    Abstract
In transportation literature, User Equilibrium (UE) has been widely studied since early 1950's, many studies of which define equilibrium flow of traffic for uncapacitated networks based on Wardrop's first principle, implying also a Nash Equilibrium (NE). Although, in general, the two equilibria (UE and NE) are not explicitly the same, they are shown to be equivalent under special conditions for uncapacitated UE, when volume delay functions are separable, continuous, non-decreasing and non-negative. A good deal of research is devoted to explain UE in capacitated networks based on Wardrop's first principle and the concept of generalized costs. However, UE for capacitated networks, even under...

    Abstract
The toll pricing problem has been investigated in the literature for the cases of link, cordon, and facility (bridge, tunnel and etc.) pricing. Taking advantages of new technologies, nowadays it is possible to track the path of individual vehicles and collect the tolls by means of electronic devices. In this regard, we concerned the problem of path pricing. In this thesis, a variety of models for path pricing is proposed, the models are solved for the Hearn network and the results are compared to the results of link pricing models. In addition to the models, one exact solution method and two heuristic methods are proposed for the model of path pricing with the minimum total toll....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moshtagh, Vahid (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, traffic assignment problem with side constraints has been considered because of the importance of transportation supply management. Side constraints which are appeared due to imposing the traffic control policies are usually represented in form of link, node or district capacity constraints. Although link capacity constraint has been extensively studied, only a few papers on the other types of constraints such as capacity constraint on inflow to a district of city exist in the literature. In this research a method based on dynamic penalty function (DPF) is presented to solve traffic assignment problem with side constraints. Solution algorithm has been coded in a programming...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farivar, Saeedeh (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Discrete network design problem is selecting a set of feasible projects among a set of candidate projects, considering a budget constraint in which user's cost is being minimized. Network design problem is one of the complicated problems in transportation science, since it is a bi-level problem in which the lower level is a traffic assignment problem and the upper level is finding the best set of arcs. Meta-heuristic algorithms can be used to solve this problem. Although, there is no guarantee to find the optimal solution by Meta-heuristic algorithms, but they find good solutions in short times. The purpose of this study is comparing the efficiency of three Meta-heuristic algorithms for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mollanejad, Mostafa (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Improving synchronization in a bus network has a profound effect on reducung waiting times and increasing satisfaction of system’s users. By doing so, the scheduler create a more attractive transit system that generates the opportunity for increasing the number of riders. In this research, the problem of creating timetables with maximum synchronization is modeled as a mixed integer programing (MIP) problem. The objective of this model is to minimize the total waiting times of passengers at transfer nodes. For this purpose, the model take advantage of uneven headways. Some of features that distinguish this research are more realistic objective function, and considering adjacent departures...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zokaie Kheiraie, Ali (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Control and managing of fuel consumption is one of the most important issues facing man kind today. Locating gas stations has a great effect on fuel consumption. The gas station locating problem consists of selecting the optimal choice between the candidate nodes for constructing gas stations in such a way that minimizes the excess travel time that results from the gas station not being located on daily travel paths. The gas station locating model is presented for two conditions of either considering and not considering the gas station capacity. In the case of not considering the gas station capacity, a compact model is presented, too. Softwares for medium sized networks and the Simulated...

Applying Signal Coordination in Dynamic Traffic Assignment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talebpour, Ali Reza (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Signal Coordination is one of the appropriate methods for delay reduction in intersections. Static Traffic Assignment is unable to reflect the impacts of Signal Coordination in a network. One proper way to overcome this difficulty is to use Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) that can model complex properties of traffic flow. This thesis presents a method to apply Signal Coordination in Cell Transmission Model. Neguin network is tested for different intersection's green start times. The results show that Signal Coordination has great influence on total travel time and route choice in this network. Finally, the results have been checked with AIMSUN NG, a microsimulator software.

A Trip-Chain Based Traffic Assignment Model of Electric Vehicles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tarighati Tabesh, Mahmood (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of this research is to solve the traffic assignment of electric vehicles with considering trip chains. Limited driving range of electric vehicles is considered as one the most important obstacles for the development of these cars. The worry that the battery will run out of power before the destination is an important issue regarding the electric cars and people usually experience it more in trip chains. In this research, a complementary model and a linearization method is used for traffic assignment. In determining shortest paths in the traffic assignment, in addition to considering the travel time and the distance limit, the constraint of passing through activity nodes is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arbabi Bidgoli, Mohammad (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The trip demand information in the form of the origin-destination (OD) matrix is of significant importance in the transportation studies. Obtaining such a matrix by conventional methods requires a considerable amount of time, cost, and human resources. Traffic count and cellphone network data are two relatively inexpensive data that can be used for estimation of OD matrices as well as correction of prior matrices. The trip demand estimation problem is a bi-level model, and the gradient algorithm is one way to solve it. This study, by generalizing the gradient algorithm, attempts to a better use of the available data. In this algorithm, a complementary algorithm is used to solve the traffic...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abedi, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Zokaei Aashtiani, Hedayat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, with the advent of Autonomous Vehicles(AV), Researchers in different areas focused more on this type of vehicle. Research shows that autonomous vehicles are faster and more precise than Human-driven vehicles(HDV). So if all the users in a road use autonomous Vehicles, the road’s capacity increases; this Thesis develops a mathematical approach for designing AV exclusive lanes for a time horizon in which there are two types of AVs and HDVs on the road. Considering each type of vehicle’s relative performance for an OD pair in the given year, the demand for that OD pair for the next year calculates with a diffusion model. Designing AV exclusive lanes problem is formulated in a bi-level...

    , Article Transportation Research Record ; Issue 1817 , 2002 , Pages 88-92 ; 03611981 (ISSN) Aashtiani, H. Z ; Iravani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    National Research Council  2002
    Abstract
The transit assignment process applied as part of the development of the Tehran transportation model is described. The process includes development of various models Tor dwell time as a function of transit volume. Dwell time is the time a transit vehicle spends at a stop to allow passengers to alight and board. This method was implemented by using EMME/2 transportation planning software. The calculation of dwell time is necessary in modeling transit assignment because an accurate estimation of dwell time will lead to more precise transit assignment results. The area analyzed in the model comprises various transportation analysis zones in the city of Tehran. The model output was shown to be...

    Abstract
Braess' phenomenon, also known as Braess' paradox, is a phenomenon that has received considerable attention in transportation engineering and planning, as well as in other fields. It has an important implication in the area of investment in transportation networks, namely that adding a new link in a network may increase the cost to the users of that network. In this paper we show this phenomenon in a new environment. Unlike traditional examples, which involve the physical addition of a link to a network (a 0/1 integer decision variable), an example is presented where the decision variable is continuous in nature. Moreover, this example conveys two new messages. First, it is shown that some...

    Abstract
The trip demand information in the form of the origin-destination (OD) matrix is an essential input to the transportation studies. Obtaining such a matrix by conventional methods needs considerable amount of time, cost, and manpower. Since obtaining traffic volume data for the links of the transportation network is easy, recently many researchers have tried to obtain trip demand matrix by using this information. Among them, Spiess introduced the gradient method which is applicable for real large scale networks. The gradient method is an iterative procedure which starts from an initial O-D matrix and at each iteration tries to reach a matrix which generates flows closer to the observed flows...

School bus routing problem in large-scale networks

    , Article Transportation Research Record ; Issue 2137 , 2009 , Pages 140-147 ; 03611981 (ISSN) Rashidi, T ; Zokaei Aashtiani, H ; Mohammadian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The vehicle routing problem (VRP) is one of the most complicated optimization mathematical models; the school bus routing problem (SBRP) is an important and practical branch of this problem. Because the number of variables and equations is vast, finding the exact solution for this problem under real conditions is difficult; only heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms can be used to solve it. Recently, the ejection chain method (ECM) has been introduced as a heuristic algorithm that efficiently finds a new neighbor solution. In a case study in developing countries, efficiency of several heuristic algorithms including ECM along with one metaheuristic algorithm-tabu search algorithm (TSA)-is...

    Abstract
Improving the service quality of the public transport systems has always been an interesting research area in the field of transportation planning. Public transit system expansion and enhancement has been known as a recognized way to improve congested metropolitan areas. In order to make a transit system more attractive to people, both long and short term management strategies should be considered. Fleet re-assignment to a bus network, a noticeable component of the public transit system, was the focus of this study. It was introduced as a short term management strategy to help the operators maintain service quality without confusing the users by abrupt changes in the system. The proposed...

Lower-bound solution algorithm for equilibrium signal-setting problem

    , Article Transportation Research Record ; Issue 2085 , 2008 , Pages 104-110 ; 03611981 (ISSN) Sadabadi, K. F ; Zokaei Aashtiani, H ; Haghani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The equilibrium signal-setting problem is stated and subsequently formulated as a continuous equilibrium network design problem. The bilevel formulation is nonconvex and therefore cannot be solved for global optima by using descent solution algorithms. Therefore, a lower bound using a system optimal flow pattern is proposed that will be quite tight in both uncongested and highly congested network traffic situations. A solution algorithm based on the standard steepest-descent method is proposed for the lower-bound problem. Performance of the solution algorithm on a network problem is reported
