Application of a new rapid transit network design model to bus rapid transit network design: Case study Isfahan metropolitan area

    , Article Transport ; Volume 30, Issue 1 , Oct , 2013 , pages 93-102 ; 16484142 (ISSN) Kermanshahi, S ; Shafahi, Y ; Bagherian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The problem of Rapid Transit Network Design (RTND) is studied in this paper. Due to the noticeable contribution of rapid transit lines in public transportation network of large urban areas, this problem is interesting to the transportation specialists. On the other hand, the success stories of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in different countries have motivated us to study BRT network planning. BRT systems can be developed with less investment costs and construction time in comparison with rail-based systems. Therefore, planning Bus Rapid Transit lines, either to develop a new rapid transit network or extend a current one can be an interesting research topic. This problem, like other...

Solving the Bus Rapid Transit Network Design Problem with Ant System Algorithm (in Realistic Urban Network)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kishani, Najme (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Network design problem (NDP) is an important problem in transportation planning, in which transit network design is one the most important problems. Public transportation means, however, can not meet urban mobility needs in the developing countries satisfactorily. Bus services are usually unsuitable, insufficient, and unreliable. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, is an emerging public transport alternative designed to provide appropriate, low cost, and effective services, and improve mobility in both developed and developing countries. To design public transportation systems, existing constraints such as resources and budget have to be considered to serve estimated demand properly. Bus Rapid...

A hybrid machine learning and optimization model to minimize the total cost of BRT brake components

    , Article Journal of Advanced Transportation ; Volume 2021 , 2021 ; 01976729 (ISSN) Najafi Zangeneh, S ; Shams Gharneh, N ; Arjomandi Nezhad, A ; Hassannayebi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Public transport is amongst critical infrastructures in modern cities, especially megacities, home to millions of people. The reliability of these systems is highly crucial for both citizens and service providers. If service providers overlook system reliability, a considerable amount of expenses will be wasted. Several factors such as vehicle failure, accident, lack of budget weather factors, and traffic congestion cause unreliability, among which vehicle failure plays a prominent role. The brake system is the most vulnerable and vital component of a public transportation bus. Brake reliability depends on driver's expertise, component quality, passenger loading, line situation, etc....

Multi-Criteria Appraisal of Regular Bus, Bus Rapid Transit and Metro in Tehran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keyvan Ekbatani, Mehdi (Author) ; Vaziri, Manuchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Viewpoints of various interest groups should be addressed in any public service appraisal. Urban public transportation development and services have diverse impacts on users, operators and the community. The impacts can be characterized by a wide range of perspectives including: efficiency, effectiveness, efficacy, economic, social and environmental dimensions. Deployment of quantitative techniques, such as multicriteria decision making methods, would facilitate such a multidimensional analysis and appraisal. The objective of the study summarized herein was to shed some light on the perceived attributes pertinent to the Tehran regular transit service appraisal. The major services include...

Rapid Transit Network Design For Maximizing Acceptable Transit Coverage

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kermanshahi, Shahab (Author) ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Designing a rapid transit network which is capable of providing a convenient coverage for passengers is studied in thisdoctoral thesis. First, a mathematical model of rapid transit network design which is a mixed integer program is presented (C_RTND). Objective function of the model is maximization of acceptable transit coverage and the model is capable of considering different rapid transit technologies. Furthermore, for each technology capacity constraint is considered in the model. Second, a heuristic algorithm is developed and used to solve the proposed model. The algorithm consists of 3 main parts: candidate line generation, network evaluation and a search algorithm for selecting a good...

Reliability Analysis of Tehran Bus Rapid Transit Line 1 and Presentation of Preventive Maintenance for Reduction of Failures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najafi Zangeneh, Saeed (Author) ; Eshraghnia Jahromi, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reliability and availability are one of the sensitive and significant points in each maintenance system. Due to the nature of bus system failures, that almost consist of large percentage of possibility risk factors is the systems maintenance, in this study for implementing our proposed model, the bus rapid transit garage-line1 were selected. This model is to provide solutions in strategic and operational levels in the network's garage in several sessions. The solutions include decisions about the capacity of human resources in the workshop system, determine the communication policies with suppliers of spare parts and human resources training policies by the standard scoring system, the...
