A study on Existing Economical-managerial Strategies for Life Extension/replacement of Aging Aircraft Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarvahed, Hamed (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As aircraft fleets get older, the challenge of Flight Safety gets greater. This Thesis focus on management strategies and principles to keep long-life fleet safe and effective into old age. But the safety and efficacy are not the only ones who are considered at long-life fleet. Here the question arises why the aircraft prior to exposure to the effects of rising life expectancy, are not replaced by other aircraft. The reason is the high cost of the replacement. Aircraft are expensive to design and manufacture. In commercial aviation, extreme competition and miniscule profit force pressures to delay replacement of older aircraft with expensive new types. But in Military aircraft reason for...

Airlines maintenance cost analysis using system dynamics modeling

    , Article 30th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2016, 25 September 2016 through 30 September 2016 ; 2016 ; 9783932182853 (ISBN) Fouladi, E ; Farkhondeh, F ; Khalili, N ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Maintenance costs in airlines change as time passes. As airplane ages, it needs more often and more expensive checks. Due to these growing expenses, airlines are getting more interested in cost analysis. Under financial pressure, they avoid buying new airplanes and try to maintain the old ones, but sometimes try to cut the maintenance costs by ignoring or delaying some checks. In other words, they are more disposed to spend small amount of money frequently through time, than to spend a great deal on a new airplane with low maintenance costs. Therefore, in such situations, the following questions raise that what solution is more efficient as we look dynamically to the system? For answering...

Modeling of Principals Structure Elements Deflection and Life Extension of a Wing Structure Using Composite Materials or Shape Memory Alloys

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ekhlas, Ali (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the main problems in the airline industry is that many aircrafts of today's fleet are approaching their calendaring life, and it is impossible to buy new planes and supply previous ones for most of the companies. Therefore, in order to extend the life of these aged planes, some studies have been performed. The purpose of these studies is to discover the causes of aging and removing them. Repairing, replacement and reinforcing some elements of the structure are important parts of this procedure. This process is called aging. One of the requirements of aging technology is the examination of the structural response to the applied external loads and knowledge of the structural design....

Identification and Attractiveness Assessment of Technologies Used in Aging Aircraft Life Extension

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Morteza (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lifetime extension would be a necessary preventive action to halt micro cracks expansion on the airplane external surface. To decide about whether to perform this operation, one should examine technological maturity, costs and technical parameters. Technical status in lifetime extension is one of the major drivers of this decision which should be considered in the first step of technology management process which is known as the technology attractiveness step. In this research, major technologies of rejuvenation is examined and categorized by the technology mapping. Also, key processes of rejuvenation and technological fields ranking has been determined by the procedural view tools of the...

Structural Reliability in Aging Aircraft Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aminizade, Ehsan (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aging Aircraft with life extension, Conversion or replacing them with new aircrafts are of the decisions in front of airliners after their retirement. Decision making for repairing aircraft to increase its life is depended upon various parameters like its cost and reliability. The thesis evaluated the reliability of the structure of an aircraft before and after life extension. For this purpose, using the statistical data, the predominant failure modes are studied and based on these failure modes the border between fracture and health of the structure which is called limit state function is defined. After this using first order reliability method (FORM), the probability of the failures is...

Aging aircraft cost analysis using system dynamics modeling

    , Article 29th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2014 ; 7-12 September , 2014 ; ISBN: 3932182804 Fouladi, E ; Shadaab, N ; Abedian, A ; Tanara, A. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ways to reduce an airline's cost has been studied for years. In fact, in order to achieve this goal, ones need to know different types of airline's costs including; fuel and oil, maintenance, Ticketing, passenger services, etc. and their impact on the total cost of an airline. According to announcement of ICAO [1], "maintenance cost (about 11% of total cost) is the second major cost after fuel and oil". Therefore, this may attract airline owners' attention to find ways to control maintenance cost and eventually the total cost of an airline. Though, there are many systematic approaches to analyze cost reduction and making policies, in this article, SD modeling is applied to develop a...
