, Article Proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Applications of Advanced Technologies in Transportaion Engineering, Beijing, 26 May 2004 through 28 May 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 601-605 Hoseini, S. M. S ; Vaziri, M ; Shafahi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
There are many reported researches considering movement behavior of vehicles. In these studies the two basic types of movement of a vehicle are longitudinal movement, car following, and lateral movement, lane changing. Dependency between car following and lane changing models and the fact that many of drivers does not consider driving lanes, necessitate developing of models that combine the car following and lane changing without considering the driving lanes. Utilizing computer simulation, the work can also be applied to conditions where lane disciplines are strictly observed. Microscopic simulation models considering the movement of individual vehicles in a traffic stream can be...

A fuzzy ranking method for automated highway driving

    , Article 2004 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, Parma, 14 June 2004 through 17 June 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 218-221 Saniee, M ; Habibi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
Real-time, fuzzy rule-based guidance systems for autonomous vehicles on limited-access highways are investigated. The goal of these systems is to plan trajectories that are safe, while satisfying the driver's requests based on stochastic information about the vehicle's state and the surrounding traffic. This paper presented a new method to implement an automated highway driving behaviour. The main advantage of the suggested system is its well-defined structure. To test the designed system, a simulation tool is implemented. By using the described tool, we can analyse the operation of the implemented decision making system in a simulated highway. Results show an acceptable performance of the...

Reducing occupant injury in frontal crashes for a low-floor city bus

    , Article 2005 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2005, Orlando, FL, 5 November 2005 through 11 November 2005 ; Volume 2006 , 2006 , Pages 113-120 Sahraei Esfahani, E ; Darvish, K ; Parnianpour, M ; Bateni, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this research, the effect of beam buckling in a predefined direction is used to reduce occupant injuries in frontal crashes of an ultra-low-floor (ULF) city bus. In ULF buses, the floor structure consists of several longitudinal long beams, which in case of a frontal crash may buckle due to the axial impact. The direction of rotational acceleration of the driver seat due to buckling is highly affected by the position of the driver seat. A finite element model of an ULF bus was developed using LS-Dyna. The driver model, a Hybrid III 50 th male dummy with deformable jacket and abdomen, was restrained to the seat with a 3-point belt. An Elastic-Plastic material model was used for the bus...

Aggressive driving: Do driving overconfidence and aggressive thoughts behind the wheel, drive professionals off the road?

    , Article Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour ; Volume 79 , 2021 , Pages 170-184 ; 13698478 (ISSN) Mohammadpour, S. I ; Nassiri, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Aggressive driving has emerged as one of the most studied behaviors in the traffic psychology context due to its association with odds of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and especially fatal ones. Nevertheless, behavioral (aggression) and affective (anger) aspects of aggressive driving have been deeply studied; its cognitive part hasn't gained much attention; However, its role in understanding the process of aggression and designing interventions couldn't be neglected. This research investigated the contribution of overconfidence (as the driver's cognitive bias), aggressive thoughts, driver's aggression, and risk perception in driver's performance and the number of self-reported active...

Weighing criteria and prioritizing strategies to reduce motorcycle-related injuries using combination of fuzzy topsis and ahp methods

    Abstract
Unsafe driving behavior and hazardous environmental conditions lead lo traffic crashes and injuries. The annual rale of road crashes in Iran is twenty times higher than the world's average. Motorcycle crashes have higher fatality rates than other motor vehicle crashes, and they exert psychological pressure on the communities and have adverse economic consequences for the societies. This paper analyzes Tehran's motorcycle crash data and investigates the effective underlying factors. Seven strategies were presented and prioritized to reduce the number and severity of motorcycle crashes. The fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) combined with the...

    Path-differentiated pricing in congestion mitigation

    , Article Transportation Research Part B: Methodological ; Volume 80 , October , 2015 , Pages 202-219 ; 01912615 (ISSN) Zangui, M ; Aashtiani, H. Z ; Lawphongpanich, S ; Yin, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Instead of charging tolls on individual links, this paper considers doing the same on paths. Path and link tolls are "valid" if they encourage motorists to use routes that collectively lead to a target distribution, e.g., one that minimizes travel delay. Because the numbers of valid link and path tolls are typically infinite, an objective in pricing tolls is to find a set of valid tolls that yields the least revenue to lessen the financial burden on motorists.Path tolls are generally more flexible than link tolls and this paper shows that this flexibility can substantially reduce the financial burden on motorists. Additionally, valid path tolls yielding the least revenue possess...

Application of fuzzy theory for traffic assignment

    , Article 18th IASTED International Conference on Modelling and Simulation, MS 2007, Montreal, QC, 30 May 2007 through 1 June 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 604-608 ; 10218181 (ISSN); 9780889866638 (ISBN) Shafahi, Y ; Ramezani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Traffic assignment is one of the primary steps in the urban transportation planning process. There are several parameters that affect on drivers route choice. These factors arenot shown completely in the classic traffic assignment techniques so, these methodes donot have acceptable accuracy in the link volume estimating. Therefore many researchers have been tried to use fuzzy set theory in order to gain more precise approximation in traffic assignment. In this paper, we intend to propose a new fuzzy assignment model which has more flexibility relarive to driver behavior characteristics. At first, our assumptions are cited and then we illustrate how the membership function of the travel time...

    , Article ASME 2017 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference, DSCC 2017, 11 October 2017 through 13 October 2017 ; Volume 1 , 2017 ; 9780791858271 (ISBN) Merat, K ; Abbaszadeh Chekan, J ; Salarieh, H ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the proposed study, a Hybrid Model Predictive Controller is introduced for cruise control of an automobile model. The presented model consists of the engine, the gearbox, and the transmission dynamics, where the aerodynamics force and elastic friction between the tires and road are taken into account. Through Piecewise Linearization of nonlinearities in the system; (torque)-(throttle)-(angular velocity) of engine and (aerodynamic drag force)-(automobile velocity), a comprehensive piecewise linear model for the system is obtained. Then combined with the switch and shift between engaged gears in gearbox, the Piecewise Affine (PWA) model for the vehicle dynamics is acquired. As far as the...

    Abstract
A dynamic model of an above-knee prosthesis during the complete gait cycle was developed. The model was based on a two-dimensional multi-body mechanical system and included a hydraulic and an elastic controller for the knee and a kinematical driver controller for the prosthetic ankle. The equations of motion were driven using Lagrange method. Simulation of the foot contact was conducted using a two-point penetration contact model. The knee elastic and hydraulic controller units, the knee extension stop, and the kinematical driver controller of the ankle were represented by a spring and a dashpot, a nonlinear spring, and a torsional spring-damper within a standard prosthetic configuration....
