    Abstract
In this paper, we divide the imaging geometry of a photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) structure that have a circular geometry and have focused transducers of positive or negative focus, into different zones of varying resolution. With using the presented analysis, it is possible to find the maximum range in which the system resolution is at its best value, according to the device specifications. The following equations are used to find the blind spot angles of the system for each source point inside the chamber. These are important for two reasons: the first is that the user can calculate the range in which the imaging system has the best quality by entering the specifications of his...

A k-NN method for lung cancer prognosis with the use of a genetic algorithm for feature selection

    Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the most common diseases for human beings everywhere throughout the world. Early identification of this disease is the main conceivable approach to enhance the possibility of patients’ survival. In this paper, a k-Nearest-Neighbors technique, for which a genetic algorithm is applied for the efficient feature selection to reduce the dataset dimensions and enhance the classifier pace, is employed for diagnosing the stage of patients’ disease. To improve the accuracy of the proposed algorithm, the best value for k is determined using an experimental procedure. The implementation of the proposed approach on a lung cancer database reveals 100% accuracy. This implies that one...

Replacement-repair policy based on a simulation model for multi-state deteriorating products under warranty

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 E , 2009 , Pages 26-35 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Eshraghnia Jahromi, A ; Vahdani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this paper, a replacement-repair model is developed to study a warranty servicing policy for a class of multi-state deteriorating and repairable products, based on a computer simulation analysis. In each working state there is a determined probability for transition to each of the subsequent states, given that it has made a transition out of that state. There are two parameters that determine the manufacturer's decision to repair or replace a failed item, assuming that the buyer's claim is valid; the deterioration degree of the item and the length of the residual warranty period. Beside these two parameters, other inputs to the model are: the number of working and failure states, the...

Coanda surface geometry optimization for multi-directional co-flow fluidic thrust vectoring

, Article Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo: Power for Land, Sea, and Air ; Volume 5 , 2009 , Pages 183-189 ; 9780791848869 (ISBN) Saghafi, F ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The performance of Co-flow fluidic thrust vectoring is a function of secondary flow characteristics and the fluidic nozzle geometry. In terms of nozzle geometry, wall shape and the secondary slot aspect ratio are the main parameters that control the vector angle. The present study aims to find a high quality wall shape to achieve the best thrust vectoring performance, which is characterized by the maximum thrust deflection angle with respect to the injected secondary air. A 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is employed to investigate the flow characteristics in thrust vectoring system. This model is validated using experimental data collected from the deflection of exhaust gases of...
