NN-RED: An AQM mechanism based on neural networks
, Article Electronics Letters ; Volume 43, Issue 19 , 2007 , Pages 1053-1055 ; 00135194 (ISSN) ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
A novel active queue management (AQM) method is proposed. This method, named NN-RED, is based on the use of a neural network for early congestion prediction. By simulations, it is demonstrated that the performance of the proposed approach is better than the random early detection (RED) method that is currently known as one of the best AQM methods in solving congestion problems. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2007

Abstract
Active Queue Management (AQM) policies provide an early indication of incipient congestion to the source. In this paper, we propose a new AQM policy that predicts the instantaneous queue length at next time instant using adaptive filtering technique. To use the algorithm in fast routers, we reduce its computational complexity using a direct method to compute the manipulating signals. We show that adaptive congestion estimation is able to control the oscillations in the instantaneous queue length. We compare the performance of our method with respect to other well-known AQM methods such as RED and PI which are also simulated by MATLAB. We also compare the computational complexity of these...

Abstract
Congestion is an important issue in the network environment. To keep stable the perfor-mance of the network, congestion control algorithms have been extensively studied. Queue management method employed by the routers is one of the important issues in the congestion control study. Active Queue Management (AQM) has been proposed for early detection of congestion inside the network. AQM mechanisms control the queue length in a router by dropping arriving packets. The Random Early Detection (RED) is the most popular AQM mechanism used in routers on the Intenet to allow network users to simultaneously achieve high throughput and low average delay. The RED algorithm may cause heavy oscillation of...

Abstract
When the network suffers from congestion, the core or edge routers signal the incidence of congestion through the active queue management (AQM) to the sources. The time-varying nature of the network dynamics and the complex process of retuning the current AQM algorithms for different operating points necessitate the development of a new AQM algorithm. Since the non-minimum phase characteristics of the network dynamics restrict direct application of the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, we propose a compensated PID controller based on a new control strategy addressing the phase-lag and restrictions caused by the delay. Based on the unstable internal dynamics caused by the...
Direct-DMC for AQM computational complexity reduction in TCP/IP networks

Abstract
Active queue management (AQM) mechanisms are designed to provide better support for end-to-end congestion control mechanisms of transmission control protocol (TCP) in TCP/IP networks. This paper introduces Direct Dynamic Matrix Control (D-DMC) as a new AQM method in dynamic TCP networks. Ability of the controller in handling system delay along with its simplicity and low computational loads makes D-DMC a privileged AQM method in high speed networks. The controller is designed based on a small signal linearized fluid-flow model of TCP/AQM networks. The computational complexity analysis as well as the MATLAB simulation results shows the out-performance of the developed controller for both...

Abstract
Model predictive controllers, due to their capability to control the time variant and delayed systems, are considered for congestion control in computer networks. To extend the application of these controllers as an active queue management (AQM) system in dynamic TCP/IP networks, a new rule-based predictive controller is proposed. This controller uses the small signal linearized fluid-flow model of the TCP/IP networks and simulates the future behavior of control system by applying few candidate control sequences. Using the extremes of the resulted predicted output sequences, optimal control signal is determined based on some appropriate rules. This approach benefits from the mentioned...
