Enhancing the structural performance of masonry arch bridges with ballast mats

    , Article Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities ; Volume 31, Issue 5 , 2017 ; 08873828 (ISSN) Mohammadzadeh, S ; Miri, A ; Nouri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A large portion of the railway bridge stock in many countries is comprised of masonry arch bridges. During recent years, more attention has been paid to the maintenance of such structures. Rehabilitation and retrofitting methods have been proposed to enhance the performance of masonry arch bridges and extend their service life. Because a large portion of forces exerted on such structures comes from the railway track and passing trains, structural elements are added to the track to reduce the forces transmitted to bridges. One such element is the ballast mat, which, according to suppliers, has a positive impact on the structural performance of the track. This paper tries to assess the effects...

Stability Analysis Rock Mass Abutment Karun 4 by Numerical Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalalian, Parisa (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Three dimensional analyses have been carried out for predicting the behavior of the jointed rock slope of the abutments of the bridge which is proposed to be constructed across the river Karun4 in Iran using 3DEC. The rock sloping at 500 to 600 are composed of highly jointed rock mass and the joint spacing and orientation are varying at different locations. Since 3DEC is a three-dimensional numerical code, utilizes a Lagrangian calculation scheme to model large movements and deformations of a blocky system, allows for modeling of large movements and rotations, including complete detachment of rigid or deformable discrete blocks has been utilized for the analysis. The analysis has been...

An innovative method of large space underground construction in soft and shallow ground using concrete arch pre-supporting system, CAPS method

    , Article ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress 2016, 22 April 2016 through 28 April 2016 ; Volume 1 , 2016 , Pages 548-557 ; 9781510822627 (ISBN) Sadaghiani, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Construction of underground structures in urban areas is a very challenging work. There are generally two methods of construction, an open cut-and-cover and underground method. To eliminate the subsurface and surface disturbance and street traffic problems, underground method is preferred. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces movements and deformation in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface. This is more pronounced in large space excavations. Generally pre-supporting system is used to control ground deformation and thus enhance its stability. In this paper an innovative pre-supporting system is presented. Concrete Arch Pre-supporting System (CAPS)...

    Abstract
The paper presents the experimental and analytical model analysis of a steel-girder arch bridge. The field test is carried out by ambient vibration testing under traffic excitations. Both the peak picking method in the frequency domain and the stochastic subspace identification method in the time domain are used for the output-only model identification. A good agreement in identified frequencies has been found between the two methods. It is further demonstrated that the stochastic subspace method provides better mode shapes. The three-dimensional finite element models are constructed and an analytical model analysis is then performed to generate natural frequencies and mode shapes in the...
