    Abstract
    A closed-form analytical computation of groundwater travel time (GWTT) for two-layer oceanic small island aquifers is developed assuming steady-state and sharp-interface conditions. The two-layer geology impacts on the GWTT are investigated using the developed analytical solution to achieve a greater transparency of such conceptualizations. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of geologic layering leads to large changes in the GWTT. Sensitivity analyses, using specified dimensionless parameters, are employed to assess the influences of hydraulic conductivity, recharge rate, upper layer thickness, and seawater/freshwater density difference parameters, which influence the GWTT.     Abstract
    Interlaminar stresses resulting from bending of rectangular cross-ply composite laminates are determined using a layer wise laminate theory. Two types of laminates are considered. First a fully simply supported laminate subjected to bi-directional bending is analyzed. The results obtained from this theory are compared with those of the published three-dimensional elasticity solutions to verify the validity and accuracy of the present theory. Then laminates with two edges simply supported and the other two edges free are examined. The results indicate the presence of significant interlaminar stresses near the free edges. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    An index for characterizing wettability of reservoir rocks is presented using slope analysis of spontaneous imbibition recovery data. The slope analysis is performed using the known exact analytical solution to infinite acting period of counter-current spontaneous imbibition. The proposed theoretically based wettability index offers some advantages over existing methods: (1) it is a better measure of the spontaneous imbibition potential of rock (because the magnitude is directly proportional to the imbibition rate); (2) there is no need for forced displacement data; (3) there is no need for waiting until the spontaneous imbibition process ceases completely; and (4) the data needed to run the...

    In this study, the homotopy analysis method is used to obtain an accurate analytical solution for fundamental non-linear natural frequency and corresponding displacement of tapered beams. Comparison between the obtained results and numerical solutions shows that the first-order approximation of present study leads to accurate solutions with a maximum relative error less than 0.5%

    Vibrations of electrostatically-Actuated microbeams are investigated. Effects of electrostatic actuation, axial stress and midplane stretching are considered in the model. Galerkin's decomposition method is utilized to convert the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation.     Abstract
    In this study, the nonlinear free vibration of conservative two degrees of freedom systems is analyzed using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The mathematical model of such systems is described by two second-order coupled differential equations with cubic nonlinearities. First, novel approximate analytical solutions for displacements and frequencies are established using HAM. Then, the homotopy Padé technique is applied to accelerate the convergence rate of the solutions.     In this study, an accurate analytical solution for Duffing equations with cubic and quintic nonlinearities is obtained using the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) and Homotopy Pade technique. Novel and accurate analytical solutions for the frequency and displacement are derived.     In this paper, a new relation is introduced that simplifies the determination of the Muskhelishvili's potential function in plane contact problems. The relation is Φ (z) = 1 / 2 [p (z) - i q (z)], which is correct for all uncoupled contact problems. The new relation is proved in a mathematical way and utilized to obtain the potential function in several contact problems.
