Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Effect of Moisture on Methane Adsorption and Desorption by Activated Carbon at 273.5 K

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 22-30 ; 10039953 (ISSN) Farzad, S ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Aminshahidi, B ; Lay, E. N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Adsorption and desorption of methane by activated carbon (AC) at constant temperature and at various pressures were investigated. The effect of moisture was also studied. A volumetric method was used, up to 40 bar, at a temperature of 273.5 K. Results of a dry AC sample were compared with those obtained from a moist sample and two different ACs with different physical and surface properties were used. As expected, the results showed that the existence of moisture, trapped in the AC pores, could lead to a decrease in the amount of methane adsorbed and a decrease in the amount of methane delivered during desorption. To model the experimental results, a large variety of adsorption isotherms...

Optimizing temperature and introducing new process arrangements for elevating clay's longevity based on the known poisons in the separation process of trace olefins from aromatics

    , Article Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology ; 2021 ; 02682575 (ISSN) Rouhani, H ; Farhadi, F ; Akbari Kenari, M ; Ramakrishna, S ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2021
    Abstract
BACKGROUND: The clay treatment widely utilized to reduce unsaturated components in aromatic stream has a detrimental effect on catalyst lifetime. Due to the short lifetime of commercial clay, a huge number of studies have been carried out to address this problem over the last decade. This study aims to optimize the temperature for longer serviceability of clay by removal of unsaturated aliphatic components from aromatic streams through the adsorption and catalytic properties of clay. A novel process arrangement is introduced by scheduling the reuse of deactivated clay that is discarded after deactivation. RESULTS: Results showed that the suitable range of temperature for olefin removal is...

Equilibrium modeling of xylene adsorption on molecular sieves

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 298, Issue 1 , November , 2010 , Pages 54-59 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Tourani, S ; Baghalha, M ; Khorasheh, F ; Behvandi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The separation of xylene isomers is an important application in separation processes that is based on their adsorption properties on different adsorbents. In this work, the Price and Danner method was employed with a neural network to investigate the adsorption behavior of binary systems of p-xylene/m-xylene, p-diethyl benzene/m-xylene, and p-diethyl benzene/p-xylene and the ternary system of p-diethyl benzene/m-xylene/p-xylene at 130 and 175°C. The Redlich-Kister, Wilson, and NRTL models were used to determine the activity coefficients in the adsorbed phase. Comparison with experimental data from the literature indicated that the proposed thermodynamic model would best determine surface...

First-principles study of molecule adsorption on Ni-decorated monolayer MoS2

    , Article Journal of Computational Electronics ; Volume 18, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 826-835 ; 15698025 (ISSN) Barzegar, M ; Berahman, M ; Asgari, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2019
    Abstract
The interactions between four different gas molecules (methanol, o-xylene, p-xylene and m-xylene) and Ni-decorated monolayer MoS2 were investigated by means of density functional computations to exploit its potential application as a gas sensor. The electronic properties of the Ni-decorated monolayer MoS2 and gas molecule (adsorbent–adsorbate properties) strongly depend on the Ni-decorated monolayer MoS2 structure and the molecular configuration of the adsorbate. The adsorption properties of volatile organic compound (VOC) molecules on Ni-decorated MoS2 has been studied taking into account the parameters such as adsorption energy, energy bandgap, density of states, and Mulliken charge...

Enhancement of biological nitrogen removal performance using novel carriers based on the recycling of waste materials

    , Article Water Research ; Volume 170 , March , 2020 Massoompour, A. R ; Borghei, S. M ; Raie, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This study aims to enhance biological nitrogen removal performance by the innovative carbon-based carriers. The new carriers were produced based on recycling waste materials. In these carriers, the advantages of the hybrid system and physicochemical properties of activated carbon were integrated to promote microbial attachment. To verify the performance of the new carriers compared to the conventional moving carriers, the experiments were conducted in two parallel laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors under various operating conditions. The analysis revealed that the specific surface area of the new carrier with a total pore volume of 0.0015cm3/gr was 10.9 times the specific surface...

Adsorption properties of halloysite modified acrylamide/quince seeds-based hydrogel: Experimental and DFT investigation

    , Article Journal of Polymers and the Environment ; Volume 30, Issue 11 , 2022 , Pages 4637-4650 ; 15662543 (ISSN) Abdollahizad, G ; Mirzaee Valadi, F ; Akbarzadeh, E ; Gholami, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2022
    Abstract
In this work Halloysite nanotubes were used to synthesis a series of modified acrylamide/Quince seeds-based hydrogels (Poly (AAm-co-QS)/Haln). The as-prepared Poly (AAm-co-QS)/Haln hydrogels displayed improved performance as adsorbent in elimination of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The structures of the prepared Poly (AAm-co-QS)/Haln hydrogels were identified by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, BET, TGA and EDX. Effect of pH value on the swelling behavior and dye adsorption performance of as-prepared hydrogels was explored. The adsorption MB results suggested that the adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption experiments at various pH condition indicated that...

Synthesis and application of silica aerogel-MWCNT nanocomposites for adsorption of organic pollutants

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 2 F , 2010 , Pages 122-132 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Bargozin, H ; Amirkhani, L ; Moghaddas, J. S ; Ahadian, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Silica aerogel-multi wall carbon nanotube composites were synthesized successfully with a waterglass precursor and an ambient pressure drying method. Pure silica aerogels are so fragile that they cannot be used easily. Carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were used as reinforcements to strengthen the mechanical properties of pure silica aerogels. Results show that inserting small amounts of MWCNT causes silica aerogels to monolith. By addition of MWCNT, monolith nanocomposites were produced with 800 m2/g surface area and a 140° contact angle. Results show that the silica aerogels and reinforced composites have an excellent adsorption property for the removal of organic pollutants from water. The average...

    Abstract
Volatile organic compounds are a major cause of air pollution; therefore, VOCs are a serious fulmination for the environment. According to studies, adsorption processes have a high performance for the removal of pollutants that by selecting the proper absorbent, efficiency will be improved.
