    Abstract
Maritime structures such as waterfronts, offshore platforms and hulks all face different maritime sediments. There are different methods to prevent the growth of organic and non-organic material on humid surfaces, but the utilization of antifouling paints has had the most efficiency. The growth of these maritime pollutions has been stopped on hulks by the antifouling paints. Ever since the nineteenth century, antifouling paints have been utilized with different mechanisms and the most important one was the TBT self-polishing paints that were banned in 2003 by the International Marine Organization (IMO) because of the high pollution it creates in the environment. There have been many efforts...

    Abstract
In order to compare the frictional resistance of three kinds of ship’s hull coatings (foul release, SPC copper, SPC TBT) in the unfouled conditions, the numerical studies have been made. Simulations have been carried out for different Reynolds numbers in the range of 2.85 × 106-5.5 × 106 based on the plate length and flow velocity. Antifouling coatings have larger mean roughness than foul release. The results have indicated that frictional resistance coefficient of foul release test plate is lower than SPC copper and SPC TBT test plates. The total resistance obtained by computational fluid dynamics has been compared with the experimental data and its good agreement has proven the ability of...

    Abstract
Recently, membrane fouling has been one of the most important issues in the field of membrane technology. In this regard, TiO2 nanoparticles blended with polymeric membranes have shown to improve fouling performance. In this study, a new PVDF/PAN/TiO2 ultrafiltration blend membrane was prepared via phase inversion by dispersing TiO2 nanoparticles in the PVDF/PAN casting solutions. The effect of different concentrations of TiO2 on the characteristics of membranes (i.e., morphology, hydrophilicity, permeation performance, and antifouling properties) was investigated. Results of scanning electron microscopy analysis showed the finger-like pores and macrovoids decrease due to the presence of...

    Abstract
In this study, modification of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration membranes with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticle addition was taken into consideration. The ZnO at five different weights was added to the polymeric solution, and the membranes were fabricated by the phase inversion method using water as a nonsolvent and PEG 6 kDa as a pore former additive. The results showed that the pure water flux of the modified membranes increased up to 3 wt% ZnO addition, which was the optimized amount of the nanoparticle addition in this study. Also, at 3 wt% ZnO addition, flux recovery ratio reached from 69% to above 90%, indicated that the nanocomposite membranes were less susceptible to be fouled....

    , Article RSC Advances ; Volume 6, Issue 74 , 2016 , Pages 70174-70185 ; 20462069 (ISSN) Zirehpour, A ; Rahimpour, A ; Khoshhal, S ; Firouzjaei, M. D ; Ghoreyshi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, a hydrophilic metal-organic framework (MOF) was applied to improve the performance of a cellulosic membrane for forward osmosis (FO) desalination application. The characterization results confirmed that the MOF particles existed within the matrix of the modified membrane. The MOF loading led to adjustment of the membranes in terms of overall porosity, pore inter-connectivity and hydrophilicity. These features caused an improvement in the pure water permeability (72%) and reduce the structural parameter of the modified membrane to 136 μm. The FO water flux of the modified membrane enhanced by about 180% compared to an unmodified membrane, without decreasing its selectivity. FO...

    Abstract
The current article discusses some unprecedented information about the improvement in forward osmosis (FO) performance of polyethersulfone/polyamide (PES/PA) membranes, mainly focused on water flux and selectivity along with resistance to fouling phenomenon; which itself is brought in by the introduction of pre-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 MOF nanoparticles. An investigation has been conducted on ZIF-8 nanoparticles surface with hydrophilicity feature to evaluate their potential for utilization in active polyamide layer of FO membranes for the first time, free from any decrease in water flux value (when hydrophobic ZIF-8 is exploited solely) and selectivity (when mSiO2 with...

    Abstract
In the current study, the prospect improvements on desalination and anti-fouling performance of polyamide (PA)-based TFN membranes modified with MIL-53-NH-Asp have been investigated. MIL-53-NH2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been treated through a single-step post-synthesis modification reaction to enhance the hydrophilicity feature and compatibility with the PA layer. Various concentrations of synthesized NPs were dispersed in an aqueous phase consisting m-phenylenediamine and 2,6-diaminopyridine monomers for incorporation in the PA rejection layer. Analysis data of fabricated membranes provide evidence of changes in their physico-chemical properties after NPs incorporation. In comparison with...
