctuation is very important. This...

Abstract
This paper introduces a novel multiobjective approach for capacity benefit margin (CBM) assessment taking into account tie-line reliability of interconnected systems. CBM is the imperative information utilized as a reference by the load-serving entities (LSE) to estimate a certain margin of transfer capability so that a reliable access to generation through interconnected system could be attained. A new Pareto-based evolutionary programming (EP) technique is used to perform a simultaneous determination of CBM for all areas of the interconnected system. The selection of CBM at the Pareto optimal front is proposed to be performed by referring to a heuristic ranking index that takes into...
