    , Article Protection of Metals and Physical Chemistry of Surfaces ; Vol. 50, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 371-377 Barati, N ; Sani, M. A. F ; Sadeghian, Z ; Ghasemi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Anatase nanostructured coating has been prepared on 316 L stainless steel by sol-gel dip coating. The topography of the coatings surface has been analyzed using atomic force microscopy. The anticorrosion performance of the coatings has been evaluated using polarization curves. Effects of calcination temperature, withdrawal speed and times of coating on corrosion protection have been studied. The results showed calcination temperature of 400°C and withdrawal speed of 10 cm/min are desirable conditions to achieve high corrosion protection of 316 L stainless steel in chloride containing environments. Coatings with 3 times exhibit better resistance against corrosion in 0.5 molar NaCl solutions....

    Abstract
This investigation focused on a comparison between hydroxyapatite (HA) and carbon-nanotube-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite (CNTs/HA) coatings. The HA and CNTs/HA composite (with 5wt% CNTs) coatings were prepared with the sol-gel method on 316L stainless steel. Phase evaluation by means of XRD and Raman spectroscopy was performed on the HA and CNTs/HA composite coatings. The coatings were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) in order to evaluate the biological properties of the coatings. During the first week of immersion, the increase in the amount of Ca2+ precipitation in the SBF when CNTs/HA was used was lower than for the HA coatings. This behavior can be related to the difference...

    Abstract
Uniform nanostructure anatase films were coated on 316L stainless steel by the sol-gel dip coating method. Sols with different values of pH were applied. The corrosion protective behavior of coated samples was investigated by electrochemical measurements in 0.5 molar NaCl solutions on samples placed under UV illumination and dark condition using Tafel curves. It was found that in addition to acting as a physical barrier, anatase thin films are more protective under UV illumination due to photocathodic protection. Neutral sols give better protection due to formation of more uniform and less defective coatings

    Abstract
Two kinds of carbon coated and uncoated 316L stainless steel are studied to use as bipolar plates in fuel cells. The results show that the conductive amorphous carbon film has a low corrosion rate in simulated PEMFC environment. Rather long term potentiostatic tests and SEM investigations indicate that carbon thin films can be a good candidate to use as bipolar plate

    Abstract
In the first stage, chitosan (CH)-hydroxyapatite (HA)-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composite coatings were synthesized by electrophoretic deposition technique (EPD) on 316L stainless steel substrates at different levels of pH and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, FTIR and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). A smooth distribution of HA and MWCNT particles in a chitosan matrix with strong interfacial bonding was obtained. In the next stage, effects of pH and MWCNT content of the suspension on the corrosion behavior and deposition mechanism were studied. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) curves...

In the tested ranges of SiO 2 content and sintering temperature, the highest photocatalytic activity and self-cleaning property were observed in the 15 mol% SiO 2 sample sintered at 750 °C. Addition of less than 30 mol% SiO 2 had a...

    Abstract
Bioactive glass is coated on implant's surface to improve corrosion resistance and osseointegration, when placed in the body. Bioactive glass particles were synthesized through a sol-gel process and deposited along with chitosan to form a composite coating on a stainless steel substrate using electrophoretic deposition technique. Stable suspensions of chitosan-bioactive glass were prepared using bioactive glass particles (<1 μm) and 0.5 g/l chitosan solution. The influence of ethanol-water ratio on deposition yield was investigated. For all process conditions, best results were achieved with suspension of 30 vol% water in ethanol-water containing 2 g/l bioactive glass. FTIR studies showed...

    Abstract
Laser shock peening (LSP) is known as a post processing surface treatment which can improve the mechanical properties of some materials. Shock waves are generated by confining the laser-induced plasma to cause a large pressure shock wave over a significant surface area. In the present study, effects of LSP on the electrochemical corrosion and micro hardness properties of 316L stainless steel alloy were investigated by changing the laser parameters such as the laser spot size, the average number of impacts, and the laser intensity. Since laser parameters do not cover the desired region of LSP, we have to use the proper design of experiment method, in which the D-optimal design of MATLAB was...

Investigation of microstructure effect on fretting fatigue crack initiation using crystal plasticity

    Abstract
The onset of fretting fatigue is characterized by material microstructural changes in which the extent of the damage is comparable to grain size, and hence, the microstructure characteristics could have a significant effect on fatigue crack initiation. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element crystal plasticity framework is presented for simulation of the fretting fatigue. Controlled Poisson Voronoi tessellation (CPVT) method is employed to generate the polycrystalline region. In the CPVT method, regularity parameter controls the shape of grains. In this study, the impact of grain size and regularity parameter on crack initiation life and initiation site has been investigated....

    Abstract
Fretting fatigue occurs in engineering applications where two interacting surfaces are subjected to fluctuating forces. The fluctuating forces occasionally act as a combined loading condition. The present paper investigates fretting fatigue behaviour of 316L stainless steel under such combined (i.e. tensile and bending) loading conditions. A new fixture was developed in order to apply bending and tensile loads simultaneously. Using this fixture, the effect of different bending-to-tension ratios was investigated. The results showed that increasing the contribution of bending load improves fretting fatigue life. On the other hand, increasing grain size decreases fretting fatigue life....

    Abstract
Laser shock peening (LSP) is one of the life enhancement processes by inducing compressive residual stresses into the material. The effects of repeating LSP pattern on the residual stress is investigated numerically in this study. A 3-D finite element model was developed to obtain residual stress field in the material. FEM results have shown that increasing the number of peening impacts increase the magnitude and depth of compressive residual stress. Also the average surface residual stress in the impact region increased from −291 after 1 impact to −326, −343 and −356 MPa after 2, 3 and 4 impacts respectively. Moreover, the effects of repeating LSP pattern on fatigue crack growth properties...

    Abstract
Sol was prepared by the mixing of tetra-η-butyle titanat, ethyl aceto acetate, and ethanol in an optimized condition. Polished 316L specimens were coated with the sol by dip-coating method. The influences of drying condition, withdrawal speed, calcination temperature, addition of dispersant, and pH of sol on TiO2 nanostructure coating were investigated. Choosing of alcohol as drying atmosphere hindered the crack formation. The relation between coating thickness and withdrawal speed was evaluated. The optimum temperature to create a uniform distribution of nanoparticles of anatase was derived as 400 °C. Average roughness of coating was found about 10.61 nm by AFM analysis. Dispersant addition...
