    Abstract
Two carbon composite materials were prepared by mixing avocado biochar and methyl polysiloxane (MK). Firstly, MK was dissolved in ethanol, and then the biochar was added at different times. In sample 1 (R1), the time of adding biochar was immediately after dissolving MK in ethanol, and in sample 2 (R2), after 48 h of MK dissolved in ethanol. The samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements obtaining specific surface areas (SBET) of 115 m2 g−1 (R1) and 580 m2 g−1 (R2). The adsorbents were further characterized using scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, adsorption of vapors of n-heptane and water, thermal analysis, Bohem titration, pHpzc, and...

Physical Modeling of Bioremediation of Gasoline Spill in the Vadose Zone

    Abstract
Oil pollutants are among the important sources of pollution in countries with oil and gas industries such as Iran. Soil pollution by these pollutants is one of the environmental issues and hazards. All kinds of organic and inorganic pollutants in the soil may penetrate the underground water or enter the atmosphere in the form of gas, which respectively enters the food chain through absorption by plants or enter the body of living organisms through breathing. They include humans, which are a threat to the health and life of living beings. For example, many of these pollutions cause diseases such as cancer, suppression of the body's immune system, or even obesity; therefore, it is necessary to...

Reduction of Organic Dyes in Water Using MOFS and Their Composites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Alireza (Author) ; Kazemeini, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Sadjadi, Samahe (Co-Supervisor) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
A triple photocatalytic composite of biochar, metal-organic framework and phosphomolybdic acid was prepared through solvothermal treatment of iron (III) chloride hexahydrate, terephthalic acid, lavandulifolia-derived biochar and phosphomolybdic acid. The composite was thoroughly characterized and utilized for photodegradation of organic dyes under visible light irradiation. Investigations of reaction variables confirmed that, the highest yield of 96.2% for a cationic Rhodamine-B (RhB) dye was achieved at ambient temperature when using 0.07 g of catalyst at pH of 7 and a dye concentration of 10 ppm. The activity of the composite was superior compared to its individual components implying...

Preparation of Herbal Biomass as Extractive Phases for Trace Determination of Pesticides

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Keikavousi Behbahan, Arnavaz (Author) ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor) ; Mahdavi, Vahideh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main approach of this thesis is to study the performance and efficiency of agricultural biomass derived extractive phases in sample preparation methods. In this regard, different types of agricultural biomasses and various important factors in the production of biochar from biomass were studied by two physical and chemical methods. Accordingly, different types of biochars have been made and applied in different extraction setups along with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-electron capture (GC-ECD) to detect agricultural pesticides. Also, validated developed methods were used to investigate the safety of some highly...

Enhancement in reactivity via sulfidation of FeNi@BC for efficient removal of trichloroethylene: Insight mechanism and the role of reactive oxygen species

    , Article Science of the Total Environment ; Volume 794 , 2021 ; 00489697 (ISSN) Shan, A ; Idrees, A ; Zaman, W. Q ; Abbas, Z ; Farooq, U ; Ali, M ; Yang, R ; Zeng, G ; Danish, M ; Gu, X ; Lyu, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A novel catalyst of sulfidated iron-nickel supported on biochar (S-FeNi@BC) was synthesized to activate persulfate (PS) for the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE). A number of techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, BET and EDS were employed to characterize S-FeNi@BC. The influence of sulfur to iron ratio (S/F) on TCE removal was investigated by batch experiments and a higher TCE removal (98.4%) was achieved at 0.22/1 ratio of S/F in the PS/S-FeNi@BC oxidation system. A dominant role in iron species conversion was noticed by the addition of sulfur in FeNi@BC system. Significant enhancement in recycling of the dissolved and surface Fe(II) was confirmed which contributed to the generation of...

Preparation and evaluation of various banana-based biochars together with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for determination of diverse pesticides in fruiting vegetables

    , Article Food Chemistry ; Volume 360 , 2021 ; 03088146 (ISSN) Keikavousi Behbahan, A ; Mahdavi, V ; Roustaei, Z ; Bagheri, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Biomass, originates from plant- or animal-based materials with a huge potential to be reused. Here we report a simple, rapid and inexpensive method for preparation of modified biochars derived from the banana peel followed by their applications in pipette-tip micro solid-phase extraction (PT-µSPE). Due to the contribution of various effective parameters on modification of banana peel biochars (BPBs), Taguchi design was used to optimize activation temperature, activation repetition, treatment material and impregnation ratio. Efficiency of the prepared BPBs were studied by extraction of twelve various pesticides, as model analytes with an extended range of log P values (1.4–5.7), followed by...

Unveiling the catalytic ability of carbonaceous materials in Fenton-like reaction by controlled-release CaO2 nanoparticles for trichloroethylene degradation

    Abstract
Carbonaceous materials (CMs) have been applied extensively for enhancing the catalytic performance of environmental catalysts, however, the self-catalytic mechanism of CMs for groundwater remediation is rarely investigated. Herein, we unveiled the catalytic ability of various CMs via Fe(III) reduction through polyvinyl alcohol-coated calcium peroxide nanoparticles (PVA@nCP) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal. Among selected CMs (graphite (G), biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC)), BC and AC showed enhancement of TCE removal of 89% and 98% via both adsorption and catalytic degradation. BET and SEM analyses showed a higher adsorption capacity of AC (27.8%) than others. The generation of...
