The study of network effects on research impact in Africa

    , Article Science and Public Policy ; Volume 48, Issue 4 , 2021 , Pages 462-473 ; 03023427 (ISSN) Tahmooresnejad, L ; Beaudry, C ; Mirnezami, S. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper studies the relationship between the position of individual scientists within co-authorship networks and their scientific performance. Using co-authorship data from African scientists in the Health and Medical Sciences within a timespan of 15 years (2000–2015), we characterize the collaboration networks and calculate centrality measures for each scientist to explore how scientific production and impact can be associated with their position within the network. Our findings reveal that authors who occupy a better position within their network and are deemed to actively collaborate with others also have a higher research impact. In this regard, South African scientists do not differ...

Does experiencing international research collaboration permanently affect the impact of scientific production? evidence from africa

    , Article Journal of African Economies ; Volume 31, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 251-271 ; 09638024 (ISSN) Mirnezami, S. R ; Beaudry, C ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper examines the effect of experiencing a research collaboration between African scientists and their international partners on the African scientists' research impact, measured by scores based on the number of citations and journal impact factor. Using a difference-in-difference regression analysis on publication data of African scientists, the results show that international research collaboration in a given year has a positive and significant effect on research impact, which lasts in the subsequent years. The presence of such permanent effect suggests a sort of 'permanent learning by international collaboration'. The positive effect of international collaboration on research...

Sustainable transport indicators: Definition and integration

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 83-96 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a different interpretation of sustainable transportation, is introduced, in which sustainability with respect to transportation sector for the selected countries is evaluated. This interpretation characterizes "sustainable development" through "harmonic development". It means sustainable development with special focus on transportation can be measured by the degree of conformity between environment, economy, and social aspects on one hand, and transportation on the other hand. The best indicator to perform such a measurement is elasticity. The database used for the study encompasses a series of national indicators for each country Seventy nine countries were initially selected...

    Abstract
Background: Data about the global, regional, and country-specific variations in the levels and trends of colorectal cancer are required to understand the impact of this disease and the trends in its burden to help policy makers allocate resources. Here we provide a status report on the incidence, mortality, and disability caused by colorectal cancer in 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017. Methods: Vital registration, sample vital registration, verbal autopsy, and cancer registry data were used to generate incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) estimates of colorectal cancer at the global, regional, and national levels. We also determined the association...

    Abstract
In the view of the latest status and the potential of developing wind energy in South Africa, the present study aims to perform technical–economic–environmental analysis on a wind turbine system with HOMER software using the 20-years average data of the wind speed obtained from NASA's database, for providing the electricity to residential buildings. The results showed that the Port Elizabeth station, had the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) with the value of -0.363 $/kWh when using the EOLO wind turbine, and the Bloemfontein station had the highest LCOE with the value of 1.601 $/kWh when using the Turby wind turbine. The results from the step-wise assessment ratio analysis...

    Abstract
Background Oesophageal cancer is a common and often fatal cancer that has two main histological subtypes: oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Updated statistics on the incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer, and on the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) caused by the disease, can assist policy makers in allocating resources for prevention, treatment, and care of oesophageal cancer. We report the latest estimates of these statistics for 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017, by age, sex, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD). Methods We used data...

Climate Classification of the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) by Introducing a New Index for Clustering Validation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajabi, Reza (Author) ; Moghim, Sanaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Clustering presents valuable information in discovery of the climatic zones. To use clustering approaches, similarity measure, clustering algorithm, and clustering validity index should be determined. To find climatic zones over Middle East nad North Africa (MENA), this study performs k-means clustering with Euclidean distance as the similarity measure on four monthly precipitation datasets (CRU, GPCC, UDEL, and PREC/L) and two monthly temperature datasets (CRU, NOAA GHCN-CAMS). This study aims to validate clustering results and find a proper number of clusters. For this purpose, five traditional validity indices are examined on experimental datasets. Results show significant differences...

    Countries’ classification by environmental resilience

    Abstract
Rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization affect countries’ vulnerability to future disasters. This study investigates the vulnerability of 141 countries to natural and anthropogenic hazards using six environmental indicators including air pollution, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, access to drinking water, access to improved sanitation, environmental risks (total death and affected people), and energy use. Results confirm that the resilience varies by the location. Furthermore, this work delineates the World countries using the environmental resilience score. The most resilient countries are located in Europe and North America and the least resilient countries are in...

    Abstract
Snakebite envenoming is an important cause of preventable death. The World Health Organization (WHO) set a goal to halve snakebite mortality by 2030. We used verbal autopsy and vital registration data to model the proportion of venomous animal deaths due to snakes by location, age, year, and sex, and applied these proportions to venomous animal contact mortality estimates from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. In 2019, 63,400 people (95% uncertainty interval 38,900–78,600) died globally from snakebites, which was equal to an age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of 0.8 deaths (0.5–1.0) per 100,000 and represents a 36% (2–49) decrease in ASMR since 1990. India had the greatest number...

    Abstract
Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood diarrhoea. Methods We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries,...
