Hydrodynamic Investigation of Tapered-in Fluidization and Comparison with Tapered-out Fluidized Beds and Cylindrical Fluidized Beds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology panjehshahin, Ahmad (Author) ; Molaei, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tapered-in fluidized beds, have unique dynamic characteristics compared to cylindrical fluidized beds, because of the velocity gradient in the axial direction. Therefore in the recent years, tapered fluidized beds were widely used in various processes such as biochemical reactions, biological, crystallization, gasification, liquefaction, etc. In this study, a two-dimensional gas-solid model using Eulerian-Eulerian approach along with the kinetic theory of granular solid in a tapered-in fluidized bed was applied. Moreover, the tapered-in fluidized beds were compared with the tapered-out fluidized beds and cylindrical fluidized beds in order to investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of the...

    Abstract
Numerical study of flow through random packing of non-overlapping spheres in a cylindrical geometry is investigated. Dimensionless pressure drop has been studied for a fluid through the porous media at moderate Reynolds numbers (based on pore permeability and interstitial fluid velocity), and numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensional porous packed bed illustrated in excellent agreement with those reported by Macdonald [1979] in the range of Reynolds number studied. The results compare to the previous work (Soleymani et al., 2002) show more accurate conclusion because the problem of channeling in a duct geometry. By injection of solute into the system, the...

Modeling and Simulation Study of Tapered Fluidized-Bed Reactors with Gas Reduction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Askaripour, Hossein (Author) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Existence of a velocity gradient in the axial direction in tapered fluidized beds causes unique dynamic characteristics of this kind of beds relative to cylindrical fluidized beds. Due to this characteristic, fluidized bed reactors with inclined walls have found a wide application in many industrial processes. In this study, tapered-¬in and tapered-¬out fluidized bed reactors have been simulated using Eulerian-¬Eulerian approach and applying the Kinetic Theory of Granular Flows (KTGF) for solid particles to investigate the bed behavior in the presence of two kinds of chemical reaction with gas volume reduction and gas volume increase. The results of hydrodynamic simulations show that the...

Effects of initial static bed height on fractional conversion and bed pressure drop in tapered-in and tapered-out fluidized bed reactors

    Abstract
In this article, a standard 2D Two-Fluid Model (TFM) closed by the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) has been applied to simulate the behavior of tapered-in and tapered-out fluidized bed reactors. In this regard, two types of chemical reactions with gas volume reduction and increase were considered to investigate the effects of initial static bed height on the fractional conversion and bed pressure drop. To validate the CFD model predictions, the results of hydrodynamic simulations concerning bed pressure drop and bed expansion ratio were compared against experimental data reported in the literature and excellent agreement was observed. The obtained simulation results clearly indicate...

Comparison of conventional and spherical reactor for the industrial auto-thermal reforming of methane to maximize synthesis gas and minimize CO2

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 42, Issue 31 , 2017 , Pages 19798-19809 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Shahhosseini, H. R ; Saeidi, S ; Najari, S ; Gallucci, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Auto-thermal reforming (ATR), a combination of exothermic partial oxidation and endothermic steam reforming of methane, is an important process to produce syngas for petrochemical industries. In a commercial ATR unit, tubular fixed bed reactors are typically used. Pressure drop across the tube, high manufacturing costs, and low production capacity are some disadvantages of these reactors. The main propose of this study is to offer an optimized radial flow, spherical packed bed reactor as a promising alternative for overcoming the drawbacks of conventional tubular reactors. In the current research, a one dimensional pseudo-homogeneous model based on mass, energy, and momentum balances is...

Two-dimensional CFD simulation of chemical reactions in tapered-in and tapered-out fluidized bed reactors

    Abstract
This article presents a simulation study of tapered-in and tapered-out fluidized bed reactors to investigate the influences of apex angle on the fractional conversion and the pressure drop of the fluidized beds in the presence of two types of chemical reaction with gas volume increase and reduction. The 2D behavior of tapered-in and -out fluidized beds was also compared with a columnar one from fractional conversion and bed pressure drop point of views. To validate the simulation results, the numerical predictions for the expansion ratio and the pressure drop of a tapered fluidized bed were compared with experimental data and good agreement was observed. The obtained simulation results...
