    Abstract
Treated waste water (TWW) quality varies due to the occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) up to low μg L−1. In this study, a non-targeted metabolomic analysis was performed on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L) exposed to 4 PAHs by irrigation. The plants were watered with different concentrations of contaminants (0–100 μg L−1) for 39 days under controlled conditions and then harvested, extracted and analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Different chemometric tools based on principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) are proposed for the analysis of the complex data sets generated in the different exposure experiments....

Implementing a superhydrophobic substrate in immersed solvent–supported microextraction as a novel strategy for determination of organic pollutants in water samples

    Abstract
In this research, a new approach for extraction and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from sea and rain water samples was developed by implementing a superhydrophobic substrate and consuming the least amount of solvent. This version of solvent–supported microextraction enabled us to perform the procedure in the immersion mode with the slightest troubles arising from water leakage into the gas chromatography. The superhydrophobic property leads to the fixation of extracting solvent on the substrate surface during water sampling. To prepare a superhydrophobic substrate, a piece of melamine foam was coated by tannic acid and silica nanoparticles using methyltrimethoxysilane and...

An unbreakable on-line approach towards sol-gel capillary microextraction

    , Article Journal of Chromatography A ; Volume 1218, Issue 26 , 2011 , Pages 3952-3957 ; 00219673 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Piri-Moghadam, H ; Es'haghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work a novel unbreakable sol-gel-based in-tube device for on-line solid phase microextraction (SPME) was developed. The inner surface of a copper tube, intended to be used as a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) loop, was electrodeposited by metallic Cu followed by the self assembled monolayers (SAM) of 3-(mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (3MPTMOS). Then, poly (ethyleneglycol) (PEG) was chemically bonded to the -OH sites of the SAM already covering the inner surface of the copper loop using sol-gel technology. The homogeneity and the porous surface structure of the SAM and sol-gel coatings were examined using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and adsorption/desorption...

A novel needle trap sorbent based on carbon nanotube-sol-gel for microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from aquatic media

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 683, Issue 2 , January , 2011 , Pages 212-220 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Ayazi, Z ; Aghakhani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new type of composite material based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and sol-gel chemistry was prepared and used as sorbent for needle trap device (NTD). The synthesized composite was prepared in a way to disperse CNTs molecules in a sol-gel polymeric network. CNT/silica composites with different CNT doping levels were successfully prepared, and the extraction capability of each composite was evaluated. Effects of surfactant and the oxidation duration of CNTs on the extraction efficiency of synthesized composites were also investigated. The applicability of the synthesized sorbent was examined by developing a method based on needle trap extraction (NTE) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry...

Generic extraction medium: From highly polar to non-polar simultaneous determination

    Abstract
Sample preparation for non-target analysis is challenging due to the difficulty in the extraction of polar and non-polar analytes simultaneously. Most commercial solid sorbents lack the proper comprehensiveness for extraction of analytes with different physiochemical properties. A possible key is the combination of hydrophobic polymer and hydrophilic surface functional groups in solid based extraction methods in order to generate the susceptibility for retaining both polar and non-polar analytes. To pursue this goal, in this study, four polar groups including [sbnd]NH 2 , [sbnd]NO 2 , [sbnd]COOH, and [sbnd]COCH 3 were chemically bound to Amberlite XAD-4 substrate in order to prepare a...
