    Abstract
Turbocharging of gasoline engines has been improved less than diesel engines due to some difficulties, especially knock phenomena. They require wider air flow range and faster response too. A computer code is developed to simulate turbocharged gasoline engine behavior. A three zone combustion model is employed. Different performance curves at speed and equivalence ratio ranges are prepared. By this code naturally aspirated and turbocharged behavior are compared. A turbocharged aftercooled engine has been studied in various cases to complete the investigation. Some aftercooler effects are described experimentally. Modeling and experimental results are compared providing valuable achievements....

    , Article AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE 42nd Joint Propulsion Conference, Sacramento, CA, 9 July 2006 through 12 July 2006 ; Volume 8 , 2006 , Pages 6283-6292 ; 1563478188 (ISBN); 9781563478185 (ISBN) Saghafi, F ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The feasibility of using fluidic thrust-vectoring system, as a control technique for the longitudinal and lateral trim purpose was investigated in this study. For this purpose, integration of a Co-flow method into the propulsion unit of a conceptual aerial vehicle was assumed. The focus of the research presented was to estimate the required thrust vector angle in order to trim the aerial vehicle in different flight phases. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires secondary air flow to deflect the engine exhaust gas, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable secondary air supply. It was found that thrust vectoring could be an effective mean of...

    Abstract
In this paper the effect of simultaneous operation of the automotive radiator, fan, engine, and cooler system on radiator coolant inlet temperature is studied. For this purpose, an analytical model is developed to simulate the automotive cooling system. First, the heat transfer rate and air pressure drop in radiators with louvered corrugated fins and flat tubes are modeled and compared with wind tunnel test results over six radiator cores. Also, the air flow path is simulated. Two preexisting codes are used to simulate the automotive engine and cooler system. Then a code is developed in order to investigate the effect of different parameters related to each component of the cooling system on...

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering ; Volume 227, Issue 6 , 2013 , Pages 1036-1052 ; 09544100 (ISSN) Davar, A ; Shokrollahi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this article, analysis of supersonic flutter of functionally graded open conical shell panels with clamped and simply supported edges is presented. The aeroelastic stability problem is formulated based on first-order shear deformation theory as well as classical shell theory and solved using Galerkin method. The effects of the volume fractions of constituent materials, the semi-vertex and subtended angles, thickness, and length on the flutter of the functionally graded conical shell panel are investigated. It is shown that the discrepancies between the results of the present classical shell theory and first-order shear deformation theory for the critical aerodynamic pressure are generally...

    , Article Energy and Buildings ; Volume 43, Issue 6 , June , 2011 , Pages 1329-1333 ; 03787788 (ISSN) Sajadi, B ; Saidi, M. H ; Mohebbian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
During the recent decade, high induction diffusers have become more appealing in applications which require relatively high ventilation airflow rates, such as clean rooms. In this research, the effect of geometric parameters on the performance of a specific type of swirling air diffuser is investigated numerically. The results show that although the diffuser slots geometry, namely their angle and aspect ratio, is impressive on the diffuser performance, it is not as important as the swirling blade angle and the performance is almost constant in a wide range of slots specifications. The results also demonstrate that the diffuser performance and the resultant indoor airflow distribution highly...

    Abstract
Passive cooling systems such as wind towers or wind catchers can create thermal comfort for building residents in hot and dry regions. This paper introduces an experimental study of a modular design of wind tower called the modular wind tower with wetted surfaces. Air temperature, relative humidity (RH) and airflow velocity parameters were measured at different times and at points when the velocity of the ambient air was zero. The results show that the modular wind tower can decrease the air temperature by an average of 10 °C and increase the relative humidity of airflow in a building by approximately 36% on average. Additionally, the wind tower can create the airflow velocity entering the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a three-dimensional steady state incompressible turbulent air flow is considered in a large single room. The buoyancy affected turbulent air flow is numerically simulated by solving governing equations. The turbulence modeling includes both κ - ε and zero-equation models and their results are compared to the experimental data. The paper reviews several aspects, such as displacement of radiator system performance, temperature and flow field distribution and comfort conditions. The results show that the best temperature distribution and comfort condition are obtained when the radiator is installed under the window and its height is equal to or greater than that of the window. ©...

Experimental method for calculation drags reduction in air cavity boat

    , Article 9th International Conference on Fast Sea Transportation, FAST 2007, Shanghai, 23 September 2007 through 27 September 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 278-285 ; 9781622764129 (ISBN) Fakhraee, A ; Rad, M ; Amini, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The search for higher ship speeds and better propulsive performance has resulted in many performance enhancement techniques. One technique is to introduce an air film along the bottom of the hull to reduce skin friction drag. The air film system opens many possibilities for using designs with larger payloads such as barges and tankers, as well as catamarans with larger deck space which otherwise are not attractive because of their higher propulsion power. Although reducing hull drag by air injection was proposed in the beginning of this century, it still remains to be fully exploited. In this thesis, two models are used to do the experiments. The first one was a simple catamaran model and...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 4 B , August , 2011 , Pages 923-929 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Hanafizadeh, P ; Saidi, M. H ; Nouri Gheimasi, A ; Ghanbarzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this study, the flow patterns of air-water, two-phase flows have been investigated experimentally in a vertical mini pipe. The flow regimes were observed by a high speed video recorder in pipes with diameters of 2,3 and 4 mm and length 27, 31 and 25 cm, respectively. The comprehensive visualization of air-water, two-phase flow in a vertical mini pipe has been performed to realize the physics of such a two-phase flow. Different flow patterns of air-water flow were observed simultaneously in the mini pipe at different values of air and water flow rates. Consequently, the flow pattern map was proposed for flow in the mini-pipe, in terms of superficial velocities of liquid and gas phases. The...

    Abstract
In the recent decades, cleanrooms have found growing applications in broad range of industries such as pharmacy and microelectronics. Concerns about negative effects of the contaminant exposure on the human health and product quality motivate many researchers towards understanding of the airflow and contaminant distribution though these environments. With an improvement in computational capacity of the computers, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique has become a powerful tool to study the engineering problems including indoor air quality (IAQ). In this research, indoor airflow in a full-scale cleanroom is investigated numerically using Eulerian-Eulerian approach. To evaluate the...

Panel flutter analysis of general laminated composite plates

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 92, Issue 12 , November , 2010 , Pages 2906-2915 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Rasekh, M ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The problem of nonlinear aeroelasticity of a general laminated composite plate in supersonic air flow is examined. The classical plate theory along with the von-Karman nonlinear strains is used for structural modeling, and linear piston theory is used for aerodynamic modeling. The coupled partial differential equations of motion are derived by use of Hamilton's principle and Galerkin's method is used to reduce the governing equations to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations in time, which are then solved by a direct numerical integration method. Effects of in-plane force, static pressure differential, fiber orientation and aerodynamic damping on the nonlinear aeroelastic...

    Abstract
Aero-thermoelastic analysis of a simply supported functionally graded truncated conical shell subjected to supersonic air flow is performed to predict the flutter boundaries. The temperature-dependent properties of the FG shell are assumed to be graded through the thickness according to a simple rule of mixture and power-law function of volume fractions of material constituents. Through the thickness steady-state heat conduction is considered for thermal analysis. To perform the stability analysis, the general nonlinear equations of motion are first derived using the classical Love's shell theory and the von Karman-Donnell-type of kinematic nonlinearity together with the linearized...
