    Abstract
The focus of this research is on the fabrication of aluminium-B4C and aluminium-ZrSiO4 composites by vortex method as a liquid phase process of metal matrix composites. SEM observations show that reinforcement particles are dispersed homogeneously throughout the aluminium matrix. Density, mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength of Al base MMCs containing different volume fractions (5, 10 and 15 %) of micro-reinforcements are examined separately and compared with those of monolithic aluminium. Results show that mechanical properties of samples are noticeably higher than those of the monolithic aluminium. The optimum amount of reinforcement in this...

    Abstract
Owing to the advantages of nanocomposites for structural applications, we present microstructural evolutions and texture development during dissimilar friction stir welding (DFSW) of an Al-matrix hybrid nanocomposite (Al-2 vol.-% Al2O3-2 vol.-% SiC) with AA1050. It is shown that DFSW can successfully be performed at a rotating speed of 1200 rev min−1 and a transverse speed of 50 mm min−1 while locating the nanocomposite at retreating side. Formation of macro-, micro-, and nano-mechanical interlocks between dissimilar base materials (BMs) as a result of FSW tool stirring action possessed an impact influence on the mechanical performance of dissimilar welds. Electron microscopy revealed...

    Abstract
In this research, the possibility that nanostructured aluminium titanate (tialite) powder can be used as a chemical source for producing Al2O3 and Al3Ti precipitates in aluminium matrix composites has been investigated. Optical microscopy, FE-SEM, XRD, DSC and TGA examinations were used to characterize the synthesized specimens. The results showed that a porous structure and inferior mechanical properties were obtained in as-sintered samples. The further thermomechanical treatments i.e. cyclic rolling and hot extrusion improved the mechanical properties and led to a dense microstructure with a homogeneous distribution of Al2O3 and...

    Abstract
In the present study, the hybrid reinforcements (Fe3O4–SiC) novel composite has been successfully fabricated by powder metallurgy method. Adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles and SiC hybrid reinforcements in the aluminium matrix, improved the magnetic permeability of aluminium matrix composites as well as, thermal properties without mechanical degradation. In this study, the aim was to define the influence of SiC–Fe3O4 nanoparticles on microstructural, thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties of the composite. Based on obtained results, the highest density and hardness is 2.72 g/cm3 and 93 HV respectively. Adding (10–30 wt% SiC) into Al–15Fe3O4 slightly improved the magnetic saturation from...

    Abstract
An investigation into the addition of different weight percentages of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to find the optimum wt.% and its effect on the microstructure, thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties of aluminum matrix composite was conducted using the powder metallurgy method. The purpose of this research was to develop magnetic properties in aluminum. Based on the obtained results, the value of density, hardness, and saturation magnetization (Ms) from 2.33 g/cm3, 43 HV and 2.49 emu/g for Al-10 Fe3O4 reached a maximum value of 3.29 g/cm3, 47 HV and 13.06 emu/g for the Al-35 Fe3O4 which showed an improvement of 41.2%, 9.3%, and 424.5%, respectively. The maximum and minimum coercivity (Hc) was...

Fabrication of aluminium matrix composites reinforced by submicrometre and nanosize Al 2O 3 via accumulative roll bonding

    , Article Materials Science and Technology (United Kingdom) ; 2012 , Pages 1233-1240 ; 02670836 (ISSN) Rezayat, M ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Aluminium matrix composites reinforced with submicrometre and nanosize Al 2O 3 particles were successfully manufactured in the form of sheets through eight cycles of accumulative roll bonding process. The mechanical properties of the produced composite are compared with accumulative roll bonded commercially pure aluminium. It is shown that only 1 vol.-% of submicrometre or nanosize alumina particles as reinforcement in the structure can significantly improve the yield and ultimate tensile strengths. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that particles have a random and uniform distribution in the matrix especially in the less volume fraction of alumina particles, and strong mechanical...

Supersolidus liquid phase sintering of Al6061/SiC metal matrix composites

    , Article Powder Metallurgy ; Volume 52, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 28-35 ; 00325899 (ISSN) Asgharzadeh, H ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The aim of the present work is to study the effect of reinforcement content and sintering temperature on the densification and microstructural development during sintering of Al6061/SiC composite compacts. Prealloyed Al6061 powder was mixed with various amounts of SiC particles up to 27 vol.-% and compacted at 350 MPa. Sintering was carried out in a dry nitrogen atmosphere at 580-620°C. It was shown that the presence of SiC particles retards the densification of the prealloyed powder during solid phase sintering and liquid phase sintering. This effect is particularly noticeable at SiC fractions higher than ∼9 vol.-%, at which continuous networks of the hard particles are formed. Increasing...

    Abstract
The growing industrial needs for the development of strong load-bearing materials by powder metallurgy and casting technologies has led to recent progress in the synthesis of in situ hybrid aluminium matrix composites (AMCs). Unlike their conventional counterparts, this class of engineering materials and their physicomechanical properties are sparsely investigated with no satisfactorily systematic approach and are not reviewed up to now. This is why providing an overview summarizing the formation mechanisms of in situ phases and mechanical properties of hybrid AMCs can systematically guide the research path in this field. The present review strives to categorize hybrid AMCs based on their...
