    Abstract
Co-based FSX-414 superalloy is especially used for first-stage nozzles of gas turbines. Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding has potential as repair process for these nozzles. In this study, homogenization of TLP-bonded FSX-414 superalloy at optimum bonding condition (1150 °C/5 min) was conducted at 1175, 1200, and 1225 °C for 1, 3, and 6 h. Homogenization at 1175 °C/1 h had no effect on removing the diffusion-affected zone (DAZ) phases. Increasing the time to 6 h was effective in removing DAZ phases and boride phases formed due to liquefaction, but compositional homogenization was not complete. Homogenization at 1200 °C for 1 h caused boride phases to form adjacent to the joint and in the...

On the inability of the moving interface model to predict isothermal solidification time during transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of ni-based superalloys

    Abstract
Understanding diffusion-induced isothermal solidification time during transient liquid phase bonding is vital in producing intermetallic-free robust joints. The isothermal solidification completion time is overestimated by the existing analytical models, even by the closest one to the real bonding conditions, known as the moving interface model. It was found that the boride formation in the diffusion affected zone of Ni-based superalloy upon using B-containing filler metals is one of the reasons behind the inability of the moving interface model to predict the isothermal solidification completion time accurately, which has received scant attention in the literature. Moreover, simplified...

Factors affecting strength of dissimilar TiAl/Ni–Si–B/Ni-based superalloy brazed joint

    Abstract
This paper addresses the process-microstructure-strength correlation during dissimilar brazing of TiAl alloy to IN738 Ni-based superalloy using Ni–4Si–3.2B filler metal. The solid/liquid reactions, solidification phenomena, and solid-state phenomena are analyzed. The thickness of the athermal solidification zone and reaction layer at different bonding conditions (holding times and temperatures) determined and analyzed using a Larson–Miller parameter (LMP). It was resulted that the shear strength of the joint can be formulated regarding bonding temperature and holding time through using LMP. It was found that the sizes of athermally solidified zone and reaction layer are two key factors...

    Microstructure-properties relationship of TLP-bonded GTD-111 nickel-base superalloy

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 490, Issue 1-2 , 25 August , 2008 , Pages 229-234 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Pouranvari, M ; Ekrami, A ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of transient liquid phase-bonded joints of GTD-111 nickel-base superalloy using a Ni-Si-B interlayer was investigated. Shear strength and hardness profile of the joints were discussed with respect to the bond microstructure. In the bonding condition, in which isothermal solidification has not been accomplished completely, eutectic constituent which has the highest hardness in the bond region is the preferential failure source. Additionally, it was found that when isothermal solidification is completed, the extent of γ′ formation in the bond region is the controlling factor for joint strength. Shear strength of bonds after...

Effects of interface conditions on thermo-mechanical fields of multi-phase nano-fibers/particles

    Abstract
The stress field of a multi-phase spherical/cylindrical inhomogeneity with arbitrary interface bonding conditions, subjected to both a uniform temperature change and a uniform hydrostatic tension, is presented. Imperfect bonding conditions are modeled using linear spring model and coherent interface model. In nanosize inhomogeneities, since the surface energy is not negligible with respect to the bulk energy, the effect of surface stresses is incorporated into the formulation. Accurate estimates for the thermal stresses of a functionally graded coated inhomogeneity with perfect and /~or imperfect interfaces are given. The influence of coating stiffness, coating thickness and interface...
