    Abstract
Nowadays anaerobic treatment of wastewater has been gaining more and more popularity. This process is usually used for waste sludge and wastewater with high concentrations of organic pollutants. One bioreactor that uses the anaerobic process to treat wastewater is the Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR). This reactor was studied in the present study. The Anaerobic Baffled Reactor is composed of a series of up flow anaerobic sludge reactors. A simple design, low process cost, low sludge production and the lack of a need for a separator of the gas and sludge are some of the important characteristics of this reactor. Furthermore, ABRs are resistant against temperature and pH and can separate...

Circuit Level Techniques for Soft Error Mitigation in Combinational and Sequential Parts in Nano-scale CMOS Technology

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rajaei, Ramin (Author) ; Tabandeh, Mahmoud (Supervisor) ; Fazeli, Mahdi (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
CMOS technology has reached two digit nanometer dimensions. This scaling trend improves performance and power consumption on the one hand, and reduces noise margin and circuits reliability on the other. Along with downscaling, sensitivity to radiation induced soft errors is increasing. As CMOS dimensions are shrinking, node capacitance of circuits become smaller. Consequently, particles with smaller charge could induce parasitic voltages in some nodes and result in soft errors. There are more particles with smaller charge than the ones with larger. Therefore, soft error rate is rapidly increasing with technology advances. Single Event Multiple Effects (SEMEs) is a new challenge emerged in...

Analysis of Circular Slot Antenna on a Ferrite Substrate

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heydari, Mohammad Bagher (Author) ; Rajaei, Behzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Circular polarization (CP) is one of the common polarization types used in wireless systems for frequency identification (RFID), global positioning (GPS) and wireless local area networks (WLAN), since it can provide greater flexibility in orientation angle between transmitter and receiver, and better mobility and weather penetration than the linearly polarized antennas. Magnetic permeability in ferrites can be tuned by external magnetic field ; So ferrites can be good candidates for new reconfigurable CP antenna technology. In this project, we will consider circularly polarized slot antenna with a wide axial ratio beamwidth that consists of a normally magnetized ferrite substrate mounted...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajaei, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used in this study to investigate single and multi phase flow behavior related to three stages of ESP pump. Compared to experimental measurements, the numerical prediction for single phase flow of water is matched very well. Furthermore, the effects of viscosity and pump rotational speed for oil were investigated and the results show that by increasing oil viscosity and decreasing rotational speed, the pump head and efficiency reduced. ESP performance under two phase oil-methane flow and the effect of oil viscosity, rotational speed, intake pressure, gas bubble diameter, oil rate and gas volume fraction were studied. ESP boosting...

Using the Echo of Rotating Parts to Recognize a Radar Target

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Johari, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Nayebi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Target recognition techniques based on micro Doppler phenomenon are popular because they are applicable even on low resolution radars, in contrast to other techniques such as High Resolution Range Profile (HRRP) which need high resolution in range or angle. Usually, main purpose of such techniques is generating robust features against target initial state, velocity, aspect angle, etc. rather than features which exactly identify a target. Main approaches in the literature are based on time-frequency transforms (TFT) such as spectrogram in order to generate features to classify targets, but in this thesis, we propose a totally different method using Recurrence Plot for generating features...

Elimination of Blocker Signals in Radio Receivers Using Time-Varying Circuits

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajaei Rizi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Fotowat Ahmadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to increasingly utilization of different frequency spots, RF receivers are allways under the threats of compression and desensitization because of large out-of-band or in-band blockers. The IC technologies afford fast, low-resistance switches as scaling keeps going on. With this mind, the Linear Periodic Time Varying circuits, in which the switches play the most dominant role, will be a sensible candidate for the concerns of blocker detection and rejection. Furthermore, nowadays’ receivers should be reconfigureable so as to be tunable at different frequency bands and satisfy contrastive standards. In this regard, the LPTV filters provide vast range of tunablity not only with...

Positivity Bounds on Effective Field Theories: Galileon Theories as a Case Study

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalali, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Torabian, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Effective field theory is a practical method for model building and explaining experimental/observational data. These theories are constructed based on knowing low energy degrees of freedom and symmetries (accidental or fundamental). By construction, these theories are applicable up to a cut-off scale and their predictions beyond that are not reliable. For applications to higher energies a UV completion is needed through which modifications are applied or new heavy degrees of freedom are introduced. In order to complete a theory in a Wilsonian approach, scattering amplitudes must satisfy some constraints. These constraints are derived from basic assumptions like Lorentz invariance,...

Design and Implementation of Proton Precession Magnetometer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kamrani, Mohammad Hamed (Author) ; Fardmanesh, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Proton precession magnetometers are one of the most sensitive scalar magnetic sensors. Their function is based on Zeeman effect and also nuclear magnetic resonance phenomena. In this project we have designed and implemented needed coils, swithching and signal detection circuits. Because of extremely high sensitivity of this sensor to induced noises and also gradient of earth’s magnetic fileld, detection of precession signal needs design of low noise electronic circuits with special EMC considerations. The implemented system in this project contains different blocks, such as switching circuit and its related control unit, amplifier, filter and frequency meter. Using this system, the obtained...

Numerical Study of Pile Behavior under Seismic Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mashinchian, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Numerous structures which are involved in seismic soil-pile-structure interaction have been destroyed. Considering complexities which exist in soil-pile interaction problems and lack of precise methods without imperfect bases, it is necessary to use numerical methods for analyzing soil-pile interaction problems. In this research, three-dimensional modeling and studying the effect of changing soil and pile parameters on the behavior of pile under earthquake loading is performed using finite difference software, FLAC3D. The soil in this model has a softening behavior. Real earthquake spectrum has been applied into the model as the acceleration time history at the bedrock level. The results of...

Power Integral basis in Algebraic Number Fields whose Galois Groups are 2-Elementery Abelian

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahboubimatin, Mahdi (Author) ; Pournaki, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Rajaei, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
LetK be a biquadratic field. M.-N. Gras and F. Tanoe gave a necessary and sufficient condition that K is monogenic by using a diophantine equation of degree 4 [13]. We consider algebraic extension fields of higher degree. Let F be a Galois extension field over the rationals Q whose Galois group is 2-elementary Abelian. then we shall prove that F of degree graeter than 8, is monogenic if and only if F being field of n'th primitive root of unity under a suitable condition for the case of degree 8

The Number of Representations of an Integer by a Quadratic Form

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khajehpour, Davood (Author) ; Pournaki, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Rajaei, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this paper Alexander Berkovich and Hamza Yesilyurt revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding the representation of integers by binary quadratic form x2 + 5y2. Making use of Ramanujan’s 1 1 summation formula, they establish a new Lambert series identity for Σ1 n;m=1 qn2+5m2 . Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But they do not stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan’s notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity, they obtain a collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x2+6y2, 2x2+3y2, x2+15y2, 3x2+5y2, x2+27y2, x2+5(y2+z2+w2), 5x2+y2+z2+w2. In the process, they...

Numerical Modeling of the Bearing Capacity of Suction Caisson by Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hejazian, Maryam (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Suction caisson is a relatively new technology which was introduced about 30 years ago for the first time and after several investigations, was found its position in the oil industry and construction of anchorages, during previous decade. So nowadays, it is the most effective and economical choice as the mooring of offshore structures in comparison with the other foundations. Suction caisson is a hollow cylinder with an open bottom and a closed top. After placement on the seafloor, the caisson first penetrates into the soil by its self weight and then inserts into the ground by pumping water out of it. Although many researchers have attempted to understand the behavior of suction caissons...

Application of Adaptive Neural Network Systems in Controller Design of Nonlinear Processes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talkhoncheh, Mahdi Khajeh (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project design of adaptive neural network controller for uncertain nonlinear systems in the presence of different restrictions has been investigated. After providing introduction and motivation, two general forms of nonlinear systems including strict- feedback and pure- feedback have been introduced. In order to solve the problem caused by each restriction, a solution has been proposed. For the strict- feedback nonlinear systems several restrictions are considered such as, unknown dynamic model, unmeasured state, input saturation, unknown control directions, time delays in states and input. Stability analysis based on the Lyapunov theorem has been established. In addition, two kinds...

    Fully Homomorphic Encryption Implementation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heydarian, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Shabany, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
After being introduced in 2009, the first fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) scheme has created significant excitement in academia and industry. Despite rapid advances in the last 6 years, FHE schemes are still not ready for deployment due to an efficiency bottleneck. Here we introduce a hardware/software codesign, in fact a hardware accelerator optimized for a class of reconfigurable logic to bring homomorphic encryption schemes one step closer to deployment in real-life applications. The accelerator we present is connected via a fast PCIe interface to a CPU platform to provide homomorphic evaluation services to any application that needs to support blinde computations. Specifically we...
