    Abstract
Master curves of asphalt binders and mixtures have been traditionally used to evaluate their rheological behavior in the linear viscoelastic range. Different analytical models are available to describe the master curves of bituminous binders and mixtures. No models are currently considered universal for all modeling purposes. In this research, the general structure and capabilities of some of the most commonly used analytical models were investigated. Then, based on the patterns of phase angle master curves of ten neat and modified asphalt binders, four groups of master curve shapes were defined. The goodness of fit of the models for the different groups of master curves was used to develop...

Aging characteristics of neat and modified asphalt binders based on rheological evaluations at intermediate temperatures

    Abstract
This study examined the aging of neat and modified binders at intermediate temperatures. The neat binder was modified using two crumb rubber (CR) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) contents. The linear and non-linear rheological test results and parameters exhibited different aging susceptibilities for each binder. A new aging/cracking parameter is introduced based on the Christen-Anderson model. The limiting values are defined to assess cracking potential after PAV aging. The SBS binders were highly sensitive to aging, but the addition of sulfur noticeably improved their rheological and cracking properties and aging resistance. Among the studied parameters, four were deemed suitable to...

Evaluation of the performance and temperature susceptibility of gilsonite- and SBS-modified asphalt binders

    Abstract
This study investigated the effect of gilsonite and Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) as asphalt binder modifiers on the physical and rheological properties of asphalt binders. For this, binder tests such as penetration test, softening point, rotational viscosity (RV), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) were conducted on the neat and modified binders. The effect of gilsonite and SBS on the binder temperature susceptibility was also investigated by measuring Penetration Index (PI), Activation Energy (AE) and Viscosity-Temperature Susceptibility (VTS) of all the study binders. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) test was directed toward investigation of...
