, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farooghi, Mohammad (Author) ; Nemati, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is the construction of hard and tough Zirconia bodies from economical raw materials using minimum sintering time and temperature.
Stabilizers cause tetragonal particles to be remained in cubic phase. Most additives are Ca, Ce, Mg and Y ions the whole of which are rare earth elements and make solid solutions with Zirconia.
In this project different percents of CaO, MgO, CeO2, and Y2O3 were mixed with ZrO2 and they were sintered after granulation, cold pressing and Cold Isostatic Pressing. Using jar milling and fast milling, the particle size of purchased ZrO2 was reduced to 0.7 um. The whole needed additives were purchased with particle size below 300 nm....

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Zobeydi, Rahman (Author) ; Rahman Setayesh, Shahrbanoo (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Thermodynamic quantities such as proton affinity (PA) and molecular basicity (GB) for (CaO)n nanoclusters with n=2–16 have been calculated using three computational models of the DFT (B3LYP, M06, PW91, CAM–B3LYP and ωB97XD functionals), MP2, and HF with the cc-PVNZ (n = D and T) basis set in the gas phase. Absolute deviation error (AAD%) indicates that obtained PA and GB values using DFT model and the B3LYP method with mean percentage errors of 0.77 and 0.90 %, respectively, have the higher accuracy than the other methods and models. Owing to the unique physical and chemical properties of ILs, can be used as catalysts, promoters and modifiers of catalyst in many organic reactions. Therefore,...

Micro-scale evolution of mechanical properties of glass-ceramic sealant for solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cells

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 47, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 3884-3891 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Fakouri Hasanabadi, M ; Malzbender, J ; Groß Barsnick, S. M ; Abdoli, H ; Kokabi, A. H ; Faghihi Sani, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
The structural integrity of the sealant is critical for the reliability of solid oxide cells (SOCs) stacks. In this study, elastic modulus (E), hardness (H) and fracture toughness (KIC) of a rapid crystallizing glass of BaO–CaO–SiO2 system termed “sealant G” are reported as determined using an indentation test method at room temperature. A wide range of indentation loads (1 mN–10 N) was used to investigate the load-dependency of these mechanical properties. Values of 95 ± 12 GPa, 5.8 ± 0.2 GPa and 1.15 ± 0.07 MPa m0.5 were derived for E, H and KIC using the most suitable indentation loads. An application relevant annealing treatment of 500 h at 800 °C does not lead to a significant change of...

    Abstract
In this study, 40% CaO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was used for biodiesel production from corn oil. A transesterification reaction was done for 5h at a temperature of 65°C in the presence of corn oil, methanol (methanol to oil molar ratio of 12:1), and CaO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst (0.06g/g (6wt%)). Catalyst used in this study was synthesized using the sol-gel method. In this method, two parameters of gelation temperature and nitric acid concentration were used as variables in the catalyst synthesis step, and experiments were designed using central composite design (CCD). The results indicate that the optimal point is achieved at a gelation temperature of 70°C and...

    Abstract
Characterization and calcination behavior of a low-grade manganese ore, as a part of Mn ferroalloys production, was studied by XRF, ex-situ XRD, in-situ XRD, and SEM-EDS techniques. Calcination experiments were carried out at and up to 900 °C (1173 K) in air and argon atmospheres. The samples were in particles and powder forms. The results indicated that both quartz and calcite phases in the ore exhibit a bimodal spatial distribution; as relatively large regions and finely distributed in the Mn- and Fe-containing phases. By Rietveld analysis of the in-situ XRD data, the reactions occurring upon heating during the calcination process were deduced. Thermal decomposition and reactive diffusion...

    Abstract
In the present study, the effects of Sr and Mg were investigated on mechanical and biological properties of 58S bioactive glass (BG). SiO2-P2O5-CaO BG with different contents of Sr and Mg were synthesized via the sol-gel method and immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for several days to explore their biocompatibility. Precise analyses of the BG using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy showed that the Mg-doped BG containing 8 wt % MgO possessed better biocompatibility. It was also found that mechanical properties of the BG could be improved by increasing the amounts of MgO and SrO. Both 5Sr-BG and 8Mg-BG samples did not exhibit any...

Biodiesel production via transesterification of canola oil in the presence of Na–K doped CaO derived from calcined eggshell

    Abstract
CaO derived from calcined eggshell was doped with Na–K by wet impregnation method and the effect of different Na/K molar ratios was investigated on biodiesel production from canola oil. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses. FAME yields were determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The Na–K/CaO catalyst with Na/K molar ratio of 1 showed the highest FAME yield of 97.6% at optimum reaction conditions. Structural investigation of materials revealed that FAME yield was proportional to the number of basic sites on...

Diffuse emissions of particles from iron ore piles by wind erosion

    , Article Environmental Engineering Science ; Volume 28, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 333-339 ; 10928758 (ISSN) Afshar Mohajer, N ; Torkian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Industrial air pollution from point and nonpoint sources of steel complexes has drawn increasingly more public attention in the past decades. Previous research efforts have been more concentrated on point sources of particulate emissions from these complexes. However, wind-induced particulate emissions from iron ore storage piles not only result in ambient air pollution but also increase economic adverse effects to the industry by loss of process raw materials. Experiments were conducted to assess the impact of wind speed and humidity on particulate emission rates from iron ore storage piles. A wind-generating system and specific iron ore, experimental piles (L:W:H of 30:11.5:5 cm) were...

    Abstract
Carbonaceous materials (CMs) have been applied extensively for enhancing the catalytic performance of environmental catalysts, however, the self-catalytic mechanism of CMs for groundwater remediation is rarely investigated. Herein, we unveiled the catalytic ability of various CMs via Fe(III) reduction through polyvinyl alcohol-coated calcium peroxide nanoparticles (PVA@nCP) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal. Among selected CMs (graphite (G), biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC)), BC and AC showed enhancement of TCE removal of 89% and 98% via both adsorption and catalytic degradation. BET and SEM analyses showed a higher adsorption capacity of AC (27.8%) than others. The generation of...
