, Article MSWiM'12 - Proceedings of the 15th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems ; 2012 , Pages 403-407 ; 9781450316286 (ISBN) Enayati Noabadi, E ; Yousefi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Network Coding (NC) is an emerging technique that helps wireless networks to have higher throughput and better energy efficiency. In this paper, a novel network coding-aware routing (S-NC) which uses NC to improve reliability and robustness in unreliable WSNs is proposed. It is based on a structure-free routing algorithm as the underlying routing engine which employs neighbor queue length to increase coding opportunity; while exploiting a spatial coding method to control the amount of redundancy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the topic of network codingaware routing in Wsns. Simulation results in Tossim demonstrate that S-NC significantly improves the performance...

DACA: Data-aware clustering and aggregation in query-driven wireless sensor networks

    , Article 2012 21st International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks, ICCCN 2012 - Proceedings ; 2012 ; 9781467315449 (ISBN) Bahrami, S ; Yousefi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Data aggregation is an effective technique which is introduced to conserve energy by reducing packet transmissions in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In addition, it is possible to consume less energy by using the spatial correlation and redundancy of data in dense networks to form clusters of nodes sensing similar values and, in turn, transmit one data packet per cluster. In this paper, we propose a Data-Aware Clustering and Aggregation scheme (DACA) to manage the energy constraint in a query-driven WSN. The DACA selects cluster head nodes by forming a new factor as a function of three parameters including the residual energy, the data value, and the number of neighbors at each node....

An efficient distributed cluster-head election technique for load balancing in wireless sensor network

, Article Proceedings of the 2010 6th International Conference on Intelligent Sensors, Sensor Networks and Information Processing, ISSNIP 2010, 7 December 2010 through 10 December 2010, Brisbane, QLD ; 2010 , Pages 227-232 ; 9781424471768 (ISBN) Afkhami Goli, S ; Yousefi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Energy constraint is the most critical problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To address this issue, clustering has been introduced as an efficient way for routing. However, the available clustering algorithms do not efficiently consider the geographical information of nodes in cluster-head election. This leads to uneven distribution of cluster-heads and unbalanced cluster sizes that brings about uneven energy dissipation in clusters. In this paper, an Efficient Distributed Cluster-head Election technique for Load balancing (EDCEL) is proposed. The main criterion of the algorithm, dispersal of cluster-heads, is achieved by increasing the Euclidian distance between cluster-heads....

Multi criteria site selection model for wind-compressed air energy storage power plants in Iran

    , Article Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews ; Vol. 32 , April , 2014 , pp. 579-590 ; ISSN: 13640321 Satkin, M ; Noorollahi, Y ; Abbaspour, M ; Yousefi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this research, a site selection method for wind-compressed air energy storage (wind-CAES) power plants was developed and Iran was selected as a case study for modeling. The parameters delineated criteria for potential wind development localities for wind-CAES power plant sites. One important consequence of this research was the identification of the wind energy potential for wind-CAES sites. The theoretical wind energy potential of Iran of greater than 50 W/m2 was identified from a wind atlas of Iran. The model produced factor maps by considering the boundary conditions of the input data and created geo-databases from the outputs maps. The main factor maps were electrical grids and...

Interference-aware multipath routing for video delivery in wireless multimedia sensor networks

    , Article Proceedings - 32nd IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems Workshops, ICDCSW 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 216-221 Nikseresht, I ; Yousefi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Khansari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Multiple paths are mainly used in order to achieve higher throughput and reduce the end-to-end delivery latency as well. However, the overall network performance greatly suffers from the available interference between paths, even if node disjoint multipaths are used. This problem is highlighted more when dealing with transmission of the video data where the timeliness is of primary concern. In this paper, we propose a novel Interference-Aware Multipath routing for Video Delivery (IAMVD) in the realm of wireless multimedia sensor networks. It constructs multiple paths while considering the effect of different QoS requirements of multi-priority packets, without needing any hardware support for...

    Abstract
Data aggregation is an effective technique which is introduced to save energy by reducing packet transmissions in WSNs. However, it extends the delay at the intermediate nodes, so it can complicate the handling of delayconstrained data in event-critical applications. Besides, the structure-based aggregation as the dominant data gathering approach in WSNs suffers from high maintenance overhead in dynamic scenarios for event-based applications. In this paper, to make aggregation more efficient, we design a novel structure-free Real-time Data AGgregation protocol, RDAG, using a Real-time Data-aware Routing policy and a Judiciously Waiting policy for spatial and temporal convergence of packets....

IMAC: An Interference-aware duty-cycle MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks employing multipath routing

    , Article Proceedings - 2011 IFIP 9th International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing, EUC 2011 ; 2011 , Pages 288-293 ; 9780769545523 (ISBN) Eskandari, L ; Yousefi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Khansari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The main source of energy consumption in the current MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks is idle listening. To mitigate this problem, duty cycling is used. However, it increases data delivery latency. In this paper, we propose an Interference-aware duty-cycle MAC (IMAC) protocol for wireless sensor networks that uses cross-layer information to reserve multiple paths for each source and send data packets along them efficiently. IMAC also handles the existing interference between these paths such that data packets can be delivered in the minimum required number of cycles. Simulation results in ns-2 show that the proposed algorithm has an average reduction of 49% in data delivery latency...

    Abstract
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) should be capable of fulfilling its mission, in a timely manner and without loss of important information. In this paper, we propose a new analytical model for calculating RRT (Reliable Real-Time) degree in multihop WSNs, where RRT degree describes the percentage of real-time data that the network can reliably deliver on time from any source to its destination. Also, packet loss probability is modeled as a function of the probability of link failure when the buffer is full and the probability of node failure when node's energy is depleted. Most of the network properties are considered as random variables and a queuing theory based model is derived. In this...

Numerical investigations of fluid flow and lateral fluid dispersion in bounded granular beds in a cylindrical coordinates system

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 30, Issue 10 , 2007 , Pages 1369-1375 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Soleymani, A ; Turunen, I ; Yousefi, H ; Bastani, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Results are presented from a numerical study examining the flow of a viscous, incompressible fluid through a random packing of non-overlapping spheres at moderate Reynolds numbers, spanning a wide range of flow conditions for porous media. By using a laminar model including inertial terms and assuming rough walls, numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in three-dimensional porous packed beds resulted in dimensionless pressure drops in excellent agreement with those reported in a previous study. This observation suggests that no transition to turbulence could occur in the range of the Reynolds number studied. For flows in the Forchheimer regime, numerical results are presented of...

    Abstract
Data aggregation is a key, yet time-consuming functionality in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Multi-channel design is a promising technique to alleviate interference as a primary reason for long latency of TDMA aggregation scheduling. Indeed, it provides more potential of parallel transmissions over different frequency channels, thus minimizing time latency. In this paper, we focus on designing a multi-channel minimum latency aggregation scheduling protocol, named MC-MLAS, using a new joint approach for tree construction, channel assignment, and transmission scheduling. To our best knowledge, this is the first work in the literature which combines orthogonal channels and partially...

Maximizing quality of aggregation in delay-constrained wireless sensor networks

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 17, Issue 11 , 2013 , Pages 2084-2087 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Alinia, B ; Yousefi, H ; Talebi, M. S ; Khonsari, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this letter, both the number of participating nodes and spatial dispersion are incorporated to establish a bi-objective optimization problem for maximizing the quality of aggregation under interference and delay constraints in tree-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The formulated problem is proved to be NP-hard with respect to Weighted-sum scalarization and a distributed heuristic aggregation scheduling algorithm, named SDMAX, is proposed. Simulation results show that SDMAX not only gives a close approximation of the Pareto-optimal solution, but also outperforms the best, to our knowledge, existing alternative proposed so far in the literature

FOMA: Flexible overlay multi-path data aggregation in wireless sensor networks

    Abstract
Data aggregation is an efficient method to conserve energy by reducing packet transmissions in WSNs. However, providing end-to-end data reliability is a major challenge when the network uses data aggregation. In this case, a packet loss can miss a complete subtree of values, thus greatly affecting the final results. Data transmission in multiple paths can tolerate this problem, but it may incur some computation errors for duplicate-sensitive aggregates. In this paper, we propose a Flexible Overlay Multi-path data Aggregation protocol (FOMA) which uses the available path redundancy to deliver a correct aggregate result to the sink with high reliability in an energy-efficient manner. It...

    Abstract
Lifetime is the mos important concern in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) due to limited battery power of sensor nodes. Moreover, a WSN should be capable of timely fulfilling its mission without losing important information in event-critical applications. In this paper, we focus on designing an energy-efficient and energy-aware real-time routing algorithm aiming to explore the long lifetime routing schemes in which delay constraint is satisfied in the presence of lossy communication links. To achieve this goal, our energy-aware forwarding protocol utilizes an optimum distance real-time routing algorithm to minimize energy consumption in unreliable WSNs. Simulation results reveal that the...

    Abstract
Minimizing energy consumption is the most important concern in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To achieve this, clustering and prediction methods can enjoy the inherent redundancy of raw data and reduce transmissions more effectively. In this paper, we focus on designing a prediction-based approach, named PDC, to mainly contribute in data-aware clustering. It exploits both spatial and temporal correlations to form highly stable clusters of nodes sensing similar values. Here, the sink node uses only the local prediction models of cluster heads to forecast all readings in the network without direct communication. To the best of our knowledge, PDC is a novel energy efficient approach which...

    Abstract
Limited energy in each node is the major design constraint in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To overcome this limit, wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs) have been proposed and studied extensively over the last few years. In a typical WRSN, batteries in sensor nodes can be replenished by a mobile charger that periodically travels along a certain trajectory in the sensing area. To maximize the charged energy in sensor nodes, one fundamental question is how to control the traveling velocity of the charger. In this paper, we first identify the optimal velocity control as a key design objective of mobile wireless charging in WRSNs. We then formulate the optimal charger velocity...
