    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference, 15 August 2010 through 18 August 2010 ; Volume 5 , 2010 , Pages 835-841 ; 9780791844137 (ISBN) Kargarnovin, M. H ; Jam, J. E ; Hashemian, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Modern Latticed composite materials whose high specific strength and stiffness are utilized in spacecraft and rocket structures to a sufficiently high extent are now widely used in primary airframe structures. In this work a comparison between squared latticed composite cylinder shells and the equivalent hollow cylinder with same weight, outer radius, length and material is done. An analytical equation is derived for natural frequency of square latticed composite shells. The first fifth modes are taken to be compared. The analytical and FEM results are shown and compared to each other. Also, as discussed, the squared lattice cylinder shell reaches to their natural frequencies easily than the...

    Abstract
Polymer-clay nanocomposites (PCNs) have received intensive attention in recent years because of their wide domain of applications. The present report provides an approach to calculate the thickness of nanometric interphase region in exfoliated PCNs based on the information about their macroscopic modulus and their nanoclay content. First, the concept of interphase region in PCNs is explained with an “algae explanation”. Then, a series of parametric finite element simulations together with analytical equations are employed to derive an explicit relationship between the interphase thickness and the PCN macroscopic modulus. The obtained analytical model considers the structural impact of the...

    Abstract
An energy-based ordinary differential equation is derived for a plastic wave propagating through a Taylor impact test specimen. Using the definition of true strain, an analytical equation is presented to calculate the strain rate across the plastic wave front. Having considered a Johnson-Cook plasticity model for the projectile material, the derived energy equation accompanied by a governing kinematics relation and the strain rate equation is numerically integrated to obtain the final deformed profile of the specimen. The results of the energy based model are then compared with those of the commonly used momentum-based approach as well as the existing experimental data in literature for...

    Abstract
In this paper, the artificial neural network has been applied to estimate the reaction rate of methanol dehydration in dimethyl ether synthesis. The multilayer feed forward neural network with three inputs and one output has been trained with different algorithms and different numbers of neurons in the hidden layer. Two thirds of all training data are used for training of the network and the rest are used for testing of the generalization of the network. The accuracy of the proposed model was found to agree well with the experimental results over a wide range of experimental conditions. The results clearly depict that the neural network is a powerful tool to estimate the reaction rate and...

Application of a mathematical method in calculation of the skin variation during a real field acidizing operation

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 192 , 2018 , Pages 829-839 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Shabani, A ; Jamshidi, S ; Jahangiri, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The efficiency of an acidizing operation is usually assessed through ordinary well testing methods. These methods are performed only after the acidizing operation, and it is difficult to monitor and evaluate real-time efficiency of acidizing operation. Understanding the performance of the acidizing during the service, by analysis of the acidizing data is a viable approach to this costly and challenging process. The estimation of the skin changes needs an appropriate mathematical method that can handle the main aspects of an acidizing operation. It is tedious to model a real acidizing operation due to the heterogeneity of the reservoir, an unknown reaction rate of acid in reservoir condition,...

    Abstract
Coiled carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) have increasingly become a vital factor in the new generation of nanodevices and energy-absorbing materials due to their outstanding properties. Here, the multiobjective optimization of CCNTs is applied to assess their mechanical properties. The best trade-off between conflicting mechanical properties (e.g., yield stress and yield strain) is demonstrated and the optimization of the geometry enables us to find the astonishing CCNTs with a stretchability of 400%. These structures have been recognized for the first time in the field. We derived several highly accurate analytical equations for the yield stress and yield strain by the implementation of...

    Abstract
A general model for superconducting synchronous machines in which the rotor can be considered as a magnetic or a nonmagnetic material is proposed and analytically investigated. Analytical equations for magnetic flux in different regions of the machine have been developed. Furthermore, nonlinear magnetization of the iron core is studied. In order to solve the equations in the case of the iron saturation, a reiterative algorithm is proposed. Finite-element simulation has also been performed to verify the equations and the proposed algorithm. The obtained analytical results show good agreement with finite-element method results

    Abstract
Although iron-cored superconducting machine has been recently proposed in many papers for its advantages over conventional air-cored structure such as less cost and less perpendicular magnetic component on HTS tapes it has not been studied analytically yet. This paper analytically investigates a general model for iron-cored superconducting synchronous machine. In this paper, analytical equations for magnetic flux in different regions of machine have been proposed along with an algorithm to solve the equations. The analytical equations will be then used to optimize the thickness of rotor iron in order to maximize the machine power density. Analytical and finite element simulation results will...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity ; Volume 25, Issue 1 , 2014 ; 10518223 (ISSN) Elhaminia, P ; Yazdanian, M ; Zolghadri, M. R ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An optimum electromagnetic design of a nonsalient magnetic-cored superconducting synchronous machine (SSM) is presented in this paper. First, self- and mutual inductances of a nonsalient magnetic-cored SSM are calculated using the magnetic energy method and analytical equations of magnetic vector potential. Then, a design approach for an SSM machine is proposed based on the inductances of the machine. An optimal design is finally performed using a genetic algorithm, considering the machine efficiency as an objective function. The finite-element method is utilized in each step to verify the analytical results

    Abstract
To ensure an optimized borehole in terms of heat capacity and cost-effectiveness, it is necessary to predict the heating performance of underground U-tube heat exchangers (boreholes) so that proper parameters such as length, diameter, material, etc. can be designed and selected. To this end, employing reliable equations is essential to predicting the heating performance of a borehole and also, to resolving the design issues. In this study, a single vertical U-tube borehole with a constant wall temperature is considered and analytical equations for temperature distribution in the surrounding ground around the borehole are evaluated based on one- and two-dimensional heat conduction,...

    , Article Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology ; Volume 83, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 85-93 ; 00022667 (ISSN) Rezaei, M ; Saghafi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe optical flow-based navigation of a very light fixed-wing aircraft in flight between obstacles. Design/methodology/approach - The optical flow information of two cameras mounted on the aircraft is used to detect the obstacle. It is assumed that the image processing has been completed and the optical flow vectors have been obtained beforehand. The optical flow is used to detect the obstacles and make a rapid turn manoeuvre for the aircraft. Findings - It is shown that using the optical flow feedback by itself is unable to give a rapid turn to the aircraft and its rate should be employed into the control law. Six degree-of-freedom flight...
