    Abstract
Al2O3-SiC composite ceramics were prepared by pressureless sintering with and without the addition of MgO, TiO2 and Y2O3 as sintering aids. The effects of these compositional variables on final density and hardness were investigated. In the present article at first α-Al2O3 and β-SiC nano powders have been synthesized by sol-gel method separately by using AlCl 3, TEOS and saccharose as precursors. Pressureless sintering was carried out in nitrogen atmosphere at 1600 °C and 1630 °C. The addition of 5 vol.% SiC to Al2O3 hindered densification. In contrast, the addition of nano MgO and nano TiO2 to Al 2O3-5 vol.% SiC composites improved densification but Y2O3 did not have positive effect on...

Preparation and characterisation of diopside-based glass-ceramic foams

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 38, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 2005-2010 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Hasheminia, S ; Nemati, A ; Eftekhari Yekta, B ; Alizadeh, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Foaming and crystallisation behaviours of compacted glass powders based on a diopside glass-ceramic composition were investigated using the sintering route. The foaming agent was 2 wt.% SiC particles. The effect of PbO on the foaming ability of glasses was investigated. The results showed that the addition of PbO not only improved the foaming ability, by improving the wettability of the glass-SiC particles but also increased the crystallisation temperature and widened the temperature interval between the dilatometric softening point and the onset of crystallisation. The glass-SiC wetting angle was decreased from 85°for the lead-free glass, to 55°for the glass that contains 15 wt.% PbO

Hydroxyapatite nanocomposites: Synthesis, sintering and mechanical properties

    Abstract
Two different hydroxyapatite based composites reinforced by oxide ceramic (20 wt%) nano crystals were synthesized by high-energy ball milling and sintered by pressure less technique. Alumina and titania nanoparticles as secondary phases improved densification and mechanical behavior of apatite and postponed its decomposition to the tricalcium phosphate (TCP) phases at elevated temperatures. Increasing the relative density of apatite using nano reinforcements leads to enhance the bending strength by more than 40% and 27% (as compared to the pure HA) and increase the hardness from 2.52 to 5.12 (Al2O3 composite) and 4.21 (TiO2 addition) GPa, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM),...

Effect of high energy ball milling on compressibility and sintering behavior of alumina nanoparticles

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 38, Issue 4 , May , 2012 , Pages 2627-2632 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Eskandari, A ; Aminzare, M ; Razavi Hesabi, Z ; Aboutalebi, S. H ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The effect of high-energy ball milling on the textural evolution of alumina nanopowders (compaction response, sinter-ability, grain growth and the degree of agglomeration) during post sintering process is studied. The applied pressure required for the breakage of the agglomerates (P y) during milling was estimated and the key elements of compressibility (i.e. critical pressure (P cr) and compressibility (b)) were calculated. Based on the results, the fracture point of the agglomerates decreased from 150 to 75 MPa with prolonged milling time from 3 to 60 min. Furthermore, the powders were formed by different shaping methods such as cold isostatic press (CIP) and uniaxial press (UP) to better...

Master sintering curves of a nanoscale 3Y-TZP powder compacts

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 547-554 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Mazaheri, M ; Simchi, A ; Dourandish, M ; Golestani Fard, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The sintering behavior of commercially available granulated ZrO2-3 mol% Y2O3 (3Y-TZP) powder compacts with an aggregate size of 75 nm was studied. The shrinkage response of the powder compacts during non-isothermal sintering was measured in a sensitive dilatometer at different heating rates. Densification and grain growth were also studied after isothermal firing in air according to different sintering cycles. The sintering and grain growth activation energy was estimated to be QS = 485 ± 12 kJ mol-1 and QG = 546 ± 23 kJ mol-1, respectively. Using the estimated Q-values, the master curves for sintering and grain growth were established and used for prediction of the densification and...

Synthesis and characterization of diopside glass-ceramic matrix composite reinforced with aluminum titanate

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 35, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 1447-1452 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Yousefi, M ; Alizadeh, P ; Eftekhari Yekta, B ; Molaie, F ; Ghafoorian, N ; Montazerian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Glass-ceramic composites in the SiO2-CaO-MgO-(Na2O) system, reinforced with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% aluminum titanate were synthesized by pressureless sintering. Optimum sintering temperatures with maximum relative density were determined for each composition. The composites were fired above the crystallization peak temperature of glass-ceramic. Mechanical properties of glass-ceramic and sintered composites, such as fracture toughness, flexural strength and Vickers microhardness, were investigated. The sintered composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the composite containing 10...
