    Abstract
The effect of the superconductivity transition on the thermal crosstalk in YBa 2Cu 3O 7-x, edge-transition bolometer arrays is investigated for DC to midrange modulation frequency infrared radiation. The bolometers in the arrays were designed with various distances on SrTiO 3 (100) substrates. We have observed a change in the thermal crosstalk between neighbor devices through the superconductivity transition temperature range. Superconductivity transition dependence of the thermal coupling between the devices was measured by utilizing the thermal conductance measurement methods developed for the bulk material. The knee points in the magnitude of the response versus modulation frequency...

Substrate and device pattern dependence of the thermal crosstalk in y Ba 2Cu 3O 7-δ transition edge bolometer arrays

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity ; Volume 16, Issue 4 , 2006 , Pages 1953-1958 ; 10518223 (ISSN) Bozbey, A ; Fardmanesh, M ; Schubert, J ; Banzet, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Using YBa 2Cu 3O 7-δ (YBCO) thin films, pulsed laser deposited on 1-mm-thick LaAlO 3 or SrTiO 3 substrates, we made 4 × 1 pixel arrays of transition edge bolometers with separations between neighboring pixels ranging from 40 μm to 170 μm for testing purposes. We investigated the effects of the YBCO film thickness (200 and 400 nm), substrate material, and back-etching of the substrate, on the crosstalk between the pixels of the arrays. The investigation was based on the analysis of the voltage response of the dc current biased bolometers versus the modulation frequency of a near-infrared laser source. We observed that the bolometer arrays made of 400-nm-thick films had less interpixel thermal...

    Abstract
Detectivity optimization of large-area freestanding-type YBCO superconducting bolometric detectors is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The effect of the device thermal parameters on the theoretical total noise-equivalent power based on background radiation, thermal fluctuation, and Johnson noise is considered. By analytical optimization of the total noise-equivalent power (NEP) of the device with respect to the thermal parameters and radiation modulation frequency, the maximum sensitivity and optimal thermal parameters of the bolometric detector are obtained. Relating device thermal parameters to the special case of the large substrate dimensions, the optimum device geometry is...

    Abstract
We present an analytical thermal model to explain the crosstalk in YBCO edge-transition bolometer arrays. The verification of the model was tested on sample array devices made of 200 and 400 nm YBCO films on LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates. The model presented was able to explain the effects of the various physical parameters of the devices, such as the film thickness, operating temperature, and the device separation, which cause different response behaviours based on the variation of the related thermal crosstalk characteristics. In addition, the model is valid above the crosstalk-free modulation frequencies, where the effects of the thermal crosstalk on the response of the devices are...

    Abstract
A bolometer is a device for measuring electromagnetic waves, which uses the heating of a material with variable resistance to temperature. Due to the existing limitations and quality improvement, superconducting materials are used in the manufacture of these devices. In this dissertation, the construction and improvement of the components of a high temperature transient edge superconducting radiometer with terahertz detection capability is discussed. In the construction of these detectors, the superconducting material YBa2Cu3O7-x is used as a thermal sensor with a transition temperature of 93.5K. In order to characterize these detectors, an automatic system for measuring the voltage response...

    Abstract
The effect of substrate thickness and its Debye temperature on the bolometric response of the freestanding-membrane type of superconductor transition-edge detectors is investigated. The investigation is based on the calculation of the variation of the specific heat per unit volume and the heat conductivity using the finite-size scaling method for different Debye temperatures and micron size thickness of substrate. We also calculated the heat capacity and time constant for various materials with Debye temperatures in the range of 600-1400 K. The calculated results are compared with previously reported response values obtained theoretically and experimentally for the thermal-based infrared...

    Abstract
The effect on the thermal parameters of superconducting transition-edge bolometers produced on a single crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) substrate with and without a CeO2 buffer layer was investigated. Metal-organic deposition was used to deposit the 20-nm CeO2 buffer layer, whereas RF magnetron sputtering was applied to fabricate 150-nm-thick superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin film. The critical transition temperature for both of the YBCO films was 90 K, and the transition width was ∼1.9 K. The bolometers fabricated from these samples were characterized with respect to the voltage phase and amplitude responses, and the results were compared with that of simulations conducted by applying a...

    Abstract
Bolometric response and noise characteristics of YBCO superconductor transition edge IR detectors with relatively sharp transition and its resulting detectivity are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The magnitude of response of a fabricated device was obtained for different bias currents and modulation frequencies. Also dependency of intrinsic noise of the device on the bias current in the vicinity of critical temperature was studied for various values of chopping frequencies. Using the measured and calculated bolometric response and noise characteristics, we found and analyzed the device detectivity versus frequency for different bias currents. The detectivity versus...

    Abstract
In this thesis, we are focusing on the heat transport mechanism in one of the most applicable kinds of superconducting detectors called, YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) transition-edge bolometer. The Time Domain Thermoreflectance (TDTR) method is described as a tool for investigating the thermal boundary conductance and thermal conductivity of the materials, and the measured thermal conductivity of our YBCO films is reported here. Although some recent papers have shown a dependence of the thermal conductivity of the YBCO films to their thickness, our results on many samples with different substrates didn’t show the reported thickness dependency and we have obtained the thermal conductivity of the YBCO...

Design and Fabrication of a High Detectivity HTS Bolometer and Investigation of Geometrical Effects on its Responsivity and Detectivity

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Moftakharzadeh, Ali (Author) ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Detectors play an important role in almost all scientific experiments and the results of the experiment highly depend on the performance of the applied detector (e.g. the detector detectivity, noise, detection threshold, time constant, …). In general a detector is defined as a device which transforms a quantity (e.g. pressure, energy, photon, …) to another one(e.g. mechanical displacement, electrical current, voltage, …). High temperature superconductor transition edge bolometers (TEB) are one of the most promising devices that due to the wavelength independent nature of their optical response can be used to detect the electromagnetic radiation over the whole spectrum from x-ray to the far...

    Abstract
We present a new approach for analytical modeling and calculating the response of high-Tc superconductive transition edge sensors in a wide range of modulation frequencies for different configurations of the film patterns. The method used here is based on solving the heat transfer differential equation for two different time varying heat sources, which are related to the absorbed radiated power. The used method employs two-dimensional boundary conditions for describing meander-line patterned devices. The results from the applied method are in better agreement with those obtained from the frequency response measurements of the characterized samples, than the previously developed models. In...

    Abstract
We report on the response of a monolithic high Tc transition-edge bolometer to about 3 mmWave for the first time. The detector structure consisting of 400-nm YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO) film on buffered yttria stabilized zirconia substrate without any coupled antenna, shows bolometric type responsivity to the 3-mmWave radiation at its transition temperature. The YBCO thin film Ce0.9La0.1O2 buffer layer are both fabricated by the metal-organic deposition method. The meander line pattern of the bolometer is designed for obtaining maximum absorption and responsivity possible when the polarized radiation of the source is aligned with the pattern. Meander lines are 50 micrometers wide and 1.5-mm long. We...

    Abstract
Improving the sensitivity and the time response of the superconducting transition edge detectors as one of the most promising technologies for millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelength radiation power detection is essential. Having an accurate 3D model for these detectors enables us to design faster detectors with higher sensitivity and detectivity. In this paper, we report on a 3-dimensional finite element model of a current biased superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) transition-edge detector fabricated by a low-cost Metal-Organic deposition method. The obtained simulation results are in good agreement with the measured response of the detectors. Also, as the simulation results suggest,...

    Abstract
We present the results of a bolometric transition-edge sensor made of a high-Tc superconductor YBCO thin film prepared by fluorine-free metal-organic deposition. The structure of the films was characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and the superconducting properties were determined by R-T measurements. The applicability of the resulting film as an infrared sensor is reported here. The optical response in the range of near infrared and the noise characteristics of the patterned bolometer are measured and analyzed. The dependence of device sensitivity on the bias current and modulation frequency is also investigated. As it is presented in this paper, the results...
