    Abstract
Infill materials in rock joints usually cause a reduction in the joint shear strength. The shear behavior of rock discontinuities depends upon whether they are clean and unfilled or filled, so this concern invites accurate understanding of the shear behavior and strength of infilled joints. A series of constant normal load direct shear tests was performed to investigate the shear strength of artificial samples with infilled rough joint surfaces having different asperity and infill characteristics. The current study focuses on the effects of factors that influence the shear strength of infilled rock joints samples, with emphasis on forward and reverse shearing. In the forward cycle, the front...

Numerical investigation and field monitoring of karun bridge abutment

    , Article 33rd CSCE Annual Conference 2005, Toronto, ON, 2 June 2005 through 4 June 2005 ; Volume 2005 , 2005 , Pages GC-253-1-GC-253-8 ; 1894662091 (ISBN); 9781894662093 (ISBN) Bayat, A ; Sadaghiani, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Karun Bridge is part of a national highway project underway in southern Iran. The bridge is a 336 m steel arch structure that weighs more than 2500 tons and crosses the Karun River 270 meters above the river valley. The bridge will be the largest suspended bridge in the Middle East. Cantilever construction is to be used to construct the bridge from both sides simultaneously. The weight of the bridge is to be carried by two abutments and four piers that are anchored to exposed weathered rock mass. Loads on the abutments and piers include significant cantilever loads and moments during bridge erection and wind loads. Daily rapid temperature changes also will impart significant thermal loads on...

Numerical modeling of ground settlement control of large span underground metro station in Tehran Metro using Central Beam Column (CBC) structure

    , Article Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology ; Volume 28, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 1-9 ; 08867798 (ISSN) Valizadeh Kivi, A ; Sadaghiani, M. H ; Ahmadi, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The ground surface settlement caused by underground excavation is an important matter in urban development. The settlement control of large span underground station in Tehran Metro is investigated using a full three-dimensional (3-D) finite element analysis. A method of underground construction by increasing the rigidity of the supporting system using Central Beam Column (CBC) structure is introduced. In construction of large underground space, effect of presence of CBC structure is compared to a case without CBC structure. The CBC structure increases the rigidity of supports and decrease the stress concentration and displacement in supporting system. It generally decreases the soil...

Assessing the shear behavior of oriented rock joints under constant normal loading conditions

    Abstract
This paper presents results from a series of constant normal load direct shear tests on artificially created rock joints, in an attempt to quantify the effects of different factors that contribute to the shear strength along "ideal" rock joints. Particular focus is given to the effect of asperity orientation with respect to the direction of shearing. In many historical rock joint shear strength criteria, the effect of a joint's roughness on the joint shear strength is described based on analysis of only a single profile in the direction of shearing. More recent studies have observed that the distribution of sheared area on a joint surface during shear is significantly affected by the...

3D numerical investigation of the effects of driving of the new mechanized tunnel on existing segmental linings and ground surface settlements - a case study: Shiraz metro line 2

    , Article International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering ; 2020 Pirastehfar, K ; Shivaei, S ; Sadaghiani, M. H ; Nikooee, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Subway metro systems are one of the most efficient modes of mass transportation, especially in heavily populated areas. A series of 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been carried out to investigate the interaction between mechanized twin tunnels excavated beneath the highly congested streets of Shiraz (Iran). Firstly, the reference numerical model has been verified using the measured data of surface settlement control pins. The effects of driving of the new closed shield tunnel on the evolution of stress fields in the existing segmental lining as well as the ground surface settlements in the reference numerical model have been then quantified. Lastly, the effects of influencing factors...

Effect of the shear loading direction on shear behavior of rock and finding new empirical method for determining JRC by fractal dimension

    Abstract
Effect of different conditions on shear behaviour of rock has been investigated by various researchers. As known, in larger scale the continuity of the rock material is interrupted by separated planes such as bedding planes, faults, shear zones, closure and the behaviour converts to be inelastic and anisotropic. Generally, discontinuities appear repeatedly in more than one preferential direction, creating a three dimensional structure, reducing its stiffness and shear strength as mechanical effects and increasing its transport velocity associated with discontinuity flow as hydraulic effects. They also make rock behavior more complex and different compared to the behavior of soil. According...

Rock joint modeling using a visco-plastic multilaminate model at constant normal load condition

    Abstract
Rock joints play an important role in the behavior of rock masses under normal and shear loading conditions. Numerical simulation of the behavior of jointed rock masses is not an easy task due to complexities involved in the problem such as joint roughness, joint shear strength, hardening and softening phenomenon and mesh dependency. In this study for modeling purposes, a visco-plastic multilaminate model considering hardening and softening effects has been employed. For providing the necessary data for numerical simulation, a series of laboratory experiments have been carried out on regular tooth-shape asperities made by gypsum, under constant normal load conditions. Shear stress-shear...
