    Abstract
27Al NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the study of coordination and solvation in both aqueous and nonaqueous solutions. In this study, the complexes coexisting upon dissolution of AlCl3 in acidic acetone + methanol solutions are shown to consist essentially of mixed hexacoordinated species of the general formula [Al(CH3OH) 6-n (CH3COCH3) n ]3+ (n=1,2 and 3), all exhibiting distinctly different 27Al shielding effects. The relative populations of the various mixed species are found to be highly dependent upon the acetone:methanol mole ratio that in the more acetone-rich mixtures with aluminum become appreciably coordinated by acetone. The results demonstrate that the key factor for the...

Determination of antioxidant component and activity of rice bran extract

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , December , 2011 , Pages 1402-1406 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Arab, F ; Alemzadeh, I ; Maghsoudi, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Rice bran is one of the most important co-products in the rice milling. In this research, antioxidant activity of two Iranian rice bran varieties, Fajr and Tarem, extracted by three different solvents (methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate) was evaluated. The order of antioxidant activity was evaluated by measurement of total phenolic content, antioxidant activity in linoleic acid system, reducing power and scavenging capacity by DPPH radical. The methanolic extract of Fajr rice bran showed a total phenolic content of 3.31 mg Gallic acid/gr rice bran and a DPPH free radical-scavenging activity of 93.91%, achieved at 50 mg/ml concentration, and a percent inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation...

Optimisation of a microwave-assisted method for extracting withaferin A from Withania somnifera Dunal. using central composite design

    Abstract
Introduction - Recently, there have been growing attention on the modification and optimisation of new extraction and quantification methods, caused by the lack of environmentally friendly methodologies for the extraction of phytochemicals from complex matrices. In the case of pharmaceutical compounds, not only the extraction procedure but also the analysis method should be efficient, precise, fast and easy. Objectives - The essential pharmaceutical characteristics and trace concentration of withanolides led us to modify and optimise the previously reported extraction and quantification procedure for withaferin A (WA) as a candidate for withanolides.Matrial and methods - The WA from the...

The role of co-solvents in improving the direct transesterification of wet microalgal biomass under supercritical condition

    , Article Bioresource Technology ; Volume 193 , October , 2015 , Pages 90-96 ; 09608524 (ISSN) Abedini Najafabadi, H ; Vossoughi, M ; Pazuki, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
In this research, direct conversion of wet algal biomass into biodiesel using supercritical methanol was studied. In this process, microalgal lipids simultaneously was extracted and converted to biodiesel under high pressure and temperature conditions without using any catalyst. Several experiments have been performed to optimize the methanol amount and it has been revealed that the best performance was achieved by using methanol/wet biomass ratio of 8:1. The effect of using various co-solvents in increasing the efficiency of the supercritical process was investigated. It has been shown that hexane was the most effective co-solvent and its optimal ratio respect to wet biomass was 6:1. The...

Sol-gel-based silver nanoparticles-doped silica - Polydiphenylamine nanocomposite for micro-solid-phase extraction

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 886 , July , 2015 , Pages 56-65 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Banihashemi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
A nanocomposite of silica-polydiphenylamine doped with silver nanoparticles (Ag-SiO2-PDPA) was successfully synthesized by the sol-gel process. For its preparation, PDPA was mixed with butanethiol capped Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and added to the silica sol solution. The Ag NPs were stabilized as a result of their adsorption on the SiO2 spheres. The surface characteristic of nanocomposite was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In this work the Ag-SiO2-PDPA nanocomposite was employed as an efficient sorbent for micro-solid-phase extraction (μ-SPE) of some selected pesticides. An amount of 15 mg of the prepared sorbent was used to extract and...

Characterization of volatile components of Iranian saffron using factorial-based response surface modeling of ultrasonic extraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis

    , Article Journal of Chromatography A ; Volume 1216, Issue 33 , 2009 , Pages 6088-6097 ; 00219673 (ISSN) Jalali Heravi, M ; Parastar, H ; Ebrahimi Najafabadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The volatile components of Iranian saffron were extracted using ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE) technique and then were separated and detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Variables affecting the extraction procedure were screened by using a 25-1 fractional factorial design and among them; sample amount, solvent volume, solvent ratio and extraction time were optimized by applying a rotatable central composite design (CCD). The optimum values of factors were: 2.38 g sample, 29.04 mL solvent, 69.23% MeOH solvent ratio and 71.8 min for the extraction time. Forty constituents were identified for Iranian saffron by GC-MS representing 90% of the total peak area. The major...
