Numerical and experimental study on freely bubbling gas-solid fluidized bed using Discrete Bubble Model (DBM)

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Movahedirad, Salman (Author) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study a novel phenomenological discrete bubble model (DBM) has been developed for freely bubbling gas-solid fluidized bed simulation. In this model the path of each bubble was tracked through the bed. The model can predict the bubble and emulsion phase dynamic behavior very well. At the first stage the model was developed for a pseudo 2-D gas-solid fluidized bed, and then it was adapted for 3-D beds. The emulsion phase assumed to be as an incompressible fluid and the potential flow assumption has been used to find the velocity flow-field around a single isolated bubble. For a swarm of bubbles the superposition rule has been used to find the velocity vector field. In...

Numerical investigation of gas bubble behavior in tapered fluidized beds

    , Article Particuology ; 2017 ; 16742001 (ISSN) Khodabandehlou, R ; Askaripour, H ; Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, the behavior of gas bubbles in tapered fluidized beds is investigated with the use of a two-fluid model incorporating kinetic theory of granular flow. The effects of various parameters such as apex angle, particle size, and particle density on the size distribution and the rise velocity of gas bubbles were examined. In addition, the simulation results for the bubble fraction and axial velocity of gas bubbles were compared with experimental data reported in the literature and good agreement was observed. As the apex angle was increased, the fraction of gas bubbles with large sizes increased and the fraction of bubbles with small sizes decreased. As the particle size...

    Abstract
A significant challenge of foam injection is the stability of the foam in formations. In this study, the modeling of liquid drainage and the impact of some parameters (i.e., concentration of surfactants, nano-particles, and monovalent ions) on the liquid drainage rate and foam stability were investigated by using a population balance model. First, foam bubble size distribution was experimentally measured and used as input for the population balance model. The population balance equations were solved numerically, and the number density of bubble size distribution as a function of time was obtained. Then, the liquid drainage rate was calculated using volume balance equations. It is shown that...

    Abstract
In this article, the digital image analysis (DIA) technique has been used to study the bubble size and bubble size distribution evolution in a pseudo-two-dimensional gas-solid fluidized bed. In addition, a numerical discrete bubble model (DBM) based on the bubble-bubble interactions was developed and the model predictions were compared with the experimental data. The developed model can predict the bubble size and bubble size distribution through the bed height and the lateral distribution of bubbles. Comparison between model predictions and the result of DIA measurements shows that bubble breakage has a significant effect on the bubble size distribution especially at heights far from the...

    Abstract
CFD simulation of cylindrical bubble column including air as dispersed phase and water as continuous phase operating in churn-turbulent flow regime with diameter of 0.49 m, height of 3.6 m and gas superficial velocity of 0.14 m/s have been conducted. All simulations have been carried out in a 2D axisymmetric, unsteady and Euler/Euler framework with the aid of commercial software FLUENT v. 14.5. Simulations were validated by our experimental results through residence time distribution (RTD) data. Effect of bubble size distribution at inlet on column hydrodynamic was investigated and results clearly showed that equilibrium bubble size distribution in most parts of column is independent of...

Monitoring the role of polymer and surfactant concentrations on bubble size distribution in colloidal gas aphron based fluids

    Abstract
Colloidal gas aphron (CGA) based fluids have recently been introduced to develop depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs due to their ability in controlling fluid losses. Bubbles size of CGAs plays an important role in pore blockage ability as the controlling mechanism in fluid invasion reduction. However, fundamental understanding of how bubble size distribution is controlled by polymer and surfactant concentrations is not well discussed in the available literature. Almost all reported experiences on CGAs sizing were conducted on single bubble behavior, and little attention has been given to the variation of bubble size distribution (BSD) of CGAs at different levels of polymer/surfactant...

    Abstract
Recently, colloidal gas aphron (CGA) fluids technology has been employed to drill depleted oil and gas reservoirs. Almost all reported experience on CGA fluids were conducted at ambient conditions, and little attention has been paid on the behavior of CGAs at high pressures which is more close to real conditions. In this study, high pressure experiments were conducted by using High Pressure Microscope cell to visualize/monitor the behavior of CGAs at elevated pressures. Single bubble behavior and bubble size distribution (BSD) of CGAs were investigated under different scenarios of pressure change. Results of experiments revealed that BSD of CGAs is controlled by the path of pressure changes,...

CFD Simulation of Gas Bubble Size Distribution and Rising Velocity in Tapered Fluidized Beds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology A’rabi, Yavar (Author) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The solid-gas fluidized beds are widely used in the petrochemical, energy, chemical, and metallurgical industries. Because they provide fast heat- and mass-transfer rate along with good mixing behavior of solids. Because of carry over of fine particles in columnar beds, the application of tapered fluidized beds has become widespread in industires due to the variation in axial velocity along the bed height. In this work, a 2D two-fluid model (TFM) incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) was used to simulate the hydrodynamic behavior of gas bubbles in a tapered fluidized bed. The experimental data obtained in the laboratory were compared with the simulation results and good...

    Abstract
Recently, Colloidal Gas Aphron (CGA) based fluids have been introduced to further develop depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. This fluid system has been employed in an attempt to control drilling fluid invasion and, thus, reducing formation damage occurred during drilling operations. Understanding the mechanisms of fluid invasion control is of great importance for successful design and application of CGA-based fluids in drilling operations. Although fluid flow of conventional foams has been studied extensively in the available literature, little attention has been paid to CGA fluids flow, especially in heterogeneous fractured porous media. Here, an experimental study was conducted to achieve...

Application of the splitting approach to solve population balance equations in chemical processes

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 32, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 1894-1900 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Bastani, D ; Baghaei, A ; Sarrafi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Different processes in chemical industries deal with particles and multiphase flow. In such processes, particle or bubble size distribution (PSD) influences the final product quality and also process design. On the other hand, solutions to the dominant hydrodynamic and thermo-kinetic equations ignoring these distributions will make it impossible to accurately simulate these processes. Solutions to population balance equations (PBE's) are needed to attain the PSD. One of the most common methods for the solution of a PBE is the classes method (CM). However, as this method requires a large number of classes to give a reasonable result, it needs a huge amount of calculations and time. To...
