Numerical Modeling of the Behavior of Base Plates with Various Degrees of Rigidity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafieifar, Mohamad Reza (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Connections have a crucial role in the behavior of every structure. Amongst various types of connections used in steel structures are those used to connect the columns to the foundations, namely Base Plates. As other types of connections, base plates control the behavior of the structure in various respects including affecting the effective length of columns. The main task of any base plate is to distribute the forces of the column on the foundation in such a manner that the stresses in concrete are below their allowable values. Different configurations, with or without various attachments, are used for designing the base plates hence achieving various types of behavior with various levels...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology baygi, Sajjad (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Base plates as the connecting components of steel structures to their foundations, have a crucial role in the behavior of these structures. In order to limit the thickness of base plates hence their cost within reasonable values, various types of attachments (stiffeners) are normally added to them. In this project 6 different configurations, Models, for the base plate and its attachments were considered and studied through finite element analysis. Each Model was studied under the combination of biaxial moments and a range of compressive loads including 0, 0.05 P/Py, 0.10 P/Py and 0.15 P/Py, where Py is the plastic load of the column. The moment-rotation curves of all models under various...

On the Parametric Analysis of Structural Response of Base Plate Connections through FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khodaei, Sina (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Base plate is one of the important and sensitive elements of a structure which roles as a connector of force and moment in column to foundation joint and prevents from stress concentration in the joint area. As until now there has been several numerical and experimental researches conducted about base plate connections, but in practice for design, base plate is considered as a cantilever beam which undertakes compressive force and bending moment. In this method of design many important factors such as separation and deflection of base plate, interaction of base plate with bolts and foundation aren’t taken into consideration. Therefore there is an urgent need to design base plates considering...

Analysis and Modeling of Base Plates Under the Effect of Different Loads

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbaspour, Hamid (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In steel structured buildings the connection of columns to foundations is of practical significance. This connection customarily is performed by a base plate, which is connected to the foundation with bolts. The columns and base plates are usually prepared separately, and later are welded together by contractors. Due to the errors in the process of fabrication, these plates are proposed with larger dimensions than those suggested by the designers. However, it is believed that the utilization of stiffeners, which are welded to the columns in a perpendicular state, reduces the stress field inside the base plates significantly. Therefore, by use of stiffeners the thickness of base plates can be...

Investigating of the Behavior of the Column Base Plate with Eccentirisity Using FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moeini, Amin (Author) ; Vafaei, Abolhassan (Supervisor) ; Mofid, massoud (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Base plate is one of the crucial elements in steel structures which transfer force from column to foundation and also prevent stress concentration in jointing area between them. For investigating the behavior of base plate under different caseloads such as axial, transverse and earthquake loads, it is necessary to consider all the involved elements including column, base plate, foundation, anchor rods and also interaction between these elements. In this study the connection between column and base plate, base plate and foundation are analyzed thoroughly. The behavior of base plate with a box type column with and without stiffener under the static loads is analyzed using finite element...

Parametric analyses on the initial stiffness of the SHS column base plate connections using FEM

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 34 , 2012 , Pages 363-370 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Khodaie, S ; Mohamadi-shooreh, M. R ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Bolted Column Base Plate (BCBP) connections are widely used to connect steel columns to the concrete foundations. This paper conducts a parametric study on the initial stiffness of bolted base plate with Square Hollow Section (SHS) column connection, through an extended 3-D Finite Element Modeling (FEM). Different features of the connection such as material behavior, geometric details, typical contact phenomena and large displacements are also considered in the modeling. A comparison between experimental test and FEM is carried out to illustrate the ability of the numerical method to simulate the connection behavior. An analytical explanation on the initial stiffness of the connection is...

Numerical Modeling of the Behavior of Base Plates with Various Degrees of Rigidity Under Cyclic Loads

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahimi, Javad (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Due to the important role of base plates, both in transferring forces from the structure to the foundation, and also in transferring vibrations from soil to the structure, it is necessary to have sufficient knowledge on their behaviour and performance under monotonic and cyclic loading regimes. In fact, the behaviour of the supports of any structure cannot be identified without identifying the behaviour of its base plates. Numerous configurations with/without various types of attachments have been proposed and used for base plates. In this work, altogether six commonly-used types of base plates were studied and their behaviour under monotonic and cyclic loadings was obtained using commercial...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mollazeinal, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Maleki, Shervin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important connections in a structure is the column base plate connection. In structures subjected to earthquake loading, this connection is usually where a plastic hinge can develop and therefore is of utmost importance. In this paper, behavior of base plates under monotonic and cyclic loading is investigated. The failure modes, that are one of the fundamental targets in this study include base plate yielding, anchor bolt yielding and also failure arising due to crushing of concrete. A parametric study is conducted using nonlinear finite element analysis. Parametes such as plate thickness, anchor bolt size and location and concrete strength are considered. The desired...

    Abstract
In this study, the thermal cycles and the grain structure in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) are predicted. At the first stage, a combined heat transfer and fluid flow model is employed to assess the temperature fields during and after welding of 304 stainless steel and then, the evolution of grain structure is conducted using the predicted temperature distribution and an analytical model of grain growth. The grain sizes of the CGHAZ (coarse grain heat affected zone) achieved from the model are basically in agreement with those obtained from experimental measurement under different heat inputs in the range of 0.33-1.07 MJ/m. Both the experimental data and the calculated results show that...
