    Abstract
(Liquid + liquid) equilibrium (LLE) data were obtained for the ternary systems of {water + propionic acid (PA) + isopropyl methyl ketone (IPMK.)} and of {water + PA + isobutyl methyl ketone (IBMK)} at atmospheric pressure and temperatures (303.15, 313,15 and 323.15) K, respectively. The effect of electrolytes on the LLE data for the ternary systems was also investigated. The results obtained from the experiments showed that the electrolytes studied in this work, i.e., NaCl and KCl significantly affect the solubility of PA in the organic solvents used in the experiments. The results also showed that the distribution coefficients for PA and the selectivity of the solvents in extracting PA,...

Prediction of Henry's constant in polymer solutions using PCOR equation of state coupled with an activity coefficient model

    , Article Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 23, Issue 3 , 2015 , Pages 528-535 ; 10049541 (ISSN) Tourani, S ; Behvandi, A ; Khorasheh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the polymer chain of rotator (PCOR) equation of state (EOS) was used together with an EOS/GE mixing rule (MHV1) and the Wilson's equation as an excess-Gibbs-energy model in the proposed approach to extend the capability and improve the accuracy of the PCOR EOS for predicting the Henry's constant of solutions containing polymers. The results of the proposed method compared with two equation of state (van der Waals and GC-Flory) and three activity coefficient models (UNIFAC, UNIFAC-FV and Entropic-FV) indicated that the PCOR EOS/Wilson's equation provided more accurate results. The interaction parameters of Wilson's equation were fitted with Henry's constant experimental data...

Measurement of partition coefficients of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase enzymes in aqueous two-phase systems containing poly(ethylene glycol) and Na2SO4/KH2PO4 at different temperatures

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 292, Issue 1-2 , May , 2010 , Pages 80-86 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Shahriari, Sh ; Taghikhani, V ; Vossoughi, M ; Safe kordi, A. A ; Alemzadeh, I ; Pazuki, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this research, partitioning of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase was investigated in polymer-salt aqueous two-phase systems containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights such as 4000, 6000 and 10,000 and Na2SO4 or KH2PO4. The experimental partition coefficients were measured at T = (298.5, 301.5, 303.5, 305.5 and 308) K. The results showed that the concentration of salt in feed had more effect on partition coefficients of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase in aqueous two-phase systems than the concentration of polymer in initial feed. Also, the results indicated that temperature had a small effect on partitioning of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase enzymes. The partition...

Liquid-Liquid equilibrium data, density, viscosity, and interfacial tension of ternary system (Toluene-Acetic Acid-Water) at 298.15 K: Experiment and correlation

    , Article Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data ; Volume 62, Issue 12 , 2017 , Pages 4133-4143 ; 00219568 (ISSN) Memari, M ; Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Seifkordi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data, density, viscosity, and interfacial tension for the ternary system of toluene-acetic acid-water were measured at 298.15 K and 101.7 kPa. The Othmer-Tobias and the Hand correlations were used to check the reliability of the experimental tie-lines. Moreover, the distribution coefficient and the separation factor were explored. It was found from the experimental results that a maximum separation factor value happens at an acetic acid mass fraction of 0.02 in the organic phase. Density, viscosity, and interfacial tension were correlated using the appropriate correlations such that the predicted results have excellent agreement with the experimental data. The...

Application of a new gibbs energy equation to model a distillation tower for production of pure ethanol

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 34, Issue 10 , 2011 , Pages 1715-1722 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Hashemi, N ; Pazuki, G ; Vossoughi, M ; Hemmati, S ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A steady-state equilibrium-stage model based on MESH equations was proposed to simulate saline extractive distillation columns. The interaction parameters between each component of water-CaCl 2 and ethanol-water were obtained from mean ionic activity coefficients and vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) experimental data. Additionally, the interaction coefficients for the ethanol-CaCl 2 pair were fitted to experimental VLE data which were reported by Nishi for the ethanol-water-CaCl 2 system. It should be noted that adjustable parameters between each pair were considered to be temperature dependent. The results confirmed that the proposed model could accurately predict the experimental...

Equilibrium modeling of xylene adsorption on molecular sieves

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 298, Issue 1 , November , 2010 , Pages 54-59 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Tourani, S ; Baghalha, M ; Khorasheh, F ; Behvandi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The separation of xylene isomers is an important application in separation processes that is based on their adsorption properties on different adsorbents. In this work, the Price and Danner method was employed with a neural network to investigate the adsorption behavior of binary systems of p-xylene/m-xylene, p-diethyl benzene/m-xylene, and p-diethyl benzene/p-xylene and the ternary system of p-diethyl benzene/m-xylene/p-xylene at 130 and 175°C. The Redlich-Kister, Wilson, and NRTL models were used to determine the activity coefficients in the adsorbed phase. Comparison with experimental data from the literature indicated that the proposed thermodynamic model would best determine surface...

Study of phase behaviour for the aqueous two-phase polymer - polymer systems using the modified UNIQUAC-NRF model

    , Article Physics and Chemistry of Liquids ; Volume 47, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 148-159 ; 00319104 (ISSN) Pazuki, G. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Vossoughi, M ; Radfarnia, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A modified form of the UNIQUAC-NRF activity coefficient model was used to study the phase behaviour of the aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (DEX) with different molecular weights at various temperatures. In the proposed model, a ternary interaction parameter was added to the expression for the excess Gibbs free energy and, in turn, to the corresponding activity coefficient rendered by the UNIQUAC-NRF model. The combinatorial part of the new model takes the same form as that of the original UNIQUAC model and the residual part considers the nonrandomness and also the binary and the ternary interactions among the molecules in mixtures of PEG, DEX, and...

    Abstract
Saturation molality of sodium chloride in mixed aqueous electrolyte solutions containing NaCl, CaSO4 and Na2SO4 was measured at atmospheric pressure over the wide range of temperatures using an equilibrium cell equipped with an accurate temperature control system. The measurements were carried out at different CaSO4 and Na2SO4 concentrations. In order to check the repeatability of the experimental data for the saturation molality of NaCl, the experiments were replicated three times and the values reported were the average of the replicas. To model the data generated in this work, the PDH+UNIFAC-Dortmund activity coefficient model was used. The model used to predict the mean ionic activity...
