Extreme Positive Daily Returns in Tehran Stock Exchange

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mashadi, Saeid (Author) ; Talebian, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Seif, Mostafa (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Bali, Cakici, and Whitelaw (2011) have shown that U.S. stocks with extreme positive daily returns in a month will underperform in the next month. Following Bali et al. (2011), a number of researchers have tried to explain the main causes of this anomaly, also referred to as the “MAX Effect”. The MAX effect is often believed to be the result of investor sentiment and overreaction in financial markets. Bali et al. (2011) argue that the classical asset pricing models are unable to explain the cause of MAX effect. Studies have shown that the MAX effect is also prevalent in other stock markets around the world. Some researchers have performed similar analysis to Bali et al.’s (2011) and have...

Detecting Momentum in the Return Time Series of Currency Market Equally-Weighted and Min-Variance Portfolios

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Ali (Author) ; Talebian, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Seif, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Portfolio-based investment strategies in the currency market, unlike the stock market, have not been well-investigated as the scientific papers mostly focus on more popular investment strategies like carry trade, momentum, and technical analysis. Our main aim is to evaluate the performance of two well-known portfolio selection techniques, i.e. equally-weighted and minimum variance portfolios, in the currency market and to improve the performance, based on the characteristics of the return time series of each method. To improve the performance of the portfolios, we check for the presence of momentum in the return time series. Our findings show both portfolios do not yield abnormal returns...

    Planing Hull Longitudinal Motion Simulation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seif, Tayyebe (Author) ; Seif, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Planing crafts in waves are characterized by large and violent vertical motion and acceleration. The hull structure is subjected to high impact loads and the crew experiences high transient vertical acceleration and in most cases the crew needs to lower speed in order to avoid damage to the hull.In recent years, interest on increasingly faster marine vehicles has remarkably grown. Typical planing monohulls are: patrol vessels, pilot boats, rescue vessels, coast guard vessels and small navy vessels. So the behavior of planing monohulls in waves has been a widely researched topic since more and more planing monohulls appeared. The accurate prediction of large amplitude ship motions in severe...

Review of Thermalization in Closed Quantum Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seif, Negar (Author) ; Rezakhani, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
For a physical system, equilibrium is defined as a state in which the values of macroscopic quantities describing the system do not change in time. We observe systems around us reaching equilibrium every day. Describing such a seemingly simple phenomena has remained as one of the important challenges in theoretical physics. So far, various explanations for thermalization (approach to equilibrium) have been offered within classical and quantum thermodynamics. In classical statistical mechanics, the microcanonical ensemble provides a suitable prediction of the thermal behavior of a closed system. In this ensemble, using ergodic hypothesis and chaos theory one can assume that all microstates...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alimoradi, Farid (Author) ; Mostafavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Water is crucial to human being. We use water for a wide variety of uses daily. However, leakage has caused substantial water loss to our precious processed water. The major contributor to non-revenue water in Iran is pipeline leakages. The water industry in the nation has invested in equipment to detect and localize leaks in water distribution systems. One of the equipment mentioned is acoustic-based. The principle of acoustic is that whenever a leak is present in a pipeline, noise is generated and will travel along the pipeline. The acoustic leak detection method is then derived by calculating the distance traveled by this noise generated by the leak. Different equipment based on acoustic...

Social Reality in John Searle: Do Institutional Facts have Physical Realization?

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahari, Amin (Author) ; Taqavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the extension of his former developments of the theories of philosophy of mind and language, John Searle (1932- ) proceeded into the realm of social reality by his The Construction of Social Reality and Making the Social World, written in 1995 and 2010 respectively. With his naturalistic background, he placed his new theory on top of his former theories of mind and language already naturalized and fully worked out. As we will see, social reality comes with our three marvelous capacities, not coming together, to the extent we know, in animals other than us: collective intentionality, assignment of function, and language; all of them already being treated by Searle, in a naturalized manner,...

Modification in Topology and Control Method for Improving Performance of Modular Multilevel Converter in 2N+1 and N+1 Modulation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razani, Ramin (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In Modular Multilevel converter, it is necessary to attain different objectives simultaneously. One of the most effective control methods which can cope with this kind of systems is the Model Predictive Control (MPC). This method predicts the values of control objectives based on different feasible states and determines the optimal one using cost functions. The number of feasible states can increase when the number of switches increases in the converter. This makes the MPC unable to be applied in the MMCs with hundereds of submodules (SMs) in each arm because of its heavy computational burden. In this thesis, a modified model predictive control is proposed to reduce the computational burden....
