    Saccharin complexes of zinc(II) with phenanthroline and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline: Synthesis and characterization

    Abstract
    The saccharinato complexes [Zn(phen)2(sac)(H2O)]sac (1) and [Zn(sac)(dmp)(H2O)](sac) (2), where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, and sac = saccharinato ion/ligand, were synthesized by the reaction of [Zn(sac)2(H2O)4] · 2H2O with ligands and have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and 1H NMR spectroscopies. Conductivity of complexes was measured in DMSO. Compound 1 is characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and compared with some isomorphous zinc-saccharinate complexes reported previously.     Abstract
    The novel mixed ligand complexes [M(bpy)(phen-dione)](PF6)2 (M = Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II), bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine and phen-dione = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The ν(C=O) of coordinated phen-dione in these complexes are very similar to the free phen-dione ligand showing that phen-dione is not coordinated to metal ion from its C=O sites. Absorption spectra of the complexes show two absorption bands for intraligand transitions. These absorption bands show dependence to the dielectric constant of solvent.     Abstract
    The new water-soluble derivative of pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10] phenanthroline has been synthesized and characterized by conductivity measurement, elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopic studies, as well as single crystal x-ray crystallography. Theoretical calculations have been performed using the density functional theory (DFT) in order to confirm the structure and understand the electronic structure of the synthesized compound.     Carbonaceous materials (CMs) have been applied extensively for enhancing the catalytic performance of environmental catalysts, however, the self-catalytic mechanism of CMs for groundwater remediation is rarely investigated. Herein, we unveiled the catalytic ability of various CMs via Fe(III) reduction through polyvinyl alcohol-coated calcium peroxide nanoparticles (PVA@nCP) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal. Among selected CMs (graphite (G), biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC)), BC and AC showed enhancement of TCE removal of 89% and 98% via both adsorption and catalytic degradation.
