A Study on the Effect of Initial Microstructures on Deformation Behavior of an Aluminum-Copper Alloy at Elevated Temperatures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Molaei, Soheil (Author) ; Serajzadeh, Siamak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, hot deformation and creep behavior of aluminum alloy i.e.AA2017 were taken into account while the impact of the initial microstructure of the examined alloy was also studied. In order to investigate the behavior of the alloy, tensile tests were conducted at temperatures ranging from 120°C to 400°C under the nominal strain rates of 0.0005 s-1, 0.005 s-1, 0.05 s-1. In these experiments, two different initial microstructures were employed including solution treated samples as well as artificially aged specimens. The results show that in the temperature range of 180°C to 250°C, the strain rate sensitivity parameter is negative in the solution treated samples which indicates...

    Abstract
Friction stir welding (FSW) is considered a significant manufacturing process for joining of different metals and alloys and usage of this process has been developed in different industries. Accordingly, extensive works have been done on FSW of different engineering materials. However many ambiguous problems related to thermo-mechanical behavior of this process have not been solved yet. This research investigates FSW behavior of a hardenable aluminum alloy, AA2017. Firstly, thermo-mechanical response of the material has been predicted using a three-dimensional finite element analysis performed in ABAQUS software. Then, microstructural events such as grain size, distribution of second phase...

    Abstract
Microstructural changes in friction-stir welding (FSW) of artificially aged AA2017 were investigated. First, FSW was performed with rotational and linear speeds of 800 rpm and 40 mm/min, respectively. Then, microstructural studies by means of optical metallography and electron microscopy were conducted in different regions of the welded plates. Hardness testing was also employed to determine local strength and subsequent natural aging progress after welding. The results indicate that the considerable hardness degradation occurs in the thermo-mechanically affected zone owing to coarsening of semi-coherent precipitates. Grain refinement also takes place in the weld nugget as a result of...
