    Abstract
Novel types of highly swelling hydrogels were prepared by grafting crosslinked polyacrylic acid-co-poly-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (PAA-co-PAMPS) chains onto κ-carrageenan through a free radical polymerization method. Here, we propose a mechanism for κ-carrageenan-g-PAA-co-PAMPS formation and confirm the hydrogel structure using FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables (i.e. concentration of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), acrylic acid/-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AA/AMPS) weight ratio, ammonium persulfate (APS), κ-carrageenan, neutralization percent and reaction temperature) were systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with a maximum swelling...

Carrageenan-g-poly(acrylamide)/poly(vinylsulfonic acid, sodium salt) as a novel semi-IPN hydrogel: Synthesis, characterization, and swelling behavior

    , Article Polymer Engineering and Science ; Volume 47, Issue 9 , 2007 , Pages 1388-1395 ; 00323888 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Ghasemzadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
A semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel based on kappa-carrageenan (κC) and poly (vinylsulfonic acid, sodium salt) (PVSA) was prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) using methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. FTIR spectroscopy was used for confirming the structure of the final product. It was found that the chemical composition of the Semi-IPN hydrogel is equal to the initial homopolymers and monomer feed compositions. The swelling capacity of the hydrogel was shown to be affected by the MBA, APS, and AAm concentration as well as κC/PVSA weight ratio. The swelling behavior of the hydrogel was...

    Abstract
A novel superabsorbent hydrogel composite based on gelatin has been prepared by graft copolymerisation of acrylic acid and acrylamide in the presence of kaolin powder, using methylene-bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The synthetic variables affecting the water absorbency of the resulting superabsorbent composite were studied and the composite structure was confirmed using FT-IR spectroscopy. A new absorption band at 1728 cm-1 in the composite spectrum confirmed the presence of a kaolin-organic polymer linkage. The effect of kaolin content and MBA concentration showed that increasing these parameters decreased the water absorbency of the...

    Abstract
A novel superabsorbent composite system based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of kaolin powder using methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. The effect of reaction variables, such as MBA, AA, and APS concentration and CMC/kaolin ratio on the water absorbency of the composite were studied. Evidence of grafting and kaolin interaction was obtained by comparing the FT-IR spectra of the initial substrates with that of the superabsorbent composite. The results indicated that with increasing amount of kaolin, the swelling capacity was increased and then...

The hydrogel structures were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables, i.e. concentration of MBA and APS, AA/AAm weight ratio, and reaction time and temperature, was systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with swelling capacity as high as possible. The swelling behavior of these absorbent polymers...

Synthesis of dextran-graft-poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) gels as a new fluoride biosorbent was considered in this work. For this propose, the Taguchi experimental design method was used for optimizing the synthetic conditions of the gels to reach high level of fluoride absorbency. The effects of three main parameters including concentrations of monomer (hydroxyethyl methacrylate), crosslinking agent (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), and initiator (ammonium persulfate) on the final properties of the prepared gels were investigated. The proposed mechanism for grafting and chemically crosslinking reactions was proved with equilibrium water absorption, Fourier-transformed infrared, scanning...

Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. The equilibrium swelling capacities of synthesized hydrogels were evaluated...

Morphology transition control of polyaniline from nanotubes to nanospheres in a soft template method

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 64, Issue 1 , June , 2015 , Pages 88-95 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Pirhady Tavandashti, N ; Ghorbani, M ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2015
    Abstract
A soft template route is reported for the fabrication of polyaniline nanospheres via the oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of β-naphthalenesulfonic acid (β-NSA) as both surfactqant and dopant, and ammonium persulfate as oxidant at 2-5°C. Control over the morphology and size of the nanoparticles was achieved by changing the reaction medium via addition of an organic cosolvent (i.e. ethanol or ethylene glycol) and by controlling the concentrations of aniline and β-NSA and the molar ratio of β-NSA to aniline. By this means the size of the β-NSA-aniline micelles and the way that aniline monomer interacts with the micelles were controlled. In fact the lower dielectric constant...

    Abstract
Salep, known as a biodegradable polysaccharide, is hydrolyzed and used as both a reducing agent and stabilizer for graphene oxide (GO). The functionalized reduced graphene oxide (f-rGO) is homogenously dispersed in an aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). PVA based hydrogel and film nanocomposites are prepared and proposed as new biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. The mechanical properties of the film nanocomposites are investigated with varying content of f-rGO, glycerol and citric acid as a reinforcing agent, a plasticizer agent and a cross linking agent respectively. For the first time, chemically cross linked PVA hydrogels are synthesized using...

    Abstract
In this work, a novel method to synthesis of an acrylic superabsorbent hydrogel was reported. In the two stage hydrogel synthesis, first copolymerization reaction of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AM) monomers using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator was performed. In the second stage, the resulted copolymer was hydrolyzed to produce carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the polyacrylonitrile chains. The results from FTIR spectroscopy and the dark red-yellow color change show that the copolymerization, alkaline hydrolysis and crosslinking reactions have been do take place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verifies that the synthesized...
