Abstract
A molecularly imprinted xerogel (MIX) for fentanyl was successfully prepared on the inner surface of a copper tube by sol-gel technology. Primarily, the tube was treated by self-assembly monolayers of 3-(mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane and then [3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-propyl]-trimethoxysilane was employed as a precursor for imprinting the template molecule in acidic conditions. During the sol-gel process influential parameters including volume and concentration of fentanyl were carefully investigated to obtain the most efficient and appropriate xerogel. In parallel, a non-imprinted xerogel (NIX) was synthesized in the absence of fentanyl. The extraction efficiencies achieved from MIX and NIX,...

Abstract
The anesthesia community has recently witnessed numerous advances in monitoring of the anesthetic state. This development has spurred a renewed interest in the automation of the clinical anesthesia. The absence of a precise model in biomedical field has motivated the authors to propose a novel approach capable of handling the uncertainties present in the model and moreover, to design a new approach which is subjective and can be adopted to patient specific requirements. In this regard a study has been conducted in this paper, in order to fit the intelligence of fuzzy controllers based on reinforcement learning in this clinical application. This study suggests that the chosen approach fits...

Abstract
The depth of anaesthesia estimation has been of a great interest in recent decades. In this paper we present a new methodology to quantify the depth of anaesthesia by quantifying the power-law correlations of the EEG signal. Extraction of useful information about the nonlinear dynamics of the brain during anaesthesia has been proposed with the optimum fractal scaling exponent. This optimum solution is based on the best domain of box sizes in the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) algorithm which have meaningful changes at different depth of anaesthesia. The experimental results confirm that our new algorithm on the raw EEG data can clearly discriminate between aware to moderate and deep...

Abstract
The effect of bisulfite (HSO3–) in nCaO2/Fe(III)/HSO3– system on improving HO• generation and trichloroethene (TCE) removal was innovatively reported. The enhancement mechanism of HSO3– for TCE removal in nCaO2/Fe(III)/HSO3– system was caused not only by the complexing and reducing effects on promoting the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II), but also due to the reaction with O2 in water to produce SO4–• for accelerating TCE degradation. A double effect of nCaO2 as an oxidant source to generate HO• and as a O2 source to promote SO4–• generation was revealed. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model of TCE removal was determined and 94.6% TCE degradation was achieved within 60 min at the...
Controlling the depth of anesthesia by using extended DMC

Abstract
Monitoring and controlling the depth of anesthesia is really important, since over dosing and under dosing can be dangerous for the patients. Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic models vastly used for describing the relationship between input anesthetic agents and output patient endpoint variables. As there is a large variety between the patients so for controlling the depth of anesthesia we need a controller which should be robust enough and also because the anesthesia process is nonlinear and contains time delay, among them all the proposed methods for controlling the depth of anesthesia, model predictive controllers (MPCs) are good choices. Extended dynamic matrix control (EDMC) can be...

Abstract
In this paper we investigate the modulation properties of high frequency EEG activities by delta waves during various depth of anesthesia. We show that slow and fast delta waves (0-2 Hz and 2-4 Hz respectively) and high frequency components of the EEG (8-20 Hz) are correlated with each other and there is a kind of phase locking between them that varies with depth of anesthesia. Our analyses show that maximum amplitudes of high frequency components of the EEG signal are appeared in different phases of slow and fast delta waves when the concentration of Desflurane and Propofol anesthetic agents varies in a patient. There are some slight differences in using slow and fast components of delta...

Abstract
Polyvinylpyrrolidone coated nano zero valent iron-copper (PVP-nZVI-Cu) bimetallic nanoparticles were successfully synthesized for dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) into non-toxic byproducts in the presence of persulfate oxidant. The average size of PVP-nZVI-Cu nanoparticles (3-25 nm) was smaller than PVP-nZVI (25-60 nm) and nZVI (50-90 nm) particles due to PVP role in the prevention of iron aggregation and agglomerations. The synthesized PVP-nZVI-Cu nanoparticles were used as an efficient persulfate (PS) activator to generate reactive oxygen species (ROSs) for the degradation of TCE. The complete removal of TCE (99.6%) was achieved in the presence of 0.4 g/L of PVP-nZVI-Cu...

Abstract
In this study, degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE), a chlorinated hydrocarbon, using starch supported Fe/Ni nanoparticles was investigated. The scanning electron microscope images showed applying water soluble starch as a stabilizer for the Fe/Ni nanoparticles tended to reduce agglomeration and discrete particle. Also the mean particle diameter reduced from about 70 nm (unsupported Fe/Ni nanoparticle) to about 30 nm. Effects of three key independent operating parameters including initial TCE concentration (10.0-300.0 mg L-1), initial pH (4.00-10.00) and Fe0 dosage (0.10-2.00) g L-1 on TCE dechlorination efficiency in 1 hour were analysed by employing response surface methodology (RSM)....

Abstract
A novel catalyst of sulfidated iron-nickel supported on biochar (S-FeNi@BC) was synthesized to activate persulfate (PS) for the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE). A number of techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, BET and EDS were employed to characterize S-FeNi@BC. The influence of sulfur to iron ratio (S/F) on TCE removal was investigated by batch experiments and a higher TCE removal (98.4%) was achieved at 0.22/1 ratio of S/F in the PS/S-FeNi@BC oxidation system. A dominant role in iron species conversion was noticed by the addition of sulfur in FeNi@BC system. Significant enhancement in recycling of the dissolved and surface Fe(II) was confirmed which contributed to the generation of...

Abstract
Carbonaceous materials (CMs) have been applied extensively for enhancing the catalytic performance of environmental catalysts, however, the self-catalytic mechanism of CMs for groundwater remediation is rarely investigated. Herein, we unveiled the catalytic ability of various CMs via Fe(III) reduction through polyvinyl alcohol-coated calcium peroxide nanoparticles (PVA@nCP) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal. Among selected CMs (graphite (G), biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC)), BC and AC showed enhancement of TCE removal of 89% and 98% via both adsorption and catalytic degradation. BET and SEM analyses showed a higher adsorption capacity of AC (27.8%) than others. The generation of...
