Abstract
This paper is concerned about islanding of network and observability of these islands in power system restoration. It is assumed that a black out happened on a system which have minimum PMUs (phasor measurement units) for measuring network's parameters. To restore this system an algorithm of islanding that keeps all islands observable to make the restoration process shorter is introduced and developed step by step on the IEEE 14 bus system and it is applied to the New England 39 bus system to show the result for a bigger system
A heuristic fuzzy decision-based solving of redispatching problem for congestion management in restructured power systems
, Article Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems ; Volume 24, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 563-574 ; 10641246 (ISSN) ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper proposes a new technique to manage congestion in a short-run market model. The method consists of an iterative algorithm to search and apply a sequence of bilateral power exchanges among the generators that would optimally reduce and completely remove the congestions. A combination of fuzzy decision principle and sensitivity analysis is developed to choose the best exchange and AC load flow is used to apply it on the network in the iterations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated in a case study on IEEE 118-bus system, and results are discussed in the paper in comparison with the mathematical and evolutionary-based optimization techniques

Abstract
Online power system stability assessment during restoration has not been strongly addressed yet. The introduction of wide area measurement systems (WAMS), however, made it possible to monitor the stability online. This study technically presents a detailed analysis of stability during restoration using WAMS. The power system build-up strategy is used as the restoration approach, based on which the early and the last stages of restoration are to divide the power system into islands and interconnect them, respectively. In fact, the practical use of WAMS at the early stages of restoration provides precise determination of generators loading steps. Moreover, unification of phase angle references...

Abstract
Different reasons such as power system restructuring, electricity price variation in some hours of a day and growth in the fuel price, have led to more attention to demand response (DR) programmes for consumers. Two important issues in DR programmes are emergency demand response programming (EDRP) and Interruptible/Curtail able (I/C) programme that is utilised as interruptible load contracts (ILC). The EDDR is utilised to decrease the consumption in peak load or critical hours of the day. This occurs by means of customer's behaviour in response to the incentives. However, the curtailment of voluntarily loads in the critical hours considering the consumer requirements is an action that can be...
Probabilistic multistage PMU placement in electric power systems
, Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 26, issue. 2 , 2011 , p. 841-849 ; ISSN: 08858977 ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Khodaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
This paper presents an optimization model for the calculation of the minimum number of phasor measurement units (PMUs) in electrical power networks. The problem constraint is a predefined probability of observability associated with each bus. The mixed-integer programming is used for the proposed optimization and an efficient linearization technique is proposed to convert the nonlinear function representing the probability of observability into a set of linear expressions. The PMU placement is staged in a multi-year planning horizon due to financial and physical constraints. The average probability of observability is maximized at the intermediate planning stages, subject to a limited number...

Abstract
Providing more choices to customers for determining the cost of their required reliability levels is one of the most important targets of restructured power system. Centralized management of reliability in Vertically Integrated Utility (VIU) applying the same policies to different customers is replaced with decentralized management allowing customers to participate in reliability management based on their required reliability levels. Hence, the importance of implementing interruptible load contracts that specifies each customer's reliability level has been increased in power system studies. In this paper, stochastic programming based on Monte Carlo approach has been used to implement...
A sectionalizing method in power system restoration based on wide area measurement systems
, Article EPEC 2010 - IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference: "Sustainable Energy for an Intelligent Grid", 25 August 2010 through 27 August 2010 ; August , 2010 ; 9781424481880 (ISBN) ; Salehi Dobakhshari, A ; Azizi, S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Nouri Zadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
This paper presents a novel sectionalizing method for the build-up strategy in power system restoration. Power system restoration is the procedure of restoring power system elements after a partial or a complete blackout. Because of its economic and political importance, different strategies have been developed for power system restoration. One of the most practical and economical is the build-up strategy that includes the process of restoring separated parts (islands) in the power system and interconnecting them afterwards. This paper intends to develop a systematic algorithm for sectionalizing a power system considering various constraints such as black-start capability of generators,...
Utilization of analytical hierarchy process in contingency ranking

Abstract
Contingency screening and ranking is one of the most important issues for security assessment in the field of power system operation. The objective of contingency screening and ranking is to quickly and accurately select a short list of critical contingencies from a large list of potential contingencies and rank them according to their severity. Then suitable preventive control actions can be implemented considering contingencies that are likely to affect the power system performance. In this paper a novel approach is presented for contingency ranking based on static security assessment (SSA). This method uses weighted performance index with the application of Analytical Hierarchy Process...

Abstract
Load flow problems have always been an important issue in power system analysis and require proper modeling of system components. In this regard Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers are modern devices that their modeling specially the series type is a challenging topic. This paper describes a three-phase model for Distributed Static Series Compensator (DSSC) based on extending the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) model in Newton power flow. To extend the SSSC model the following two differences must be considered; three completely independent phases and the existence of several modules in a DSSC system. Simulation results on the IEEE 30-bus system and a five bus...

Abstract
Under voltage load shedding (UVLS) is one of the most powerful countermeasure and somehow an economical solution to sustain voltage stability especially for double or severe contingencies in power systems. In this paper the concept of dynamic security-constrained OPF is employed to develop a model for optimal UVLS. Considering dynamic voltage security, the presented model attempts to provide sufficient voltage stability margin for post contingency condition. This is done by means of interruption some portion of loads at minimum cost. The voltage stability margin, which is measured as a MW distance to the collapse point, is incorporated into the power flow equations. Although some powerful...
